Fans seeking shows like Pretty Little Liars can explore teen dramas with dark mysteries, like Riverdale & Vampire Diaries. While there's nothing quite like Pll, other options such as Big Little Lies and Gossip Girl offer similar drama and intrigue. Viewers craving the thrill of secrets and scandal can find solace in shows like You, Dexter, and How to Get Away with Murder.
Years after it ended its run, fans may still be looking for shows like Pretty Little Liars to fill the void. The dark teen drama is based on the novel of the same name by Sara Shepard and follows a group of young girls who find themselves targeted by an anonymous blackmailer known only as "A". As the teens attempt to live their normal young lives, this unknown enemy threatens to expose their darkest secrets. It sets the stage for a compelling mystery with plenty of twists while...

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989. Main characters like June Osborne in The Handmaid's Tale and Walter White in Breaking Bad showcase the concept of plot armor, surviving in dire situations due to their narrative importance. Characters such as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders and Dexter Morgan in Dexter consistently evade death despite being in dangerous circumstances, solidifying the idea of plot armor. The Doctor in Doctor Who and Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead showcase extreme examples of plot armor, surviving countless deadly encounters and finding ways to keep going despite the odds.
Plot armor referred to when a character was so important to the story of a show that they were impossible to kill off without that marking the end of the entire series. This realization meant that even when the main characters found themselves facing certain death, all logic pointed to them making it out alive. This can often lower the stakes for viewers,...

Grey's Anatomy has become one of the best and longest-running procedural TV shows. Keeping a devoted audience for four seasons is difficult enough, but Grey's Anatomy has maintained its audience for 19 seasons. This is thanks to its plethora of interesting medical cases and its large cast of entertaining characters.
With so many original cast members being killed off or leaving the show since its beginning, Grey's Anatomy must constantly create new characters up to par with the originals. Shonda Rhimes manages this by creating fully fleshed-out backgrounds and story arcs; every character is introduced with an entire universe already inside them, and they blend seamlessly with the characters they're surrounded by. From the sweet Lexie Grey to the lovable George O'Malley, there is no shortage of great Grey's Anatomy characters.
Related 10 Best Medical Shows, Ranked By IMDb Medical shows are common for any network, but Grey's Anatomy and House are some of the most groundbreaking.

Quick Links Who Was Rita Morgan and How Did She Impact Dexter? Who Killed Rita In Dexter Season 4? The Trinity Killer Punished Dexter With Rita's Death Why Did Dexter's Showrunners Kill Off Rita's Character? Rita Morgan's murder in the Dexter Season 4 finale upset many fans due to reinforcing harmful TV tropes. While many fans consider the Trinity arc to be one of Dexter's best, Rita's murder was a disappointment for viewers. Rita's character was used as a tool for Dexter's growth, robbing her of agency, perpetuating victimhood and making her seem like more of an afterthought than a person.
Dexter's original series finale was famously controversial. However, several seasons before the serial killer drama's conclusion, another contentious ending rocked its audience. The events of the Dexter Season 4 finale aggravated more than a few viewers -- for understandable reasons. Dexter's kind-hearted wife Rita Morgan (née Bennett) was murdered by the most...

Netflix has a lot of content on its virtual shelves, but it’s missing something so huge that it’s almost shocking.
They have no original medical drama for their subscribers.
Pulse will change all that.
Netflix announced today that Carlton Cuse and Zoe Robyn will team up for the new show, which already has its first star attached.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3: Everything We Know
Justina Machado is the first person to join the cast as a series regular.
This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into the procedural space, although their procedurals tend to have season-long arcs.
The Lincoln Lawyer, The Diplomat, and The Night Agent all have touches of procedural dramas in them, even if they don’t focus on episodes of the week.
Whether Pulse falls more in line with what we know as procedural content or not remains to be seen.

Scott Speedman has won over Grey's Anatomy fans with his performance as Dr. Nick Marsh.
But he might soon be facing much gorier medical emergencies in a new and very different role.
Variety reported today that Speedman has been cast in a lead role on the upcoming Peacock horror series Teacup.
The show is based on a beloved novel by Robert McCammon that's not for the faint of heart.
While the book takes place in Texas, the series follows “a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive.”
Speedman will be playing the role of James Chenoweth, alongside Yvonne Strahovski, who will star as his wife, Maggie Chenoweth.
Teacup comes courtesy of Atomic Monsters, the production company founded by James Wan, the director responsible for the Saw and Conjuring franchises.
So yeah, squeamish Grey's fans might want to skip this one.

Just over a year ago, the Peacock streaming service announced they were teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here) – and even at the time, it was clear that they wouldn’t be keeping the Stinger title, because the show was being referred to as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch was on board to write and executive produce the show. The project is now going by the title Teacup, and not only has Peacock given it a straight-to-series order (allowing it to bypass the usual pilot process), but Deadline reports that Yvonne Strahovski, whose credits include Chuck, The Predator, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stateless, Dexter, The Tomorrow War, and He’s Out There, has signed on to play the series regular role of Maggie Chenoweth. Strahovski will also be a producer on the show.

