MIKE HAMMER – Music to Die By – 1958

This is episode is number 19 of the 1958 to 1959 Private Eye series, MIKE HAMMER. The series starred Darren McGavin as the hard-boiled detective who takes no guff. The series was based on the top selling novels by Mikey Spillane. Every episode had the mandatory round of fly fists, chairs etc with some gun-play normally involved.

In this one, McGavin is hired to help out a buddy, Wally Vernon. Vernon is a disc jockey who is getting leaned on by big time producer, Joan Banks. Banks is not above using violence to get air time for her acts. Vernon does not want to play ball, and would like McGavin to look into the matter.

Banks is not happy with Vernon's plan. She sends over several gents with a definite anti-social attitude to have words with Vernon. Vernon now "decides" he really does not need McGavin's help after all, and fires him. Vernon however collapses shortly afterwards. It seems the beating Bank's men had given Vernon was more severe than needed.

McGavin of course is less than amused with this and goes after Banks, hired or not. The ever handy with a fist and a boot, McGavin, soon works over Bank's crew and gets the goods on the witch, Banks. It will be a vacation on the State's dime for them all.

This one is neat, fast, violent and to the point. What more can a guy ask for.
