Writer Frank Darabont pays homage to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) by including the lines "I have a bad feeling about this" and "What an incredible new smell you've discovered".
"Austria, March 1917" was released on video as the first half of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Adventures in the Secret Service (1999) (chapter 13 of 22), the second half being Petrograd, July 1917 (1992)
Guest star Christopher Lee worked with Indiana Jones film director Steven Spielberg in 1941 (1979). His character wields a device that looks like a three-piece nunchuku, which the audience is led to believe is a torture device, before assembling it as a coat-hanger. This gag was re-used by Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
Frank Darabont's teleplay was adapted by Dan Barry into issues 9 (partially) and 10 of Dark Horse's 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' 12 issue limited series, published October 01, 1992 and December 01, 1992.
