Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge. Due to the large volume of films that the Toronto International Film Festival screens every year, participants often find themselves unsure of how to decide what to see. To that end, festival organisers often distribute the films into numerous programmes to reflect commonalities among them. The Contemporary World Cinema Programme, to that end, looks at the features from filmmakers from around the world, showcasing the talents being displayed from numerous countries.
The full lineup for the 2015 Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Programme has now been announced, adding to the previously announced slate of Canadian Films in the Programme. The films, as well as their official synopses, can be seen below.

Award-winning filmmaker Leanne Pooley utilizes the letters and memoirs of New Zealand soldiers and nurses along with state of the art animation to tell the true story of the 1915 battle of Gallipoli.

Unfortunately we don’t have access to the Time and Relative Dimension in Space machine, otherwise we could shoot forwards to September 19 for the start of the new series of Doctor Who (because what else would you do with the ability to travel anywhere across time and space?). Instead we’re going to have to wait a little bit longer – just over a month as it stands – before we can get back to the adventures of Peter Capaldi’s twelfth Doctor.
The new man in the Tardis had a solid debut year in 2014, steadily growing into the role the longer series 8 went on and assuaging any fears fans had over the casting of a Doctor very different to what we’d become accustomed to over the past decade. Now more comfortable in the role, there should be lot more confidence from all involved going forwards, meaning series 9 should be an improvement.

“An incredible selection” was the verdict given by jury president Darren Aronofsky about the Berlinale’s 2015 competition line-up.
Speaking at the the closing gala, Aronofsky said: “Hats off to Dieter [Kosslick], the curators have made an incredible selection. It’s been incredibly difficult to decide on the prizes (…) there were so many quality films that it was hard not to award many, many of the films.“
In fact, the International Jury, which included actors Daniel Brühl and Audrey Tautou and the former Golden Bear winner Claudia Llosa from Peru, gave awards to nine of the 19 Competition titles by splitting two of the prizes, and showed the unanimity of its decisions by all being on stage together for the presentation of the awards in the Berlinale Palast.

It’s probably safe to say that a film genre with a fairly small resume’ is the German Western. Even in the heyday of “spaghetti” westerns in the 1960s and 70s there weren’t many horse operas originating from Germany. And although it utilizes many of the conventions of both classic and post-modern Western cinema, the new film The Dark Valley is a real treat for fans of Western movies looking for something different and memorable.
The Dark Valley begins with the arrival of Greider (Sam Riley) at a small village in the frozen “badlands” of the German-Austrian Alps.

The race to make a new live-action version of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book just got hotter. With Jon Favreau reaching the casting stage for Disney, Warner Bros. has tracked down a director to replace Alejandro González Iñárritu, who had a scheduling conflict. The new man for the gig is none other than Andy Serkis. While Ron Howard had been touted at one time, Serkis will be the one to bring the film to life. It’s certainly an intriguing choice. While the actor has primarily been known for his work in front of the camera, he’s increasingly been gaining experiencing calling the shots. Peter Jackson put him in charge of second unit work on the Hobbit trilogy, and Serkis oversaw some of the best work of the films to date, including the barrel sequence from The Desolation Of Smaug. In addition to the years he’s spent...

Among the many projects that moviegoers might be able to smell the Rock cooking up is graphic novel adaptation Lore, which for a while last September had Barry Sonnenfeld attached to direct. It appears the Men In Black veteran and studio Warner Bros. couldn’t come to terms on a budget, so he’s jumped ship while hanging on to an executive producer credit. In his place? Newcomer David Green. The new man with the megaphone has largely worked on shorts, but does have one feature credit to his name – Echo, the tale of teens receiving strange text messages from a new construction site – set for release via Relativity next year. Now, however, it appears he’ll be making a similar jump to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Rupert Wyatt and Jurassic Park IV’s Colin Trevorrow, graduating to a big star (Mr Rock, if he has time...

With Tito Vilanova stepping aside at Barcelona, the Catalan giants are in the market for a manager again. However this time for the first time since 2003 they will not be making an internal appointment.
With many of the top managers already in a job it means that Barcelona will have to go for a big name and face the compensation fee or go for someone who is relatively unknown to the footballing masses.
The new man faces the tough challenge of managing arguably the best club team football has ever seen and all the scrutiny that comes with that. But also with the challenge of changing the view that the major power in European football has shifted to Germany and Bayern Munich.

