Screen spoke to the first-time feature producer of well-received Edinburgh title Moon Dogs, backed by Welsh, Irish and Scottish film bodies.
Moon Dogs is a gem that unearthed at the Edinburgh Film Festival, a Scottish Y Tu Mamá También that sees two half-brothers (Jack Parry Jones and newcomer Christy O’Donnell) journey from the Shetlands to Glasgow pursuing romantic and musical dreams.
First time feature film producer Kathy Speirs, who set up her company Un Helly Aa / Clydebank Films in 2012, tells how she managed to persuade the Welsh, Scottish and Irish film boards to finance a film [budgeted between £500k-£1m] from a first time director (Philip John) and producer, featuring no star names.
What were the origins of the film?
The film came about because of my friendship with screenwriters Raymond Friel and Derek Boyle, who I have known for a number of years and they have written two feature films, The Calcium Kid (2004) with Orlando Bloom and Botched (2007), starring...

While there may be a shortage of theatrical horror films scoring a nationwide release, there are still plenty of titles touring the festival circuit and coming out via VOD and DVD that are equally worthy of your attention. The foreign film market has also been churning out a lot of noteworthy titles. Unfortunately, films that don’t get the big-studio marketing treatment often wind up overlooked. To shed some light on some of these lesser-known features, we started running a recurring feature spotlighting a series of impressive films released over the past five years, which may not have received all the publicity they deserved (due to financial limitations, being overshadowed by larger scale releases, or myriad other reasons). Since that segment has proved popular, we’ve decided to continue on and open the timeframe up to ten years.
We’re showcasing five titles from the past ten years that may have passed you by,...

Director Kit Ryan's feature debut, Botched , was a bloody tale thick with dark comedy and featured actors Stephen Dorff, Sean Pertwee and Jamie Murray. It took home the Best Feature prize at the New York City Horror Film Festival in 2007 and was subsequently released direct-to-dvd here in the States a few years back, so what has Ryan been up to since then? Apparently he's in development on Dementamania and we've got the story details: When a software engineer gets stung by a mysterious bug, it unlocks the door to a secret world inside his head, causing nightmarish fantasies and vivid hallucinations. As the bite rash spreads over his entire body, reality begins drifting further and further away, and the strange effects are felt by everyone around him. Early teaser art...

While the title isn’t the most original in the world, Dementamania still has a nice ring to it. The boys over at Quiet Earth discovered a bit of info on the film the other day, and it sounds too weird to pass up.
Dementamania is about a successful software engineer who’s bitten by a mysterious bug one morning in his apartment. By the end of the day he’s stuck in a world of violent hallucinations that, if the illustration on the right (done by comic book artist John Higgins) is any indication, don’t fare well for his fellow office workers.
Written by newcomer Anis Shlewet, Ronin Pictures have brought in Botched (DVD review) director Kit Ryan to direct Dementamania, with shooting set to commence in February. Hopefully we’ll hear more soon so keep your eyeballs open!

We just found out about an insane looking new scifi horror film that's set to start lensing in February '09 called Dementamania. A kafka-esque story of violence and listening to the dark hallucinations of our unconscious mind, Dementamania was written by newcomer Anis Shlewet and will be directed by Kit Ryan of Botched fame. Here's a brief synopsis:
A successful young software engineer is bitten by a weird-looking bug in his apartment at breakfast one morning and by the end of day is trapped in a mad world of violent hallucinations.
Bitten by a weird bug? Sounds deliciously trippy no? It also sounds vaguely Gilliamesque but I doubt it'll end up going that direction. This one's definitely staying high on the Qe radar.
