The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Movie Says: A family moves into a home that had been the site of a grisly mass murder, and soon realize the house is incredibly haunted. The movie is based on the bestselling 'non-fiction' book.
In Real Life: After the previous inhabitants of a certain Amityville house were murdered, the Lutz family moved in – though they were worried about making the mortgage payments on the $80,000 home (just under half a million dollars today).
The idea of writing a book about the house being 'haunted' post-murder was actually proposed by the killer's lawyer, who thought it would make a pile of cash.
Long story short: the book got published and sold 11 million copies, the Lutzes got rich off of their lie, and nobody else who lived in the house ever experienced paranormal activity. So 'The Amityville Horror' isn't based on a true story so much...

To understand "Left Behind," one must understand a version of Christianity not widely practiced by many people outside certain pockets of the United States. In some American Evangelical churches, they preach of the coming Rapture, when all of the Christians on Earth -- including the dead ones -- will be bodily scooped up by God and transported into Heaven. The idea of a Rapture is taken from an interpretation from the Book of Thessalonians which didn't enter into the Christian lexicon until about the 1830s, making it a very recent development. When Evangelical churches began to become popular in the United States in the 1950s, a stripe of fundamentalist theology began embracing the Rapture as a prophecy that was almost immediately nigh.
On December 31, 1995, Baptist minister Jim Lahaye and author Jerry B. Jenkins published the Rapture-themed book "Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days" to much ballyhoo. "Left Behind...

Last year, Sandra Bullock lost her partner of eight years, Bryan Randall, to Als after a three-year-long battle. Said to have been soulmates by her close friends, it’s safe to say that the loss of Randall took a heavy toll on the actress. For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Plot: Based on a remarkable true story, centers on Sharon, a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky who discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets Ed, a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels.
Review: When I first saw the trailer for Ordinary Angels, I wrote it off without a second thought as another faith-based drama designed to tug at the heartstrings and reinforce the unlimited power of God. In recent years, there has been a surge in movies like this; few have risen above the minimal viable bar for them to be considered watchable by mainstream audiences. The current Oscars crop might be the best list in ages – but which was the best ever year for the movies? Guardian writers present their case
2In three weeks’ time, the credits will roll on the best cinema season in recent memory. Ten films are up for the best picture Oscar on 10 March and not a dud among them. That is unusual. Usually you will find an Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in there somewhere. Or maybe more than one, or even a trio. Often, it’s hard to get jazzed by the awards race; sometimes it’s tricky to feel strongly about any of the big contenders.
This year is different. Not only is the quality elevated; audience engagement has been sky-high. Much of that is down to the Barbenheimer juggernaut, giving brainy blockbusters their post-Covid event movie moment. But the watercooler would have been noisy nonetheless: The Zone of Interest,...

BAFTA threw up plenty of surprises and snobs in their nominations lineups this year with Best Actress one of the most intriguing and head-scratching categories of the year. “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone was snubbed while Annette Bening (“Nyad”) also didn’t make the cut. Both of those performers were nominated at the Oscars, however.
Instead, the BAFTA nominees for Best Actress are Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), and Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”). Stone is the obvious frontrunner and the thespian at the top of our BAFTA odds chart for this category but one name in that list sticks out as a potential challenger: Oparah.

Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress last year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a dazzling fictional tale of a woman trying to save the multiverse. However, when we think of typical Best Actress winners, we do think of performers portraying real-life people. Sally Field in “Norma Rae” comes to mind, so, too, do Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich,” Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side,” and Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady.”
But is this an old-fashioned way of thinking? Or is it still a relevant metric with which to measure to potential Best Actress winners. Lily Gladstone portrays a real person in “Killers of the Flower Moon” but Emma Stone is the Oscar favorite for “Poor Things,” in which she plays a fictional character. So, let’s take a look a closer look at this category and what sort of roles Best Actress winners typically win for. Below is a...

Former football star Michael Oher tried to extort $15 million from Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the couple said in a new court filing.
The Tuohys raised Oher and his story was the basis for the film The Blind Side, which generated $330 million at the box office in 2009 and has continued to earn revenue over the years.
Oher claims the Tuohys received millions for the film while he hadn’t received a single payment initially.
He filed a lawsuit on August 14 against the Tuohys because instead of adopting him, as they said they would, they established a conservatorship and kept millions of dollars from him.
The Tuohy and Alcon Entertainment, the film’s producer, disputed the claim and said that the only way for Oher to attend the University of Mississippi and play football was through the conservatorship.
On the court papers, the Tuohys claimed that the “conservatorship was the tool chosen to accomplish this goal.

