The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

New details on NBC’s desire to pull the NBA away from TNT have emerged, and if it succeeds it could be a disaster for Wbd.
NBC may be about to pick Warner Bros. Discovery’s pocket. It is not a secret that the network has long wanted to get back into the basketball business. After losing the NBA’s broadcasting rights to ESPN in 2002, NBC has been eager to become a part of the league’s next broadcast deal, and now that NBCUniversal is putting its money where its mouth is. The Wall Street Journal reports that, even though two-thirds of the NBA’s broadcast package has already reportedly been secured by Disney and Amazon, NBC is still in talks with the league to acquire what had been Warner Bros. Discovery’s package of games. The move would require a massive cash expenditure from NBCU, but it appears executives...

The NBA’s new round of rights negotiations has reportedly lured NBCUniversal back to the league after an absence of more than two decades.
NBCU is planning to bid $2.5 a year for rights to the games, according to the Wall Street Journal. If the offer is successful, the company would supplant media rival Warner Bros. Discovery, whose TBS and TNT cable networks began carrying NBA games in 1988. TNT has been the flagship Turner network associated with pro basketball, with its Inside the NBA the gold standard of sports studio shows, since 1989.
Disney, meanwhile, has solidified its position as the other linear partner for the NBA. Along with Wbd, Disney had an exclusive window during which to try to hammer out a renewal and appears to have prevailed. The window ended earlier this month, allowing other companies to make bids. While Wbd has not locked down the rights, the Journal said...

Can college basketball turn TV’s fortunes around?
At a moment where linear TV is in something of a lull, with last year’s strikes still being felt and a continued weak advertising market, the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament might be just the thing the market needs.
As usual, this year’s games will be televised on CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV, and will stream online via Max (for the TNT, TBS and TruTV games), Paramount+ (for the CBS games) and the March Madness Live app.
John Bogusz, the head of ad sales for CBS Sports (he will retire later this year), says that this year’s tournament is trending up high single digits in terms of dollars and pricing, as sports outpace entertainment in the marketplace. The entire tournament is “virtually sold out,” he says, with the Final Four and championship in particularly high demand (they are holding...

David Letterman was back on TV last night, and true to form, he brought his own desk piece.
During an appearance on TNT’s Inside the NBA thursday, Letterman presented a series of ideas for how the NBA could improve game play.
If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like the set up for a certain signature bit from Letterman’s two late night shows, you’re not alone.
“Is this anything like the top ten list?” asked Kenny Smith.
“Why would you say that? Would it be bad if it was?” replied Letterman.
The veteran late-night host went on to list a number of, shall we say, out-of-the box ideas for how the game could be changed to make it more exciting, including the addition of new 5- and 10-point lines, and team mascots getting all foul shots in the fourth quarter.

Warner Bros. Discovery is making cable network TruTV a regular home for sports, adding a weeknight sports block and shifting established franchise Impractical Jokers to TBS this summer.
A mix of live sports, original sports programming and ancillary sports content will start appearing on TruTV next Monday, March 11, under the banner “TNT Sports on TruTV.” The block will start at 6 p.m. Et and run through late night.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, aka March Madness, gets under way the following week. Wbd, which shares in March Madness rights with Paramount, often makes use of TruTV as a home for early-round tournament games.
The push toward daily sports programming comes as Wbd, Fox and Disney have embarked on a joint sports-focused streaming venture. The Jv, scheduled to launch this fall, will bring 14 linear network feeds to subscribers via the internet. Apart from the NCAA tournament, TNT is...

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.
The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.
The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new “alterna-casts” that target different audiences; a...

