- J.R. Ewing: Well, how does it feel, Cliff? A couple of days ago, you owned my oil field. You were gonna marry my wife. You were expecting a big gusher. Oh, yeah! Millionaire time, that's what it was. And now, you're over your head in debt. And fhe only property you own is a dry hole north of Lubbock.
- [Cliff slowly turns to face him]
- J.R. Ewing: You have succeeded in becoming the *perfect* failure! I just don't believe it.
- [chuckles as he leaves]
- J.R. Ewing: I just don't believe it!
- J.R. Ewing: Do you see what Lucy's doing to Mama? I swear, it would serve her right if we took her ten voting shares away from her.
- [grins at the thought, takes sip of his drink]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Is that all you can think about, voting shares?
- J.R. Ewing: Well, I never thought she should have them in the first place.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, no matter what you think, there's no way you can take those shares away from the people who have them.
- J.R. Ewing: [knows differently] Yeah, I suppose you're right, Pam. Well, I think I'll go upstairs, and say goodnight to Christopher... and turn in myself.
- [leaves, with blackmailed Bobby glaring at him in disgust]
- Bobby Ewing: [re missing Lucy] Mama, she's gonna be fine. Now, you just have to keep thinking that.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: I suppose so. I can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt her.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [gets reminded by those words] Bobby... I've got to go to work. Would you walk me out?
- [signals to Bobby that she doesn't want to alarm Miss Ellie]
- Bobby Ewing: Sure. Excuse me, Mama.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [in their bedroom] Bobby, I have an idea where Lucy might be.
- Bobby Ewing: Where?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You know that photographer, Roger Larson?
- Bobby Ewing: Yeah?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, she was very frightened of him. I even went to see him to tell him to stay away from her.
- Bobby Ewing: Do you think he'd kidnap her?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I don't know, but it's worth the drive to see.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: He told me that he loved me and that he would be able to support me the way J.R. did.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Not on his salary from Wentworth Tool and Die?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head] Oh, no.. he was ready to close a big deal.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: What big deal?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head, shrugs] I don't know. But whatever it was, it fell apart. He wanted me to loan him four million dollars.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [incredulously] Four million dollars?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: You know about Cliff?
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: How?
- J.R. Ewing: Well, it's an oil deal, honey. It's my business.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I think it's going to affect you.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Oh? I don't understand.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Sue Ellen told me that Cliff tried to borrow four million dollars from her. Do you have any idea why he'd want that kind of money?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: [exhales] In a way, yes. The controller at Wentworth Tool and Die told me that Cliff ordered a four million dollar check drafted on the company account.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, if he got the four million from Wentworth, why was he trying to borrow from Sue Ellen?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: [shakes her head] I'm afraid the answer is obvious. He's lost the Wentworth money.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, how? On what?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Something called the Wellington land escrow account. Whatever that is.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Are you telling me that Cliff went into a deal of his own
- [voice rising:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: using Wentworth money, and the deal went sour?
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: [softly] Yes... I think so.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, this is just what I was afraid of. Once Cliff was exposed to all that Wentworth money and power, he'd try and use it for himself.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Pam... calm down...
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I am so sorry for you, Mother.
- Rebecca Barnes Wentworth: Honey, I'm not exactly broke.
