Choice Troops
bkoganbing15 November 2016
Dick Powell stars himself in this Zane Grey Theater production which he also produced through his Four Star company. He plays a hardnosed Union army colonel in charge of a detail to take a treaty to the Commances during the Civil War.

The only problem is that this crew is a bunch of rebels themselves, as nasty a bunch of cavalry troopers since Gregory Peck handpicked a some for a mission in Only The Valiant. But Peck picked his in that film for a reason, Powell had no choice when he was handed these dregs, especially Jack Elam.

His only ally among them is junior officer Don Dubbins. But when they get surrounded with both Confederates and Commanches, the whole crew of them have to make some decisions.

The ensemble cast is a finely tuned machine. You'll have to watch the story to see who and how many make it out of this jackpot.

A strict Colonel is surrounded by undisciplined soldiers.

Colonel Blackburn is a hard-nose military man that is in charge of a ragged renegade group of men that is out seeking money rather than fighting. As Blackburn calls his group 'Dollar Soldiers' since they are more interested in signing to the military for the bonus instead of fighting. The group of men are about tired of the rough Colonel and plan on taking him out at the earliest opportunity.

It is not long before the group gets their chance. They are on a dangerous mission through confederate lines. With the entire squad surrounded the group decides that the Colonel needs to stand trial where the death sentence will be pronounced. Before they are sent to a prison camp they want justice on the Colonel. But there is more to this story.

This was a nice story that was well performed by the entire group. Nothing really stood out as remarkable but the group did work well with each other to make for an enjoyable watch. The usual stiff Dick Powell was actually very convincing as the strict Colonel which made the entire program entertaining. Nice watch.