Watch out “Woj” and “Shams,” there’s a new NBA scoop machine: “CNN Sports.”
The biggest NBA move of the week broke on TNT’s Inside the NBA Tuesday night, with the studio team revealing that ESPN analyst Doc Rivers had agreed to become the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. Their source? “CNN Sports.”
“Ok, are we ready for breaking news?” Inside the NBA host Adam Lefkoe began. “We have news in from CNN…” “From CNN?!” analyst Jamal Crawford responded. “From CNN Sports,” Lefkoe continued, breaking the Rivers news on-air.
Bleacher Report, TNT Sports’ digital news brand, subsequently shared the news itself, also citing CNN Sports.
And not long after the news broke on TNT, CNN.com published a story (the byline was just “CNN Staff”) with more detail on the move. It wasn’t until Wednesday morning that ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (“Woj”) and The Athletic’s Shams Charania (“Shams”) confirmed the move.

Warner Bros. Discovery is embarking on a notable rebrand to one of its core divisions.
The company is rebranding its Wbd Sports division as TNT Sports, embracing the name of one of its biggest cable channels (and its home for the NBA), and unifying its global sports brands under one name (the company has already rebranded its U.K. and Latin America sports channels as TNT Sports).
The newly named TNT Sports has some of the biggest sports rights outside of ESPN, including the NBA, NHL and MLB, as well as the March Madness college basketball tournament. Already, the live games and studio shows use the channels they run on (e.g., NBA on TNT, NHL on TNT, MLB on TBS), so the rebranding is more of a business-to-business move, encompassing the full umbrella of sports brands.
Bleacher Report, Golf Digest and the owned-and-operated businesses will all function as part of the TNT Sports family.

The reign of King Charles — the CNN show, not the British monarch — began rather quietly Wednesday.
The weekly show, hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley, drew just 501,00 viewers for its debut, according to same-day Nielsen ratings (it adjusted up a little from 486,000 in fast nationals). It finished a distant third among the biggest cable news channels in total viewers and didn’t really moving the needle from CNN’s recent averages in the hour. In fact, it ranks as the smallest audience of any of CNN’s primetime debuts this year.
King Charles was one of the last big moves of the brief Chris Licht era at CNN. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network announced the show in late April — six weeks before Licht was let go following a profile in The Atlantic that was poorly received among network staffers. (Mark Thompson became CEO of CNN in October.)

CNN has set Nov. 29 as the premiere date for King Charles, the primetime limited series hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley.
The show will air at 10 p.m. Et on Wednesdays, although the second week will be an hour earlier because of the GOP debate on Dec. 6.
In a promo, King called the show “our unfiltered take on the biggest stories of the day.”
The show’s genesis was during the tenure of Chris Licht, the former CNN boss who was ousted in June. Licht had sought to shore up the network’s primetime lineup with star personalities, even if that meant once-a-week primetime shows. MSNBC already has done that, with The Rachel Maddow Show now appearing only on Mondays after Maddow signed a new contract that pulled back on her regular appearances.

Roundball fans, rejoice! At last, the 2023-24 NBA season is about to begin, as the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers are set to reignite their rivalry from last year’s Western Conference Finals on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Et, live from Ball Arena in Denver.
Each team is set to play a schedule of 80+ games this NBA season, meaning those contests will be spread across many different channels. Sling TV will get some of those networks, such as ESPN and TNT; however; the lack of regional sports networks (RSNs) on the service makes it a less-than-ideal choice for completists who want to stream all of their team’s games this year.
There are still choices for cord-cutting NBA fans who want to stream their team from start to finish this season, however. Check them out below to get a breakdown of which The Streamabe recommends most highly!

Max fans who don’t relish the idea of coughing up $9.99 per month more to access the Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming and games CEO and president Perrette told Variety co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton at Variety‘s Entertainment & Technology Summit Thursday. “The only place in the world where it’s...

Warner Bros. Discovery aims to make all of the sporting events it has developed over the years for cable crowds available to streamers at the same time — so long as they are willing to pay extra for the privilege.
The media giant, which enjoys lucrative rights deals with the NBA, Major League Baseball, the NHL and the NCAA “March Madness” tournament, wants to use those properties to bring eyeballs to Max, its streaming service. And so, starting Oct. 5, the company will launch a new “Bleacher Report” add-on package to Max. The offering will also include access to TNT’s popular “Inside the NBA” studio program and live international events such as “24 Hours of Le Mans.” Warner Bros. Discovery vows to stream 300 live games per year.

