Swirling Violent Winds
AaronCapenBanner25 September 2014
Fine weather related episode this time tackles the subject of tornadoes, and how they can pop up anywhere at any time, with little or no warning, and the efforts of both scientists and storm chasers to track and study these violent phenomena, and how humans can potentially better predict and prepare for them. Uses real footage of tornadoes to illustrate their power and destructive capabilities. This footage effectively tells the story as well as the narration, and one wonders if it may have influenced the creative minds that led to the successful film "Twister" from 1996, which would make a most exciting double feature if watched consecutively!

Warning: Spoilers
Okay nothing special here! One learns about what forms a tornado. Hot and cold fronts mix in at the right area of the U S A called tornado ally. Great tornado footage with 40 to 200 mile hour winds, with projectiles. The tornado tracking center with satellites, weather patterns staff, a jet to study pressure etc all work together to alert the public. There is tornado footage of the aftermath and destruction. Interviews with the public, and how towns deal with the twister. Nothing new here. Get more from tornado documentaries from school. If I was going to miss an episode this would be it!The narration and direction is by the numbers. Okay to watch. I seen better episodes. 5 out of 10 twisters.

In Search Of... "Tornadoes" (1978)

The second episode from season three seems like something that shouldn't be in this series. We take a look at some violent storms that hit Kansas and the destruction that the tornado left. We hear from people on the ground who survived the ordeal and then we hear from a group of scientists about what they're trying to do in order to give people more of a warning. Yeah, this really doesn't sound like something that should be covered in this series. I'm not sure why they decided to cover tornadoes but the episode is slightly entertaining for what it is. I'm sure fans of the series will be disappointed in the subject matter but it's not too bad.