There’s a movie based on the worst board game you can imagine – the Ouija board, specifically – and it’s being directed by McG. How much could the script matter here?
Well, THR tells us that MGM has taken the effort to hire a new screenwriter for its upcoming film version of the mysticism-based game, after Tron: Legacy scribes Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz had to focus their efforts on Once Upon a Time, a fantasy series they’re executive producing for ABC. The new man behind the words is Evan Spiliotopoulos, who’s responsible for many direct-to-video sequels to Disney movies. Not that promising a resume. He’s also been hired to write Wanted 2, but, again: is that a movie where the script means anything?
Plot details are being kept under wraps (ha!), but it’s described as being inspired by Indiana Jones and The Mummy, which is...

In this episode of Off the Map, Lily needs to travel to San Miguel to get meds for her patient, and the trip with Ben leads to a discovery that wasn’t necessarily welcome. Tommy deals with a patient with an awkward problem and finds himself connecting more with the patient’s girlfriend. Mina must deal with her personal feelings when she discovers a fact about her dying patient.
I was pleasantly surprised with this episode. I was beginning to lose faith in this show altogether, and have been waiting for it to progress. I think that we finally got to some meat with the Lily/Ben/Ryan/Ben’s vegetable wife situation. When Lily finds out that Ben is using his wife and keeping her alive for money for the clinic, I really felt Lily retracting from him a bit. His relationship with Ryan would probably not be sufficient for that.

Despite existing on a channel that spells its name with an erroneous "z," Spartacus is actually an enjoyable show. Unfortunately, the show's future seemed unclear after star Andy Whitfield developed cancer, only to recover and then become ill again (that's Whitfield in the above image, by the way). At first the network dealt with the delay by producing a sequel series (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which does not involve the titular character at all), but now they've had to replace Whitfield. The new man playing the Thracian gladiator-cum-rebel leader? Fellow Australian Liam McIntyre, whom you probably won't know unless you are also from Australia. And if you're concerned about his physique, don't be: Mr. McIntyre had been working on a thriller called Frozen Moments for which the director had asked him to lose a significant amount of weight. (Invoking a [...]...

New York, Nov 8 – Reports are abuzz that Ivana Trump has a new boyfriend in her life.
The new man is Michael Kennedy, a dapper French art dealer in his late 50s, reports the New York Post.
A source said they met while dining at separate tables at the Plaza Athenee here three months ago.
While Ivana is still technically married to her estranged fourth husband Rossano Rubicondi, friends said, “She is really very happy.”

Oksana's New Lawyer -- Lucky Number 40
Oksana Grigorieva showed up to court this morning for a hearing in her child support case with Mel Gibson -- and wouldn't you know it ... she has a new lawyer!
The new man in Oksana's life is Mitchell Jacobs -- a family law attorney who has been a Board Certified Family Law Specialist since 1986.
We're told Jacobs was brought in today as a specialist because today's hearing involves a certain technicality and they reached out to Jacobs because he's a family law specialist.
Sources say it is unclear whether Jacobs will remain on full-time.
As we first reported, Oksana has used 39 different lawyers so far in her child support case with Mel Gibson. The latest point of contention -- whether the judge's ruling that Mel has to amp up his child support payments to $20,000/month includes the housing payments Mel has been making.
As the old saying goes,...

Boom. Round 3 had started folks and it had started with a bang. Records for the competition falling all over the place, and some of the impressive statistics for yesterdays poll (don't forget this is in 24 hours)are here:

And what did it mean for the competition? Well it means that Fox Mulder may just be the favourite for this competition, a staggering amount of votes for 'The X-Files' man, and he makes his way into the quarter finals. And that means that early front runner Dean Winchester has stumbled out of the competition. a very tough run ended by Fox for the Supernatural lead. He deserves a lot of kudos though, and for the competition to lose Supernatural before the final eight is certainly a surprise, the show facing too much opposition to make it a double win for 2010 after taking the Show Competition.

It's been years since Legendary Pictures announced that they had a big screen adaptation of John Milton's epic "Paradise Lost" in the works. The tale of Lucifer's failed rebellion in Heaven and his involvement with Adam and Eve's fall from grace was going to be a big budget spectacle directed by Scott Derrickson of The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake fame. Since the project was first announced in 2006, little has been heard about the status of the production which lead me to believe that perhaps it had died in pre-production. Turns out I was wrong.
News today via Variety, is that Legendary is still working to have the project made and they've moved on from Derrickson and found themselves a new helmer for the film. The new man in the driver seat? None other than Dark City and The Crow director Alex Proyas.

With five seasons spent crafting an enrapturing mystery with dozens of questions left to be answered going into its final season, Lost had a lot of things on its agenda and to be fair it didn’t really give fans what they wanted or needed. Would they get off the island? Would any of the characters get the closure their stories had been hinting at? Yes, but mostly no. With each episode a badly needed answer was crossed off the list, but the mystery of what the whole story meant received a tacked on ending with characters whose derivation seemed like a desperate grab at a rationale that wouldn’t contradict too many of the arbitrary rules and events they’d turned into canon while making sense of others. It didn’t work.