Everyone loves a real-life triumph story. The perseverance of the human spirit to overcome any obstacle put in its way. Someone put in a bad situation but they push themselves past it and accomplish their dreams. Yes. We all want it. It makes our hearts go pitter-patter. Whether we like to admit it or not we drop a few tears in the darkness of the movie theater and feel a little lighter as we walk out the doors back into our real lives. One story that had people in amazement was the story of Michael Oher. A young child who was left to his own survival would be taken in by Sean and Leigh Ann Tuohy who pushed him to get his life on track and helped him achieve the impossible and eventually become not only a college graduate but a highly paid NFL football player.

Michael Oher – the former NFL tackle whose story was the subject of the Oscar-winning The Blind Side – has apparently demanded Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy pony up $15 million in royalties from the movie after they allegedly exploited his life. And if they don’t, he’ll go right to the place where this sort of story flourishes: TMZ.
As per TMZ – who has obtained legal documents over the strife between Oher and the Tuohy family – the former football player would claim that the Tuohy family “robbed [him] of fifty million+”, although he significantly lowered the number to $10 million as the case progressed. After Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy rebuffed that number, he upped it to $15 million after taxes. Oher has allegedly continued his threats. Micahel Oher demanded that Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy stop calling themselves his parents after the termination of his conservatorship in a new court filing.
Oher has filed a motion to prevent the Tuohy’s from profiting off his name, image and likeness alongside claims that the Tuohy’s adopted Oher or are their adopted parents.
In court documents, which were filed on November 14 in the probate court of Shelby County, Tennessee, Oher claims that the Tuohys are continuing to “perpetuate false claims that they adopted him” and continuing with “book events” as Oher’s parents without his consent.
The filing was cited in response to an event at Eastern State Florida College in which Leigh Anne was scheduled to be one of the guest speakers with the description of her being “the adoptive mother of NFL football star Oher.”

“The Blind Side” was an Oscar-winning, feel-good hit from the moment that it premiered in 2009. The Sandra Bullock-led film told the story of Super Bowl champion NFL lineman Michael Oher and how his difficult childhood led to his being adopted by the Tuohy family who helped him become a high school football star, before heading off to college at Ole Miss. However, recently, Oher himself has leveled damaging accusations at the Tuohy family, claiming that they never adopted him, but instead had him placed in a conservatorship and used that to take money that rightfully should belong to him. In the latest CNN FlashDoc, ‘Blindsided,” journalists explore all sides of the story to get down to the bottom of what actually happened to this fractured family. After his name first graced the big screen in the The Blind Side, the real story of Michael Oher is told in the new documentary Blindsided, which has just debuted its first trailer ahead of its November 16th premiere.
When The Blind Side first premiered in 2009, it earned more than $300 million at the box office, nabbed Sandra Bullock an Oscar, and became one of history’s most successful sports films. Its plot centered around Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy couple who adopt a foster child and help him become an NFL champion. It claimed to be based on a true story, one with an undoubtedly happy ending.
Then, in August 2023, Michael Oher filed a lawsuit against the Tuohys saying they actually never adopted him. Instead, he claimed his new “parents” created a conservatorship that granted them legal authority to make business deals in his name, subsequently raking in...

Carey Mulligan has had an impressive and varied acting career, as shown throughout her awards resume in films like “Shame,” “Drive,” “Mudbound” and “She Said.” But her two leading Oscar nominations came for “An Education” (2009), her first major starring role, and “Promising Young Woman” (2020), in one of the most uncertain and thrilling Best Actress races in a while. Let’s take a look back at those years as she returns with her next project “Maestro” as Felicia Montealegre, the wife of composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein, set to release November 22 before debuting on Netflix December 20.
After a variety of roles in film, television and theater, Mulligan came to light at the Academy Awards with her first leading feature, the coming-of-age drama “An Education,” directed by Lone Scherfig and adapted by Nick Hornby from the Lynn Barber memoir, about a promising young schoolgirl who falls in love with a much older man...

