Director Renny Harlin recently shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies simultaneously, with The Strangers: Chapter 1 set to reach theatres on May 17th and The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3 possibly following by the end of the year… but those aren’t the only Renny Harlin horror movies we’ll be seeing this year. In fact, Vertical will be giving a Harlin-helmed horror movie called Refuge a VOD release this Friday, April 19th – and the trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above!

Daisy Ridley, known best as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, has had a pretty fascinating career outside of a galaxy far, far away. From narrating documentaries to failed YA sci-fi adaptations, she's certainly spread her wings. Later this year, Ridley will get the chance to lead a straight-up action flick called "Cleaner." It sounds like a riff on "Die Hard" from director Martin Campbell, who directed two of the greatest "James Bond" movies ever made. We may not even have a trailer yet, but it sounds very much like the film is going to live up to the promise of the talent involved.
The actor was on hand at this year's SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, to promote her new movie "Magpie." During a panel, Ridley got to talking about some of her more physically demanding roles as of late, including the upcoming Disney drama "Young Woman and the Sea.

The future of "Star Wars" is still a little murky but it is most certainly upon us. The last time the franchise graced the silver screen was back in 2019 when "The Rise of Skywalker" concluded the sequel trilogy. Though Lucasfilm has very much tried to move on in the years since, Daisy Ridley will be returning once again as Rey in a new, untitled film that will see her training a new generation of Jedi. Ridley may have already played Rey in a massively successful trilogy of films, but she's still nervous about returning as the character in the upcoming film.

Despite the popularity of Disney’s “Star Wars” franchise, Daisy Ridley says her career stalled when she finished her run leading the film trilogy with 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
“There weren’t that many offers coming in,” Ridley said during a Sunday panel at SXSW in Austin. “It’s not that there wasn’t any… I remember finishing and thinking, ‘Oh, it’s quiet and strange.'”
According to Ridley, she didn’t feel fully comfortable leading the latest “Star Wars” trilogy until she had reached the final movie, “The Rise of Skywalker.” “It took, honestly, making the third film till I felt like ‘Ok, I’m good. I deserve to be here,'” she said.
And then, after eight years of playing Rey, Ridley and the rest of the world went into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the entire film and TV industry shut down. During that time,...

Production has wrapped on Anton and Qwerty Films production Cleaner, starring Daisy Ridley, Clive Owen and Taz Skylar and directed by UK-based director Martin Campbell.
The action thriller is set-in present-day London. A group of radical activists take over an energy company’s annual gala, seizing 300 hostages in order to expose the corruption of the hosts. Their just cause is hijacked by an extremist within their ranks, who is ready to murder everyone in the building to send his anarchic message to the world. It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, played by Ridley (pictured), to save those trapped inside.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has found his next role in David Mackenzie’s heist thriller “Fuze,” which Anton will launch at the European Film Market in Berlin this month.
The film reunites Taylor-Johnson and “Hell or High Water” helmer Mackenzie, who last worked together on 2018’s “Outlaw King.” With a script from Ben Hopkins, “Fuze” “opens on the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in a London construction site, sparking a mass evacuation – the perfect cover for a heist,” according to the film’s synopsis.
Taylor-Johnson’s stacked project lineup currently includes the headlining role in Marvel’s “Kraven and the Hunter,” due out in August; “The Fall Guy” alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt; and Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated “Nosferatu.” Mackenzie’s 2016 neo-Western “Hell or High Water” scored four Oscar noms, including best picture, and he’s also set to direct “Relay” starring Lily James, Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington.

Daisy Ridley is having quite the year so far. Her new movie, Sometimes I Think About Dying, released in theaters earlier this month and is receiving positive notes. Her indie neo-noir movie Magpie is set to premiere at the SXSW film festival in March. The biopic Young Woman and the Sea, in which she stars as Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, was originally slated for a Disney+ release may instead get a bump up to theatrical. Oh, and she’s filming a new action-thriller called Cleaner directed by 007 franchise legend Martin Campbell.
In between all that, Ridley is also of course answering plenty of questions about her upcoming return to Star Wars. The actor recently teased that her solo movie, which is set 15 years after the Sequel Trilogy and will follow Rey as she works to build a new Jedi Order, is taking...