There is a corner of my imagination where the Lost saga continues on beyond the moment where we left it (or rather, where Lost left us), with Hurley receiving stewardship of The Island from dying Jack Shephard and then deputizing Benjamin Linus to sit as his right hand and help execute the holy function of metaphorical wine bottling. How will The Dude and Bug-Eyes manage The Light of the World differently from Jacob? We can only dream. But at least we now know how that story begins thanks to “The New Man In Charge,” a 12-minute coda to the final...

How could I miss the chance to stare down Benjamin Linus? Or Michael Emerson for that matter. Either way I'd be talking to a fascinating character. Film fans will remember him from Saw as well a a number of other features. TV fans can look back on his devastating turn as a psychopath on The Practice. This virtual roundtable gave me and several other journalists the chance to lob questions about his tenure on Lost his process and his future plans.
Q - Are you satisfied with Ben's overall character arc throughout the course of the series? Is there anything you wish Damon and Carlton did differently with the character of Ben Linus?
A - Michael Emerson: Yes, I loved the entire arc and was especially delighted with Ben's end in the finale. It was finer and more satisfying than anything I could have imagined.

Although "Lost" left the airwaves three months ago, the saga isn't over if you picked up a copy of "Lost: The Complete Collection," the epic Blu-ray set that just arrived in stores today.
"Lost: The Complete Collection" is almost better described as a mysterious artifact of the Island than a mere Blu-ray set. Much like the series itself, the set contains several hidden secrets that require no small amount of patience and ingenuity to puzzle out. It's not all a laborious effort, of course, as the casual fan can simply enjoy the set as it is without rolling their sleeves up too far — but where's the fun in that? After the jump, check out some of my favorite features from one of the final pieces of "Lost" merchandise, and certainly the most extensive one yet.

Chicago – A Blu-ray review of the controversial final season of “Lost” is not the place to get into arguments over the quality of the actual finale, so I’ll get my opinion out of the way quickly and then we can discuss the Blu-ray release more than the ending specifically — the final season of “Lost” is arguably the best final season of any program ever and the last episode is the perfect bookend for a show too ambitious to be truly influential. I promise to get into that more in coverage of the upcoming Emmys and in “Best of the Year” features in a few months. For now, let’s move on to the best TV Blu-ray of the season, even if you disagree with my opinion of the quality of the finale or the overall show.

Today, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released both Lost: The Complete Collection and Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season on DVD and Blu-ray. The box sets contain the latest--and possibly last--in-canon adventures of the Lost cast via the twelve-minute epilogue entitled "The New Man in Charge," which stars Michael Emerson, Jorge Garcia, and... Well, that would be telling. Over at The Daily Beast, I discuss "Lost: The New Man in Charge" as well as my thoughts about the strength or weakness of the epilogue as a narrative outgrowth of the series in a piece entitled "Secrets of Lost Revealed on New DVD." Plus, I check in with fellow television critics and writers Maureen Ryan (now of AOL Television), Entertainment Weekly's Jeff "Doc" Jensen, Time's James Poniewozik, and New York Magazine's Emily Nussbaum to see their reactions to the Lost epilogue, how it fits in with the contentious ending of the series itself,...

When my friend Tamara and I discussed the Lost series finale back in the spring, I told her that I felt emotionally satisfied, but not intellectually. In the end, I think that my declaration applies to my feelings for the entire final season of Lost. A lot of people have already discussed, analyzed, tore apart, praised and raged on Lost’s final season, and the series finale in particular. There were, ultimately things I liked about it, which was the emotional aspect. I liked seeing the old characters again, seeing the group come together. I like seeing how the relationships between the characters turned out on the island, back in the real world and in the afterlife. I can even admit that I cried when the group was all in the church together and Jack died out in the jungle.

Things are going to be plenty different when 'Brothers & Sisters' returns to the ABC lineup this fall. Not only will the show be minus regulars like Rob Lowe, Luke Grimes and Emily VanCamp, but thanks to the one-year flash forward the creators of the show have put together, Calista Flockhart's character will pass right by that pesky mourning period for her late husband (played by Lowe) and establish a new love interest.
The new man in her life will be 'Army Wives' actor Jeremy Davidson, according to Entertainment Weekly. Davidson, whose character hasn't been given a name yet, will appear in a multi-episode arc as a man Kitty first meets while she's living in Ojai during her year of transition.

