I don’t usually cover shorts, I always seem to have more features to review than I do time, but I had to make an exception for The Shepherd. I remembered reading Frederick Forsyth’s novella when I was growing up, and a reading of it by the late Al Maitland has been a Christmas tradition on CBC radio since 1979. So, telling myself that since The Academy considers forty minutes to be feature length I finally used the Disney+ subscription my wife got us and checked it out.

While Netflix is still waiting for its first Best Picture win, the king of streaming is on the cusp of taking home a different Oscar: the one for Best Animated Feature.
“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” directed by the Oscar winner and Mark Gustafson, is a reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale about a wooden puppet who comes to life. Featuring the voices of Gregory Mann and David Bradley as Pinocchio and his father, the carpenter Geppetto, respectively, the film also includes a memorable turn from two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, nominated again this year for her work in “TÁR,” as the mistreated monkey Spazzatura.
The film received rave reviews when it premiered and is considered a visually stunning interpretation of the source material that leans into darker themes about life and death. It is a perfect example of how animation lends itself to more than just so-called movies for children.

When Jordan Peele's directorial debut "Get Out" managed four Oscar nominations and a win for Best Original Screenplay in 2018, it felt like an unprecedented moment for horror. Historically, the Academy often neglects horror films, along with a general distaste against genre cinema as a whole. Despite being an early 2017 release, "Get Out" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year and maintained its relevance throughout a particularly tough awards season -- it was an unstoppable force.
Tragically, instead of changing the game, the Academy Awards success story of "Get Out" starts to feel more and more like a special anomaly with each passing year. Despite a strong campaign for Lupita Nyong'o's revelatory dual-lead performance in "Us," Peele's sophomore film tackling American individualism through the concept of the doppelgänger was fully ignored by the 2020 Academy Awards. With today's 2023 Oscars nominations, history has unfortunately repeated itself. "Nope,...

Fox Reality Channel has ordered a second season of its unscripted series The Academy.
The first season of the series took viewers behind the scenes for the first time to witness the grueling 18-week training process that recruits endure to become a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff. During the course, they are taught self-defense and weapon training, how to deal with aggressive assailants and the intricacies of gang warfare, a process that ultimately tests the recruits' endurance. In the second season, tentatively titled The Academy 2, the LASD staff will be back to train another class of recruits.
Scott Sternberg Prods. is returning to produce the series, with filming set to begin Nov. 12 on the recruits' first day of training -- aka Black Monday -- for a May premiere. Eleven hourlong episodes have been ordered.
"Scott and his team did a great job on the inside to bring the human stories to life, and we are happy to have them produce 'The Academy 2' with us," Fox Reality president David Lyle said.

Internet video network GoFish is launching its own version of a reality dating show on Thursday.
Dubbed "Seduce A Celeb", the 14-week online dating series featuring Lindsey Knickerbocker and Ashley Zarlin from the Bravo series' The Real Housewives of Orange County interacting with contestants through online videos in separate 7-week installments.
Scott Sternberg (The Academy) is executive producer of Seduce, his first online venture. The series is hosted by Andrew Firestone of ABC's The Bachelor, will begin with online users narrowing down the field of contestants.
From there, Knickerbocker and Zarlin will ultimately determine which chosen suitor will be granted a date with each of them by analyzing video responses to their posed questions.
"Empowering audiences to create and interact on such an intimate level with one another and with celebrities is a concept that reinvents the dating show format," Sternberg said. "It's incredible what technological innovations are doing to traditional media concepts, and I'm thrilled to be working with GoFish on this next-generation entertainment."
While Sternberg's credits include game shows Hollywood Squares and Love Connection, he is currently producing Hey Paula with Paula Abdul for Bravo.
