One of Television's Greatest Hockey Documentaries...EVER !!!
FlaminGaminMo19 October 2006
As a die Hard hockey Fan, for over 30 years... I must say, this is one of the best HOCKEY DOCUMENTARIES... of all time! If you loved this, You will also love the LEGENDS OF HOCKEY documentary series (from 1996 - Season 1, and 2000 - Season 2) as well. I've always loved hockey. And I love the documentaries. This is about as good as one can do for the greatest sport there is. I especially liked early history tidbits that I've never seen or read before. The commentary is excellent, and draws in the viewer by quickly catching his/her attention. I especially like the segmenting of the series into chronological time-periods, with some occasional cross-overs. The series seems to pick all the favorite times and players that we all remember, as if we were there again. Plus, it adds some very interesting and unusual facts and oddities, to make the show more entertaining. I loved it... I rate it a HUGE 10 +++++. YOU WILL NOT BE Disappointed. I cannot wait till the 6-DVD series is released in November 2006.

If ever a documentary for the hockey fan? This is it!

Hockey: A people's history is not just about the game of hockey, it is about people living their dreams. It is one of the most impressive documentaries I have ever seen on anything. And I enjoy documentaries.

This documentary not only told the story of how the game got off the ground to become the National Hockey League and a game Canada is obsessed with; It also filmed it by recreating famous people, games and more in live film. No boring pictures with a "hockey guy" telling a story, in every episode you get to see actors play these legends of the game. And when you do see the boring pictures, the zoom in on them to give it that interesting look instead of a flat image.

I saw one episode of Hockey a People's History on CBC. I was so blown away that I bought the entire DVD set. I do not do this.

Only bad thing I can think of with this documentary is the DVD box set is only made for WIDE screen TVs and it squishes the picture on a regular box screen TV. So when it does this you have to remember Wayne Gretzky, Maurice Richard, Eddie Shore etc. are not as tall as Shaq. They are not 7 feet tall. Other then that, if you like Hockey I think you will enjoy.

Great hockey series
RealLiveClaude18 February 2008
This a documentary which gives some great unknown facts about the history of hockey, from its origins to its current state today.

Not only it offers the story of how the game started, it gives also facts how it succeeded beside its pro side, like the ladies leagues, the aboriginal teams, blacks who wants to integrate the game, hockey in war time, the European development...etc. All fields are covered, and describes how the French and English population enjoyed the game.

French version is done with Quebec comedian James Hyndman, with some french guests like former hockey greats Guy Lafleur, Jean Beliveau, and local writers who commented about this great sport in books...

Don't miss it !

Wow. Is the only word to describe this powerhouse CBC documentary. I am so glad I found this series when I did! If you are a hockey fan and have any historical interest in the sport and/or the country of Canada itself whatSOever, then this boxed set is for you. I can't say enough positive things about it other than the series makes me wish I had grown up in Canada. Simply outstanding.

The only negative is that the publisher clearly assumed that widescreen televisions are being used en masse. Note: They're not. Not everyone feels the need to spend $X thousand on technology *just* for the sake of buying a new TV.