Yale most recently wrote for the Apple TV+ series “See” starring Jason Momoa. Madame Web filmmaker Sj Clarkson is both persistent and prolific. The British director has helmed at least 109 episodes of television from 2001 until now. She cut her teeth to the tune of 37 episodes on a British medical soap known as Doctors, but that experience eventually paved the way for the likes of Dexter, Orange Is the New Black and Succession. (Her first episode of Dexter ended with John Lithgow’s iconic line of, “Hello, Dexter Morgan.”)
In recent years, Clarkson’s efforts to mount projects on a massive scale have tested her patience, as her Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel pilot, Bloodmoon, didn’t go, nor did her version of Star Trek 4 in 2018. Nevertheless, Clarkson’s feature directorial debut, Madame Web, is now arriving in theaters on Feb. 14, and she never imagined that her first film would take place in a universe that’s related to Spider-Man.

The shows competing for the 2024 Best TV Stunt Ensemble SAG Award are “Ahsoka,” “Barry,” “Beef,” “The Last of Us,” and “The Mandalorian.” Based on our racetrack odds, “The Last of Us” performers (16/5) are the clear frontrunners, followed in order by those from “Ahsoka” (4/1), “The Mandalorian” (4/1), “Barry” (9/2), and “Beef” (9/2).
The team from “The Mandalorian” are this year’s only returning nominees, having triumphed on their sole previous bid in 2021. This makes the current lineup the fourth in the category’s 17-year history to include a single group of veterans, following cases involving “Dexter” (2011), “Westworld” (2021), and “Cobra Kai” (2022).
“Ahsoka” follows “The Mandalorian” and “Andor” as the third “Star Wars” series to contend for this honor, while it and the former are the first two shows in that franchise to directly face off here. The “Andor” performers were recognized for their first season last year but were ultimately bested by the “Stranger Things” crew.

Running for eight seasons between the years 2006 and 2013, Dexter was a show of remarkable highs and sometimes soul-crushing lows. It started well, with an undeniable central hook, and it fit in effectively with the sorts of anti-hero-led/morally gray drama series that were popular in the 2000s (and are arguably still popular to this day). Like Tony Soprano before him and Walter White (just) after him, the lead character of Dexter was a complicated and not entirely great guy who was nevertheless interesting to watch, despite - or perhaps because of - the terrible things he did.

Dexter: Debra's fate felt off, as her death didn't align with her character arc. Dallas: Bobby's return in the dream season cheapened the show's realism and high stakes. The Walking Dead: Glenn's survival after the dumpster scene stretched believability.
Some TV plot twists went so far out of left field it appeared as if the creators just made them up on the spot, but they were planned out and aired as intended. Unexpected plot twists can be an exciting and engaging part of the television viewing experience, but when they don’t feel like they align with previously established events, they can leave audiences scratching their heads and wondering if they were even planned that way at all. While some of these twists ended up working out for the better, they still came across as oddly chaotic and disorderly.

Madame Web's director, S.J. Clarkson, compares Dakota Johnson's character to Jessica Jones. Clarkson is experienced in the superhero genre, having worked on both Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Madame Web will explore the protagonist's powers and her struggle with understanding her past and present.
Madame Web’s S.J. Clarkson is weaving a web that superhero fans will be familiar with, at least where the director’s main Spider-Verse character is concerned. In the most recent issue of Total Film magazine, Clarkson reveals that the “loner” Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) is very similar to Netflix’s Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). Clarkson said (via GamesRadar+):
[Both are] a little bit abrasive, a bit quirky, and on the outer edges of things. With JJ, she had Ptsd. That [sense of] reality to it was its success in a way. I suppose it's the same with Madame Web.

Every medium makes significant leaps forward over time, but there’s an extra level of innovation that accompanies television. There was a time when television was considered inferior to the cinematic experience, but storytelling on TV has entered a golden age that’s responsible for some of the best narratives and characters of recent decades.
Sadly, television can struggle with figuring out how to extend stories for multiple seasons, potentially longer than their creators originally intended. There's no shortage of television series that continue long after they’ve lost their purpose. The viewers who remain tend to stick around because of the time they’ve already invested in the programs.
Updated on 26th January, 2024 by Fawzia Khan: In the current television landscape, shows barely last a season or two before getting canceled. However, seeing how so many television shows, like Dexter or House, dragged beyond their prime and muddied the...

