He was dead, but he got better
gridoon202416 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A microchip is discovered inside the dead body of Renée Rienne. Marshall tries to decode it, but half the data appears to be missing. However, the real name of Michael Vaughn - Andre Michaux - is etched on it. Sydney decides to take the chance and meet Vaughn, who is hiding and healing in Nepal, in person. But Prophet Five has been listening into the latest APO conversations, and sends Anna Espinosa - now looking exactly like Sydney Bristow - to get the chip. Meanwhile, Sloane has been tasked with deciphering the hidden message of Page 47, but keeps getting distracted by ghostly visits from his dead daughter Nadia. As I already indicated in a previous comment, I believe that the way this season handled the entire Vaughn situation was wrong: you want to kill him off to further motivate Sydney's quest for truth and justice, fine. But you can't just bring him back to life later and claim that "for several months he was hiding and healing and Jack & Sydney knew it but they kept it a secret to fool Prophet Five". We saw Vaughn die, we felt Sydney's grief, and frankly bringing him back at this point feels more like a move made by writers who prefer to please the fans at any cost, rather than stick to the story they originally wanted to tell. And as interesting as it is to see Jennifer Garner play the bad girl for a change, all this "double" stuff felt more fresh back in season 2, with evil Francie AKA Allison. The Sloane / Nadia parts of the episode work better IMO, and I like how even after his dark turn Sloane remains a three-dimensional character; he praises Sydney to Anna for her strength and sense of duty. Nadia's appearances could perhaps seem a bit silly on paper, but the way I see it she is not there as a ghost - more as a manifestation of Sloane's guilt, doubts, fears, but also plans for the future (which apparently involve one of my favorite recurring characters on the show). These last two episodes made me realize how much I missed Mia Maestro - the new characters of season 5 are okay, but Nadia has a strong personal connection to both Sloane and Sydney that the others cannot in any way match. *** out of 4.

Warning: Spoilers
After the shocks of the previous episode the team are in for another surprise; during the Renée's post mortem a microchip is found implanted in her body... this isn't the surprise though; the surprise is the fact that it has Michael Vaughn's real name etched onto it and has been inside her for thirty years! It is assumed that her father implanted it when she was a child. Thinking that Vaughn might be able to help Jack sends Sydney to Nepal to meet him... there is a problem though; Sloane has had APO bugged so Prophet Five know what is going on and send Anna there ahead of Sydney. Now looking like Sydney she intercepts Sydney, takes the chip and leaves her for dead before going on to meet Vaughn and extract another chip from him; the two chips fit together and provide a location for a cold war era vault. Sloane meanwhile is working on decoding Page Forty Seven but tells Peyton he needs another manuscript to solve it; while she is away we learn that he is just delaying and is being haunted by visions of Nadia.

This episode was pretty good, I'm rather enjoying this season. It is good to see Vaughn back in the action; the new characters aren't bad but none are as interesting as he is... I do hope they give a good explanation as to how he survived though; he looked very dead when he was 'killed'! It was also nice to see Mía Maestro back as Nadia; even if she is only part of Sloane's imagination. It was fun to see Jennifer Garner playing both the heroine and the villain of the story; especially in scenes where the two characters interacted. With only three more episodes to go I can't wait to see how it works out.

"Who are you?"

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode we have the double of Sydney taking over , as well as meeting Vaughn in the place of Sydney. On the other hand we have Sloane trying to decypher page 47 (we actually learn he already knows and it's dragging the situation). The title of this episode it's very fitting, we have two meanings to "I See Dead People" (an obvious referece to the movie "Sixth Sense"). The first one, obviously, it's Sloane seeing Nadia and discussing with her his new position, I actually found their scenes very cool, not sad or depressing as one would expect it to be, it was done well with very lighhearted conversations. Seeing Peyton and Sloane working together it's cool as well. The other meaning , may be, the sight of Vaughn who was supposed to be dead, and now has it is found by the crew was always alive. I didn't love this episode, I didn't hate it either, as I've said , I actually enjoyed Sloane's arc in this episode (with a cliffhanger Stark appeareance) and also his interchanging with "Ghost" Nadia and Peyton. I also really enjoyed the double Sydney arc, culminating in Sydney (the real one ahah) killing her double, it's a pretty efective scene. It's pretty clear early on that Michael knows that she isn't Sydney, from the first kiss, I knew he knew. What I really don't like is : The gang being left behind, just a small Rachel and Thomas scene with no real impact, feels forced, and once again Vaughn being alive and we're being told Jack and Sydney knew all along, please, they didn't knew. They wrote the scripts with one thing in mind, and once they realized the show was cancelled, they had to make it fast as possible, their initial plan it's clear, for Sydney and Jack to find that he was alive much later on in the season. Pretty Good, nonetheless. 7/10 ******* Peter Shelby
