Elle's powerful aftermath
TheLittleSongbird18 January 2017
There are better episodes in Season 2 of 'Criminal Minds', such as "Profiler, Profiled", "Revelations", "North Mammon" and "The Boogeyman". This said, "Aftermath" is better than "Honor Among Thieves", somewhat of the odd one part in one of the show's strongest and most consistent seasons.

"Aftermath" is a good, sometimes very good, episode, but falls short of great. It does get credit for dealing with Elle's PTSD powerfully, boasting one of what is easily Lola Glaudini's better acting performances of the character (usually am indifferent to her but her performance here had raw intensity and a degree of poignancy) and for not making Elle cold or annoying.

It, as always with 'Criminal Minds', is a very well-made episode, very stylishly photographed and atmospherically lit. The music is moody and haunting, while the direction allows the action to remain taut. The script is very thought-provoking, with standouts being the lovely scene between Reid and Elle (have always liked those two together) and Morgan's "It's a work call" which brought some welcome and thankfully not misplaced humorous levity to a grim case.

Much of the story is very absorbing, it does start off like an ordinary rape case but piles on the tension before exploding towards the end, which one really does not see coming and it leaves one in complete and utter shock. The acting is excellent from all the regulars (Glaudini really nails it here in a way that she didn't previously) and the criminal is suitably repellent, one that one really wants to see done to justice.

Where "Aftermath" is let is in some strange credibility issues (pretty basic too), especially the BAU's sloppy investigation of the incident (or what felt like lack of it), them not noticing how bad her behaviour had gotten when so many tell-tale signs were there and putting her in a bait situation that she should never have been put in in the first place.

Overall though, a pretty good episode. A lesser Season 2 episode and would have been better without those issues but a lot is done right too, and the episode achieves a couple of things that I honestly thought was never going to happen (saying this as a fan too). 7/10 Bethany Cox

This is one of criminal minds best episodes especially when Elle did her thing at the end. Love her for realzy. Ok I have to write sommore, what can I say other than criminal minds is never too old or too redundant. Its a show that has great episodes, ok? ALNICA777, Elle is a strong woman who can't and won't allow an unsub to go free.

Whoa did that take a turn

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

So I liked the beginning of this episode but hated the ending. I do have to preface this review with the fact that I don't like Elle but this episode was just not fair to her. I understand that she has PTSD but in other episodes they have shown that she is smarter than what she did at the end of this episode.

I thought the whole investigation was rather cut and dry and may be a little bland but nonetheless still pretty interesting.

I think Elle panicking and attacking the rapist was not a bad writing decision because that accurately shows how she can't trust her team anymore but having her shoot him is a completely different thing.

That being said it does leave me very torn about how to feel about her character since clearly she did the thing we all wanted to do to the guy at the end but she went against her whole team and lied to fellow officers to get away with it which isnt ok.

I'm interested to see where this side of her character will go. I'm pretty sure she'll get kicked off the show because I know spoilers but I'm excited to see what they do in the next few episodes

This is the reason

Warning: Spoilers
I love this show, most of the time. This episode is the first step in the first instance that this series turns over too many main characters. Such a lame way to do it too.

Another fault in the show is the apparent disrespect for strong women characters. That didn't start here. It started almost from the beginning. Elle could have had huge potential, but they never gave her a chance. For instance the train episode could easily have showcased Elle, but instead she was more a victim and Reid was featured. Elle became a victim again in the season 1 finale and as season 2 progressed her status as victim was cemented. It didn't help that In almost every episode of this season Elle was dressed in noticeably tight shirts. In short, the show runners marginalized and disrespected Elle as they orchestrated her departure.

I never considered Elle one of my favorites, but I dislike this first of too many character departures.

Elle

Warning: Spoilers
I understand that Elle has ptsd because she got shot. I don't understand why she feels she can't trust her team. I never really liked Elle. I don't think she "panicked" before confronting the unsub. Elle just thinks rules don't apply to her, and then she blames others for the unsub being released. She's the one who screwed up.

Total Nonsense

Like, there is a 7.7% chance that Gideon will display a human emotion during this episode.

Reid: the new glasses don't make you look any older, dude.

Did you know? Cool people refer to Dayton, Ohio as: Day-O.

At 01:55- Hollywood cliche #038: never turn on the lights; what you can't see won't hurt you.

Isn't Elle and Keller that comedy team?

Wouldn't you think that by this time every law enforcement agency in the world would have the exact same series of questions to ask a crime victim?

We think it's Reid. He's obviously got sexual issues and he knows a lot about crime stuff, right?

Oh, wow! Somebody should, like, come up with a crime show about a guy named Dexter!

That girl doesn't have any experience with boys but she just loves her cucumber sandwiches.

A show of hands, please: how many of you have ever left your eyeglasses in the car? One...two. That's it? Just two of you.

You know, Gideon, a person who steals hotel bathrobes is only one step away from becoming a serial murderer. Ask Reid.

We're thinking that Elle has a major dark side to her.

Fifteen minutes in so it's time for the "clearly spontaneous" round robin briefing. You know: if the team used printed handouts they could crowd in another commercial or two.

We think it's the gas meter guy. Everybody knows the gas meter is behind the refrigerator not behind the gas range.

Wait, what!? Is it the gas meter guy or a secretary, Derek? Oh, I know! It's neither one you sneaky guy. So, like, it's the kid who does the lawn.

Snarky mom. She did it. No, wait. How would that even work?

Leave the suicide note in the junk mail drawer.

After consulting with our religious pizza delivery guy we feel that two murders is one sin more than one murder. Right?

We think it's that sperm donor guy at the clinic. If you had to donate sperm all day long it wouldn't mess with your head?

Have a discussion in the lobby about how patients are being murdered. Think much?

Why would a fertility clinic questionnaire want to know a patient's favorite vacation spot? Or their favorite music, books, movies and booze?

Why Elle? Oh, and you geniuses forgot to have her wear a wedding band. And you forgot about two way communications. And you forget that she could carry a small concealed gun instead of that big cannon. And maybe have a second agent inside the house?

Like, there's an ADT sign right next to the front door.

That black guy hanging out of the driver's side window of that big black van isn't suspicious? Nope. Not in the least.

Put your gun by the front door. Not like you're going to be needing it soon. Having it under a sofa cushion would be tacky, right?

Not the type of faucet to drink from, Elle. Try using a glass.

At 34:56- Hollywood cliche #169: obviously fake typing.

Elle should be in the unemployment line right behind Garcia.