David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, gave Greta Gerwig her flowers on Wednesday at Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology. Considering the box office for “Barbie,” a few dozen (pink) roses was probably the very least he could do.
“Greta Gerwig gets the most credit. She’s an extraordinary genius,” Zaslav said when asked by a Goldman Sachs analyst what lessons Warner Bros. took from what is now the no. 1 film of the year.
Zaslav added that Gerwig “worked very effectively” and “right down to the wire” with the Warner Bros. Pictures marketing team.
“Every division of this company got behind ‘Barbie,'” he said. “Every asset that we have was turned pink.”
Zaslav means that both literally and figuratively. He had Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Ernie Johnson talking “Barbie” on “Inside the NBA.” If you watched a futbol match in Sweden, the field turned pink during halftime.

So, we're going to run those by you guys just in case you might not have seen them. Tonight, June 5, 2023, ABC is going to re-air the episode that originally aired back on February 14, 2023. With the writers strike sowing doubt about long-term scripted entertainment, and the overall advertising market still in a downturn, Warner Bros. Discovery and other major media companies are now leaning into a form of entertainment that has proven to be resilient: Live sports.
And it is a particularly strong moment for sports at Wbd, which is fresh off the March Madness basketball tournament, at the beginning of the MLB season, and smack in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoffs.
“Our strategy in many ways is very different from other players, right? We’re not into tonnage, we’re really about picking and having the most premium sports out there,” says Luis Silberwasser, the chairman and CEO of Wbd Sports. “Whether it’s on TNT or TBS, or TruTV, it just it creates a cultural moment, right? So when these games are happening on primetime, people come to us.

We know a lot more about Max — the new forthcoming streaming platform from Warner Bros. Discovery — than we did at this time last week. Thanks to a huge press event on April 12, we know it’ll be launching May 23, and that it will retain the same prices HBO Max currently charges, with an added Ultimate tier that will offer more features for $19.99. We also know Max will keep the features your current account offers for six months after the May 23 switchover.

One subject that got barely any mention was Wbd’s plans to offer live sports and news on Max. The company has just barely begun dipping its toe in the water in offering live sports via streaming in the United States, presenting several U.S. Men's and Women's National Soccer Team games on HBO Max this season.

The NBA playoffs start with the annual play-in tournament on Tuesday, April 11, which means there’s still a little time left to make sure you don’t miss a second of postseason action this year. But with options like Hulu + Live TV, Directv Stream and YouTube TV all priced at over $70 per month, you might be hoping there’s a more budget-friendly option to stream the NBA playoffs in 2023.
Luckily for you, Sling TV has you covered again this year. ESPN, TNT, ABC and NBA TV will split broadcasting duties for the NBA postseason in 2023, and the cheapest way to see all of these games is Sling.
Plans start at $40 per month, which means Sling comes in at around $30 cheaper than the other options for watching the NBA playoffs. But thanks to a limited-time offer from Sling, new users can get half off their first month's subscription.

A news King and Sir Charles are getting ready to mix it up in an unorthodox way.
Gayle King and Charles Barkley are finalizing a deal that would have them jointly lead a primetime hour each week on CNN, according to people familiar with the matter. The pact is not complete and there is always the risk it may not come to fruition, one of these people says. CNN declined to make executives available for comment.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that a deal involving King was nearing completion, but it has been an open secret in TV-news circles that CNN has been courting both personalities — and others like them — for some time. Puck reported on negotiations with both King and Barkley earlier this year.
CBS News declined to offer immediate comment on expectations it had for King, who is also the center of its “CBS Mornings” on weekdays...