Mindhunter may have ended, but there are other shows like Killing Eve, Clickbait, Elementary, and Only Murders in the Building to fulfill your crime and psychological thriller cravings. Shows like Broadchurch, Hannibal, Making a Murderer, and True Detective offer intriguing mysteries and delve into the minds of killers, much like Mindhunter. Criminal Minds, Manhunt, The Act, Unbelievable, Dexter, and American Crime Story provide unique perspectives on crime investigation and storytelling, making them worth a watch.
Though the series concluded after two seasons, there are shows like Mindhunter that fans can turn to now that the series has ended. Based on real events, Mindhunter follows fictional characters who represent real people from the 1970s in the FBI who worked to begin the criminal profiling of serial killers. That fascination extended to an interest in psychology, cold cases, and true-crime podcasts today. There is nothing quite like its format, but there are...

Dexter and Parks and Rec have surprising similarities, such as being workplace shows in the public sector with a zany sense of humor and a colorful ensemble cast. Actor Jay Jackson's appearances as a newscaster in both shows sparked the theory that they take place in the same universe. However, since the two shows don't share the same network or creative team, it's likely just a coincidence that Jackson played a reporter in both and not evidence of a shared TV universe.
A shared casting between Dexter and Parks and Recreation seems to suggest that these two very different TV shows might be set in the same universe. Dexter revolves around a forensic analyst in Miami who moonlights as a serial killer killing other serial killers. Parks and Recreation revolves around the wacky antics of the local government in a small town in Indiana. Despite having very different tones and styles,...

The In Memoriam segment of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday paid a moving tribute to several television stars, creators and producers who have died over the last year — but social media was quick to point out the omissions.
Users on X, formerly Twitter, were upset that missing from the video montage of the In Memoriam segment were Ryan O’Neal and Ray Stevenson. O’Neal, who died Dec. 8 at age 82, had television credits stretching back to the 1960s, and he had notable roles on the soap Peyton Place and the sitcom Good Sports and also had a run on Bones.
Stevenson, who died May 23 at age 58, was most recently seen in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka, and worked consistently in television since the 1990s. His notable television credits include Vikings, Dexter and Rome.

Shows like Criminal Minds took the police procedural genre to new heights with their focus on profiling criminals and delving into their minds. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is a spin-off worth watching for fans of the original, as it takes the show to new international locations. Dexter offers a unique twist on the serial killer narrative by featuring a protagonist who works for the police and targets criminals.
Shows like Criminal Minds flooded broadcast television for the last two decades. Even before it premiered, police procedurals had been one of the most popular genres since the advent of television. While there were several hit cop shows on TV, from Columbo and Kojak to Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues, it seems the shows that started in the 1990s and continue to this very day took things a step further than any that came before. The Streamable has compiled a list of the top 25 pilots in TV history, and where you can watch them now.
The breadth of TV content available these days is truly staggering. Whether on live channels or on-demand, on linear TV or via subscription streaming services, there has never been a wider availability of TV shows, and that can create some real uncertainty about where to start!
When picking a new TV series, it’s obviously best to start with the pilot. That’s a TV industry term for the first episode of a series, and every show that’s ever been made (along with thousands that ultimately weren’t sent to production) has had one.
Choosing the best titles amongst these is difficult, particularly since “best” is a subjective term dependent on the individual user to interpret. However, the following list has been pulled from an Ask Reddit thread which...

Supporting and ancillary figures in television are usually the ones who meet their doom early on in a series’ run, while the deaths of major characters are reserved for later on as a way to create drama. That being said, many television series love to defy expectations and surprise their audiences.
One of the biggest ways to make viewers feel that anything is possible in a TV show is to take out a beloved character early on to prove that nothing is sacred. It’s a risky maneuver that not every series recovers from, but these are the top shows that strategically take out major players during the beginning of their runs.

Recently, it was announced that Dave Filoni would step into the role of chief creative officer at Lucasfilm, indicating a more hands-on approach to shaping upcoming Star Wars projects. Despite numerous projects in the pipeline, one that remains unconfirmed officially is the second season of ‘Ahsoka.’ Given that Filoni penned the first season, he’s the go-to person for insights into the future narrative.
In an episode of EW’s ‘Dagobah Dispatch’ podcast, Filoni not only addressed the potential second season but also delved into the late Ray Stevenson’s role and the challenges arising from his passing, considering his significant part in the story. As a quick recap, Stevenson’s character, Baylan Skoll, left his intentions ambiguous in the first season’s finale, leaving fans speculating about his plans as he stood before the statues of Mortis Gods on Peridea. Filoni characterized Baylan Skoll as a character driven by dangerous ambition.

A few days ago, massive news landed that Dave Filoni was selected as a chief creative officer for Lucasfilm, meaning that he would take a more active role in the development of upcoming Star Wars projects, and we know that there are plenty of projects in the works. However, one project that still hasn’t been confirmed in an official sense is ‘Ahsoka’ season 2, as the first season was successful and ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger.
Filoni himself wrote ‘Ahsoka,’ so he is the best person to ask what’s going to happen in the future and how the story will move forward. In EW’s Dagobah Dipatch podcast, Filoni commented on the potential second season of the show, as well as the late Ray Stevenson and the potential problems that will now arise with his passing, as he was always intended to be a massive part of the story.