Daisy Ridley, best known as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, is getting the chance to shine as the star of her very own throwback action flick. What's more, she's working with the director of a couple of the best action movies of the last 30 years. Ridley is set to star as the lead in "Cleaner," which sounds very much like "Die Hard, but in London" with Martin Campell, of "Casino Royale" fame, in the director's chair. If I may? F*** yes.
According to Deadline, the action/thriller is being taken out to buyers at the Cannes Film Market, with plans to actually shoot the film in late summer. No word yet on who will be eyed to star alongside Ridley, but this marks one of her most flashy gigs since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" hit theaters in 2019. Frankly, it’s a surprise it took this long. Given that Die Hard launched an entire action sub-genre of ‘shootouts in tall buildings’, and that famous skyscrapers make for eye-catching locations to hook setpieces around, it was only a matter of time before someone made a movie set in, on, or around London’s jagged cloud-poker, The Shard. Now, it’s finally happening, it’s got Daisy Ridley_.
In tribute to the building itself, we’ll get to the point: Campbell’s film is titled Cleaner, and while that sounds like a biopic of 'When I'm Cleaning Windows' singer George Formby, it actually stars Ridley as ex-soldier turned window cleaner Joey who’ll battle a batch of eco-terrorists in present-day London, while simultaneously sticking it to the world’s most egregious corporate pollutants. Oh, and it’s largely set to take place 90 stories up in the air, on The Shard’s gleaming glass surface.

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

The BBC is investing an additional £10 million (12.3 million) in developing comedy.
Speaking at the BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle, U.K., on Wednesday, BBC director of comedy Jon Petrie also revealed that the broadcaster will double the number of half-hour pilots made.
BBC Comedy and BBC Sounds will co-commission up to four audio comedy pilots. BBC Comedy Short Films will launch in June, consolidating current short form strands to create a space for both new and established talent to experiment and develop new work. Existing writing grants are being expanded into the BBC Comedy Bursary Collective initiative, which will give emerging comedy directors and producers a place to hone their craft.
BBC also unveiled a revival, commissions and re-commissions. Jack Whitehall’s “Bad Education,” that ran for three seasons from 2012 through 2014, is being revived with a one-off 10th anniversary special, followed by a new six-part series written by a team of breakthrough writers.

Exclusive: The BBC has committed big to comedy by adding £10M (12M) to the genre’s budget over the next two years, as Director Jon Petrie talks up U.S. co-pros and unveils a new season of Jack Whitehall’s Bad Education, a Detectorists feature and recommissions of The Cleaner, Jerk and Guilt.
The extra cash is intended for “high-impact material that represents the whole of the UK” and will help with “rising costs,” according to Petrie, who described it as a “sizeable increase.”

Bam! Pow! Crack! That’s the sound of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/5.99) holding back the ascension of “The Batman” (Warner Bros./24.99) on two out of three PVOD charts.
“The Batman” debuted a week ago, but “Spider-Man” held on to the #1 spot at both iTunes and GooglePlay, with “The Batman” second at both. Those sites rank by number of transactions, irrespective of revenue. At Vudu, which calculates by money, not individual sales, “The Batman” ranks #1 for the week, with “Spider-Man” #3..
The well-timed price drop looks like a strategic play on Sony’s part. Price reduction is a normal part of VOD play, but it’s unusual when a film is still thriving as PVOD. Whatever the motive, the result prevents Warner Bros. from claiming a clear victory.
Even so: Spider-Man and Batman represent apples and oranges. Sony’s “Spider-Man” has no streaming outlet while “The Batman” also debuted last Monday on HBO Max.

For the National Association of Theater Owners, this is a long, dark drink of schadenfreude with a caffeine boost. Netflix, to a near-absurd degree, symbolized a nuclear threat to box office. However, this proves that while Netflix is a disruptor, it operates under the same laws of gravity that govern every other business.
However, to put this in perspective: It’s a dire prospect, losing more than 2 million users in six months — but that would represent one percent of the Netflix user base. For theaters, domestic gross for first quarter 2022 was 1.33 billion; the same period in 2019 grossed 2.44 billion. That’s a 45 percent drop and...