On Friday, Jezebel posted the highly anticipated, 12-minute Lost epilogue (titled “The New Man in Charge”) in its entirety, which was promptly taken down and replaced with a much shorter clip. The full epilogue is included on the Season Six Lost DVD and Blu-ray set —out August 24 for all you geeks waiting with bated breath—and is supposed to tie up a plethora of loose ends that the finale didn’t. How did Jezebel get it so early? Did they have an Ethan-style mole embedded at ABC? Well, no. I emailed Jezebel’s editor Jessica Coen (a Vf.com alum and rabid Lost fan). In short, she said that they saw the clip on YouTube, hosted it on their servers, and then took it down when Disney (ABC’s parent company) kindly asked if they would please not do that. For people (like me) who saw the epilogue before it was taken down,...

It’s been a little more than two months since Lost aired its final episode, fittingly entitled “The End.” Much has been said and written about how the soulful sci-fi drama wrapped things up — or didn’t, depending on your perspective. There were those who loved it, there those who hated it, and there were those who to this day still don’t quite know what to think. The only people who’ve remained somewhat silent on the matter are the two men who wrote the episode, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof. Only recently have the pair broken their usual post-season radio silence,...

Video from a big extra on the "Lost" Season 6 DVD has hit the web, and it's enough of a tease to leave us wanting more.
The clip (which is below) is part of a 12-minute extra chapter called "The New Man in Charge," and it answers at least one of the lingering questions from the six-year run of "Lost." Is it a huge one? No. But after watching it, we have a pretty good sense of how the survivors of Oceanic 815 managed to keep receiving Dharma Initiative food drops.
Michael Emerson, whose character Ben Linus is at the center of the clip, says the 12 minutes of new material is a "treat" for fans of the show.
"The writers, I think, wanted to give our viewers a little treat, a little dessert at the end of the series," Emerson tells AccessHollywood.com, which had the clip first. "I think that they...

What kind of mysteries will be answered in the new Lost epilogue? Well for one, how about those pallet drops? As you can see in this clip from Access Hollywood, Ben visits the facility where all of those cheesy Dharma labels are produced, and comes face to face with the guys responsible for loading all of that yummy high-calorie Ranch dip for shipment to Lost's mysterious island.
The epilogue, titled "The New Man in Charge," is one of the most anticipated features on the Lost: The Complete Series collection being released this month; mostly because it is promised to provide more of what some fans feel they didn't get from Lost's sixth and final season: answers. Now if we can get around to why the island was underwater in purgatory, why Mib wanted to kill Desmond even though he needed him to cork the island, why Locke...

Now, as some of you might know, DarkUFO has posted a detailed synopsis of "The New Man in Charge," Lost's eleven-minute epilogue that will be included on both Lost: The Complete Sixth Season and Lost: The Complete Collection. Seeing as this will probably be the last Lost spoiler ever released, I felt it appropriate to give you an alternative. A sort of spoiler-lite that gives you some idea but nothing that would really spoil it for you. So, as Spoiler Guy used to do, I've rigged up a little quiz game. There will be five questions, each with four answers. Some of those answers will be correct, some of them won't. It'll be a nice, healthy alternative to potentially ruining the final mysteries of the show for yourself.
1) One word isn't mentioned in the vignette:
Jack Dude Island Balance
2) Two of the following characters make a reappearance.

With a sideways world conclusion that left many fans unsatisfied and open-ended issues, the Lost finale will go down as one of the most debated, analyzed events in TV history.
The answers to so many island mysteries may only exist in our imaginations, but a 12-minute extra on the Season 6 DVD will shed at least some light on post-finale Island life.
Starring Michael Emerson and Jorge Garcia, ''The New Man in Charge'' will show us what Hurley and Ben do with Jack and fake Locke dead and the rest of the survivors gone.
''Ben is going around to Dharma installations and closing some down,'' Emerson tells EW. ''There are some good surprises.'' And believe it or not, ''it does answer questions.''
What do you think those answers might be?...

In the series finale of Lost, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) becomes the island's new protector and Ben (Michael Emerson) agrees to help him, much like Richard Alpert helped Jacob. In the final minutes of the episode, when they see each other in the afterlife, Ben and Hurley quietly exchange compliments about how well they did their jobs on the island; an indication that they worked together on the island for some time.
Soon after the finale aired, Michael Emerson talked about some extra footage that would be part of the DVD sets. He said, "You can call it an epilogue, a lost scene. It's a lot. It’s 12 or 14 minutes that opens a window onto that gap of unknown time between Hurley becoming number one and the end of the series."
We've since learned that that footage will be called "The New Man in...
