At times Bosnia and Herzegovina has looked like it was stuck in a bit of a no-man’s land when it comes to film production, lacking the financial fire-power to press forward, but its TV series business is booming.
The Southeast European country boasts two Oscar nominations – Danis Tanović’s “No Man’s Land,” which nabbed a statuette in 2002, and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” which was nominated in 2021 – and its filmmakers have enjoyed success on the festival circuit, but it still hasn’t upped its meagre level of production, especially in terms of fiction features, with only one or two majority Bosnian films produced a year.
The problem lies in the “messy and unregulated model of audiovisual support in general,” according to producer-director Jasmin Duraković, whose film “The Glory of Unhappiness” screens in the Bh Film sidebar at Sarajevo Film Festival, which presents the recent crop of films with investment from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Surrogate begins with Rose (Taysha Farrugia) celebrating her ninth birthday before going to bed. She asks her mother Natalie if they can check for monsters. Natalie tells her there are no such things, which of course means the girl has more to worry about than a jump scare from her Uncle Will.
As she’s leaving the now-closed clinic she has an encounter with a woman who seems to be mentally ill. She encounters the woman again when she stops for gas, this time having to try and save her after she drinks bleach. After this she suddenly develops symptoms that resemble a pregnancy, even waking up bloody from the waist down as though she had given birth, but there’s no baby to be found.

Just when it looks like she could finally turn a corner, Betsy (Kaitlyn Dever) hits rock bottom in the seventh episode of Hulu’s “Dopesick.” Right before she’s set to accompany Dr. Samuel Finnix (Michael Keaton) to a clinic for her OxyContin addiction, she turns to drugs after receiving upsetting news. When Betsy tells her dealer to give her “one hell of a send-off” ahead of her potential recovery, you sense that she will never actually make it to the clinic. And so it is, as she tragically dies after overdosing on the injected heroin. It’s a devastating, unshakable conclusion to Betsy’s arc, meticulously executed by Dever, who deserves all the love from Emmy voters for putting a face on opioid addiction with great care and precision.

"I am the creation that MarineLand hoped to never create. I am their worst nightmare." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an activism documentary titled The Walrus and The Whistleblower, made by Canadian filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau. The doc won the Top Audience Award at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Canada. Part-time mailman and ex-trainer at MarineLand in Niagara Falls, Phil Demers (follow him @walruswhisperer) is a whistleblower who's sued for $1.5 million for plotting to steal a walrus, starting a personal quest against the backdrop to end marine mammal captivity. "The Walrus and the Whistleblower is a stranger-than fiction tale that plays out against the swell of a paradigm shift in our relationship with animals. At its heart are questions of compassion for others, humans and animals alike, the nuances of all our stories, and the hills we are willing to die on." I almost always enjoy these invigorating activism docs,...

Putting end to months of rumours and speculations, it has been confirmed that Korean auteur Park Chan-wook’s next project will be a melodrama starring Park Hae-il and Chinese actress Tang Wei (“Lust/Caution”).
Park was earlier rumoured to have been developing a “The Brigands of Battlecreek” for Amazon Studios off a S. Craig Zahler script as well as a remake of the Costa-Gavras film “Ax”, it will be this venture into the unchartered territories of the melodrama genre that will end up being his first film since he critically and commercially lauded “The Handmaiden” back in 2016.
The Korean title for the film translates as “The Decision to Break Up”. Of course, with Park being at the helm, one can expect the film to be rather dark and different to the usual Korean melodramas we know and love.

The Brad Pitt sci-fi blockbuster “Ad Astra” is set to take off in Chinese theaters Dec. 6, more than two months after its U.S. launch.
Directed, co-written and produced by James Gray, the thriller also stars Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland and Ruth Negga. Pitt plays an astronaut who goes off in search of his lost father, who manned an expedition 30 years previously and whose work may now be threatening the fate of the universe.
The movie was co-financed by China’s Bona Film Group, which holds Greater China rights. Bona was also the backer of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which also stars Pitt, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. “Once Upon a Time” was scheduled to hit Chinese theaters in late October, but its release was indefinitely postponed after Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon complained to Chinese authorities about her father’s portrayal in the film.

Some actors who win Oscars are cursed, drifting into obscurity after their moment in the spotlight. But other actors are cursed in a different way: despite appearing in Oscar-friendly work they somehow can’t manage to get back into the race. That’s true of Rachel Weisz, who won Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener” (2005), but hasn’t been nominated again in the 13 years since. However, it looks like this might be her “Favourite” year.
Weisz was a strong favorite throughout her “Constant Gardener” campaign, winning both the Golden Globe and the SAG Award on her way to the Oscar stage, and she has appeared in multiple Oscar-nominated films since then — “The Lovely Bones” (2009), “The Lobster” (2015) and “Youth” (2015) — in addition to other projects that seemed like they might appeal to awards voters like “The Whistleblower” (2010), “The Light Between Oceans” (2016) and “My Cousin Rachel” (2017), but none of those caught on with the academy.

Sitting between the early fall festivals of Toronto and Venice and November’s American Film Market, Busan’s Asian Film Market is either badly timed or brilliantly positioned, depending on your point of view.
There is no doubt, however, that it plays host to a range of hidden gems, and allows buyers to get an early jump on a selection of key titles – both of the artistic and the commercial varieties.
Hong Kong’s Mandarin Entertainment is handling the festival’s big-budget ($28 million production cost) closing film, “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy,” with its starry cast including Dave Bautista, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Jaa. The company is also pre-selling its even bigger “Ip Man 4.” The budget is now confirmed at $52 million and pitches Asian superstar Donnie Yen against British action star Scott Adkins with delivery scheduled in 2019.
Another Hong Kong studio, Edko Films, is touting $40 million China-Australia co-production “The Whistleblower.

In Outlast: Bundle of Terror, Switch owners are treated to perhaps one of the most terrifying first person horror experiences ever made, which is even more personal as the result of the way in which Switch games immerse players so deeply into the experience. That said, Outlast is almost five years old now and despite being released on next generation hardware, it is still visually impressive.
When I heard about its relatively surprising release on the Switch, I was curious about how Outlast would hold up both because of its age and due to the hardware on which it is being played. There have, of course, been many Xbox 360 and PS3 ports onto Nintendo’s excellent hybrid console, but not all of them have been entirely successful due to the way that the Switch manages and distributes its processing efforts.

Sorry, Dredd-heads, but it doesn’t look like director Pete Travis is waiting around in hopes of a green-light for a follow-up to his beloved but low-grossing 2012 comic-book adaptation. The helmer is now lining up kidnap thriller Snatchback, with Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz in the lead role.
Weisz (The Constant Gardener) will take on the role of Maureen Dabbagh, a real Virginia woman whose ex-husband kidnapped their two-year-old daughter and fled to the Middle East back in 1992. Dabbagh spent over 10 years tracking the pair across the volatile region before she finally got her daughter back.
In Snatchback, which Travis also scribed, the true story will get a rather Hollywood twist, with Dabbagh becoming a mercenary of sorts, embarking on dangerous missions to help other families to recover their kidnapped children from the Middle East while continuing her own search.
Weisz co-developed and will produce the project, which is currently...