A Tennessee judge has terminated the conservatorship of Michael Oher, a retired NFL player whose life story was chronicled in The Blind Side, under the Memphis couple at the center of the movie who allegedly took financial advantage of him.
Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes on Friday ended the agreement reached in 2004 when Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy allegedly tricked Oher into signing documents that appointed them as his conservators rather than his adoptive parents. Under the conservatorship, Oher claimed, he has been deprived of the rights to his name, image and likeness on top of millions of dollars the family got for signing away the rights to the book the film is based on.
This includes a deal with 20th Century Studios giving the Tuohys and their two children $225,000 and 2.5 percent of all future net proceeds from the movie, which has grossed over $300 million, according to a court petition.

The conservatorship between former NFL tackle Michael Oher and Leigh Ann and Sean Tuohy – subjects of the 2009 Oscar-winning film The Blind Side – has ended. While this is just one move in the right direction for Michael Oher, the judge did not dismiss the case itself.
The case itself stems from Michael Oher claiming that the Tuohy family tricked him into signing paperwork that made Leigh Ann and Sean conservators, even though he says he was led to believe he would be legally adopted by the couple. Adding to this, Oher alleges that the Tuohys used this status as a way to ensure he could not be properly financially compensated for The Blind Side.
At the time, the filing stated, “Michael Oher discovered this lie to his chagrin and embarrassment in February of 2023, when he learned that the Conservatorship to which he consented on the basis that doing so would make...

Ties have officially been cut between Michael Oher and the Tuohys. A Tennessee judge Friday ended the conservatorship that previously allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to control the finances for the former NFL player, according to AP.
In his petition to the court, Oher alleged the couple tricked him into a conservatorship to secure legal authority over business deals in his name, depriving him of profits from the film The Blind Side while mischaracterizing the true nature of their relationship. Oher signed the agreement when he was 18 and living with the couple as he was being recruited by colleges.
Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes said she was not dismissing the case. Oher has asked the Tuohys to provide a financial accounting of money that may have come to them as part of the agreement. He alleged the Tuohys used his name, image and likeness to make money...

The conservatorship former NFL player and The Blind Side subject Michael Oher was entered into nearly 20 years ago by Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy has been terminated by a Memphis judge, the New York Times reported.
In August, the 37-year-old filed a petition seeking to end the conservatorship. In it, he claimed that he learned only in Feb. 2023 that the Tuohy family were never his actual parents, only his conservators with legal authority over his business deals. The conservatorship began in 2005, four months after he turned 18.

People confirmed that Judge Kathleen Gomes announced that she would be freeing the athlete from the conservatorship. This will effectively give him back control of his finances, which the Tuohy’s assumed when he signed the paperwork.
In his initial filing, Michael alleged that he was tricked into the conservatorship and had not received royalties for The Blind Side.
Sean responded, denying the latter claim. The family’s lawyer also alleged that Michael threatened to leak unflattering stories to the press.

A Tennessee judge said Friday she is ending a conservatorship agreement between former NFL player Michael Oher and a Memphis couple who took him in when he was in high school, but the highly-publicized dispute over financial issues will continue.
Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes said she is terminating the agreement reached in 2004 that allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to control Oher’s finances. Oher signed the agreement when he was 18 and living with the couple as he was being recruited by colleges as a star high school football player. Why is the retired NFL player Michael Oher bringing a lawsuit against the family who took him in as a teenager? Andrew Lawrence reports
When Andrew Lawrence, now of the Guardian US, interviewed the American football player Michael Oher in 2009, Oher was already uncomfortable about how his life story was being portrayed to the public. This was shortly before The Blind Side was released, and Lawrence says the film “threatened to blow up those uncomfortable elements one hundred fold”.
The Oscar-winning film, starring Sandra Bullock, tells the story of Oher’s rise to the NFL with the support of the Tuohy family, who took him in when he was 17.

Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy claim in new court docs that they referred to the NFL alum as a ‘son’ in the ‘colloquial sense.’
Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy have filed a response to Michael Oher‘s lawsuit. In the new legal documents, which Et obtained, the Tuohys deny Michael’s claim that they lied about adopting him and tricked him into making them his conservators in order to profit off of his story.
Rather, in the Tuohys’ response, the couple claims “they never intended to, and in fact never did, take any assumed legal custody” of Michael when they took him in as a teenager. Further, they “vehemently deny” that they told Michael “that they intended to legally adopt him.”
Even so, the Tuohys admit that they “occasionally referred to [Michael] as a son” and have “always felt [he] was like a son.” However, the Tuohys alleged that the word...

Animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often, animated movies are some of the most original, memorable, and well-told stories of the entire year yet they are, more often than not, confined to the category of Best Animated Picture.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” “Fantasia,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “Wall-e,” “Shrek,” and last year’s Best Animated Picture winner, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” are just a handful of all-time classic movies that aren’t great animated movies, they are great movies period. Despite this, however, we have only had three animated movies in Oscars history that have been nominated for Best Picture.
“Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated movie to do so, landing a Best Picture bid in 1991. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, “Beauty and the Beast...

As of this writing, based on the combined Oscar predictions of Gold Derby users, Fantasia Barrino is the front-runner to win Best Actress with 9/2 odds for playing Celie in “The Color Purple.” Currently in seventh place with 11/1 odds is Annette Bening for “Nyad.” Bening is long overdue for her first win. So could this be similar to 1985 when another overdue veteran beat an actress playing Celie in “The Color Purple?”
In “The Color Purple,” Barrino plays Celie Harris Johnson, an African-American woman struggling to live in the South during the early 1900s. In “Nyad,” Bening plays Diana Nyad, a real-life swimmer who, at age 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach (Jodie Foster), commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.

The producers behind the Academy Award-winning movie The Blind Side have published a detailed statement addressing a legal filing by former NFL player Michael Oher, whom the film depicts.
Oher’s lawsuit against Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy has questioned the movie’s accuracy. In a legal petition against the Tuohy’s, Oher claims that the couple lied about adopting him and that the two manipulated him at 18 into naming them his conservators. Oher also alleges that he didn’t get any of the box office profits that the Tuohy family received.
Blind Side producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are now defending the film as accurate.
“The Blind Side is verifiably authentic and will never be a lie or fake, regardless of the familial ups and downs that have occurred subsequent to the film. We are as proud of the film today as we were when our amazing collaborators made the movie 14 years ago,...

Who would have thought 2009’s The Blind Side would be tied to one of the strangest entertainment stories of 2023? Earlier this month, former pro football player Michel Oher launched a lawsuit that claims Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy exploited the story to profit millions of dollars without cutting Oher himself in. Now, producers on the Oscar-winning movie have chimed in, saying that it remains “authentic” despite what has and will come out during the legal battle.

Producers behind “The Blind Side” have issued a statement affirming the authenticity of Michael Oher’s story as told in the film, responding to Oher’s recent allegations that the Tuohy family fabricated his adoption and instead placed him in a conservatorship that he is still restricted to.

Alcon Entertainment, the company that produced The Blind Side, broke its silence Thursday after more than a week of the movie generating headlines as the subjects of the film traded accusations of ill-intentions and shakedowns. In a lawsuit filed Aug. 14, former NFL star and Blind Side subject Michael Oher said he was cheated out of profits for the film by the family at its center. But Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy have said they split profits from the movie with Oher and accused him of a $15 million “shakedown.”
Now Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-heads of Alcon, are defending their Oscar hit, released in 2009, calling the accusations that the film’s true story was fabricated “mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions.” They also released an accounting of payments made in relation to the life rights to the project. (The deal was initially made at Fox, but Alcon inherited it when the company acquired the film.

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-founders of The Blind Side financier Alcon Entertainment, who also served as producers for the supposedly true-life family drama, have addressed controversy stemming from a recent lawsuit filed by pic’s subject Michael Oher, claiming there have been “many mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions” put out about the situation, and that the film they made is “as true today as it was 14 years ago.”
“The Blind Side is verifiably authentic and will never be a lie or fake,” the pair stated, “regardless of the familial ups and downs that have occurred subsequent to the film.”

Michael Oher has been keeping his lawyers busy, with People reporting on a new legal filing this week claiming that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy had not shared any financial information with him in nearly two decades, with Oher alleging he “has been kept in the dark” the whole time.
Oher sued his puportedly adoptive parents — whose story was dramatized in 2009 Oscar winner “The Blind Side” — last week, alleging they never actually adopted him, but instead tricked him into signing a document placing him into a conservatorship. He’s asking that conservatorship, which began when he was 18, be ended.
In his new filing, the retired NFL player is seeking an accounting of his finances in order to determine how much money they’ve made from his name, giving the Tuohys a two-week deadline to comply.