Marvel and D.C. Comics will never team their two biggest superheroes, but this week sees Spider-Man and Batman go head to head at home. “The Batman” (Warner Bros./29.99) is likely to displace “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/19.99) as the #1 title on PVOD charts next week.
“Spider-Man” is #1 again for the fifth week on all three charts we follow, an unprecedented achievement and one that “The Batman” will not repeat. It’s the top-grossing film of 2022, but at 365 million that’s less than half of Marvel’s 2021 monster hit. “The Batman” also has more competition, and not just from upcoming releases like “Uncharted” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Its biggest competition is itself: Warners announced last week that the film would debut on HBO Max April 18. That’s the same day it became available on PVOD, but Warners provided no promotion for its same-day availability.

When Marina Abramovic left Yugoslavia as a young artist in the 1970s, she could have hardly imagined what the years ahead would bring. Her homeland—a communist state ruled for nearly 40 years by Marshal Josip Broz Tito—would dissolve amid the geopolitical reshuffling of the post-Cold War era, while Abramovic herself would go on to become one of the most acclaimed, influential, and, at times, divisive artists on the planet.

Back in 2017 one of the pitches from the Frontières Co-Production Market that tickled my fancy was for a Dutch horror flick called The Cleaner. It was at the scripting stage at that point but the story about a construction worker who joins a company that cleans up after events with monsters. The promise of in camera practical effects was music to our ears. As the project progresses van Gorkum is preparing to shoot a short film version called Shiny New World. The short film introduces us to the feature film's central character Barry and will also serve as a proof of concept that production partners can look at. van Gorkum has enlisted the help of Dutch special effects team the Mad Scientists...

Disney Television Studios is expanding its casting executive team adding Kim Williams and Dylann Brander Gunning as VPs of Casting for Fox 21 Television Studios and ABC Studios, respectively.
“Kim and Dylann both have incredible instinct and taste, and I’ve been fortunate to have them work on several of our studio’s projects as independent casting directors. I’ve had my eye on them for years, and jumped at the opportunity to bring them into the Disney Television Studios fold as we build out our incredibly talented team,” said Evp Casting of Disney Television Studios and FX Entertainment, Sharon Klein.
Williams will report into Lindsey Kasabian, head of casting for Fox 21 Television Studios, and Gunning will report into Jonathan Bluman, head of casting for ABC Studios.
Williams joined ABC as director of casting in 2019, working on projects for the network, Disney+ and ABC Studios, including For Life, Baker and the Beauty and Single Parents.

For anyone that loved Cannon Films in the 1980’s and their shlocky, grotesque but strangely enjoyable fare, Millennium Films are still flying the Golan-Globus flag some three decades later. Many of those who worked for the charismatic Israeli cousins during that manic few years through such “classics” as Invasion USA, Missing in Action, Lifeforce and Over The Top, are now part of Millennium and while a lot of their properties share much of its DNA, there’s an air of quality control with the new gang.
Their latest 21st-century Cannon-esque outing is The Hitman’s Bodyguard, another run-of-the-mill action-comedy that has all the hallmarks of being a little bit of a stinker from the off. But it’s with great joy that we can shake off those fears and proclaim the film one of the year’s most ridiculous but unabashedly delightful romps with two stars at the top of their powers.

Finnish director Renny Harlin, the maker of Die Hard 2 and The Long Kiss Goodnight, has now decided to tackle one of the eeriest mysteries in Russian history. Here he explains why
'Oh, you'll have fun with Renny," says his assistant as I'm ushered into his office in Venice, Los Angeles, three blocks from where Orson Welles filmed the opening sequence of Touch of Evil. "He's been doing his homework on you."
My mind fills with horrifying possibilities, recalling how Don Simpson would have a journalist's credit rating, divorce papers, and even criminal record to hand for an interview. But Finland's most successful director simply appears before me with a grin and says: "Hello, John, I very much enjoyed your – " and he quotes something I wrote a month back. "I laughed all day!" he adds.