“First Take” co-host Max Kellerman had some harsh words for SEC football fans Thursday morning, labeling them as being “easy to propagandize” and “almost immune to facts.”
Kellerman was responding to his co-host Stephen A. Smith’s assertion that the SEC canceling or delaying football this fall would have political consequences for President Donald Trump. Kellerman disagreed with Smith’s argument, claiming that the southeastern part of the country is Trump’s base and they will allow the president to “shift the blame” to someone, or something, else.
“You made the argument a couple weeks ago, you thought if SEC football wasn’t played that could swing the general election because people in Trump’s base would be very upset that they didn’t have football, which is practically a religion down there,” Kellerman said in the video you watch above. “I disagreed because [Trump] would simply shift blame because the pandemic is raging.

Interviewer Gayle King has been condemned by many for her interview with Lisa Leslie that raised the Bryant Colorado incident. Her questions angered Snoop Dogg, among others, and he lashed out with threats before apologizing.
“You have to tell the picture in totality,’ Barkley said. “We’re not making Kobe out to be no hero. We’re celebrating his basketball excellence. We understand what happened in Colorado.

Exclusive: Inside The NBA analyst and former NBA star Kenny Smith has inked a multi-series pact with director-producer Deon Taylor (Meet The Blacks), which includes a zinger out the gate in the shape of new reality TV show Ready For The League, showcasing 2018’s hottest college basketball talent.
The pact is formally between Taylor’s Hidden Empire Film Group and Smith’s Seg Productions and the duo are already underway on their first show, in which Smith, one of the most respected NBA analysts around, will profile a different draft prospect in each 30-minute episode. Taylor, himself a former college player at San Diego State and later a pro in Germany, will direct.
In a similar vein to Jon Gruden’s Qb Camp series for ESPN, two-time NBA champ Smith will sit down with college stars and discuss what it takes to make it in the pro league both on and off the court.

It’s no secret that Saturday Night Live is in a creative rut this fall, struggling to hold on to the momentum of its Emmy-winning Season 42. Its final broadcast of 2017, led by returning host Kevin Hart, was very much in line with what the show’s been delivering as of late: a mediocre-at-best episode with very little to get excited about.

Kevin Hart is shot, yes. This is a common joke he makes about himself, being a dude who stands at about 5’4”. That is below average. And it’s about 21 inches short of the Hall of Fame basketball player Shaquille O’Neal — who Hart played during an “SNL” sketch parodying TNT’s “Inside the NBA” postgame show. Hart nailed Shaq’s notoriously rambling style and penchant for going off on tangents at every opportunity, not to mention his faux-feud with co-host Charles Barkley, here played by “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson. The bit also included Alex Moffat as Ernie Johnson and Chris.

It’s the last “Saturday Night Live” of 2017, and you’d think NBC’s perennial sketch show would go out with the bang. Getting Kevin Hart to host and the Foo Fighters as the musical guest is pretty much a case of busting out the big guns, after all.
Unfortunately, this episode of “Saturday Night Live” can barely be considered an extravaganza, and the holiday aspects of it aren’t even memorable or strong enough to use “it’s a holiday episode!” as an excuse.
So, what happened?

Let’s start with the monologue. Kevin Hart goes with the standup routine monologue, which is obviously a good idea for a standup comedian — in theory. Boy, is this monologue a good idea in theory. (His execution is good too, but…...

There probably aren't bigger shoes to fill than Shaquille O'Neal's -- but Kevin Hart gave it a shot!
Despite their nearly two-foot height disparity, the 5' 4" Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star played the retired 7' 1" basketball pro during his hosting stint on Saturday Night Live's Christmas episode, hilariously teasing Shaq's hosting persona on TNT's Inside the NBA.
During the sketch, Hart's Shaq character confused his NBA show co-hosts with stream of consciousness ramblings, before standing up --revealing giant stilts -- as he challenged Charles Barkley, played by Kenan Thompson, to a game of 1-on-1.
Check out the moment below.
And before you go feeling bad for Shaq, the basketball icon laughed off the bit on Instagram, writing to Hart, "@kevinhart4real you a fool for this one #laughatmypain #senseofhumor #laughatyourself."
Hey... imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
The bit also went over extremely well with basketball fans on Twitter, who showered the social...
