Calendar-wise, summer doesn't begin for another few weeks. As far as the TV business is concerned, though, summer began at 11:01 p.m. on Wednesday night, when the 2015-16 network TV season officially ended. The break used to be a little cleaner, but as cable and streaming outlets premiere shows year-round, and as the broadcast networks have become a bit less bound to the rules of the calendar, there's more overlap than ever before. HBO's dynamite Sunday lineup has another month to go, late spring broadcast premieres for shows like Person of Interest and Houdini & Doyle mean they have a few more weeks in them, and the next few months will see a mix of new and returning scripted material across every kind of TV provider there is in 2016. The next few days, weeks, and months will feature the return of some of the best shows on television, including UnREAL (Lifetime,...

I like to think that I righted a wrong this month, by deciding to tackle the review for the Xbox One port of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. After all, I’d heard a lot about the franchise but had never taken the time to experience it for myself. It was always something that I’d planned to get to in the future, but hadn’t. At least, not until now.
Released back in the latter part of 2014, for both Wii U and 3Ds, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse has since made its way to Steam and Amazon’s Fire TV service. Now, it’s about to enter into unfamiliar territory, on Microsoft’s Xbox One and (later) Sony’s PlayStation 4, with the hopes of gaining new audiences. Here’s hoping that will end up being the case, because this is one heck of a good game, which...

It appears that Shantae is shaping up to be the most badass chick to whip her hair back and forth since Sindel from the Mortal Kombat series (I bet you were expecting a Willow Smith reference). Aladdin-inspired art stylings coupled with quirky characters and anachronistic tanks all combine to make for one bizarre and hilarious cross-section of the upcoming Nintendo 3Ds platformer, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse.
The half-genie, recently rendered powerless, embarks on a new quest in this game. Squaring off against Risky’s former minions, events from the last game that caused her to lose her powers have now transferred those same powers to her enemies, as Shantae must reclaim the lost shards that contain her former powers. Of course, she can’t go at it alone, so who else but Risky has to team up with Shantae, as his former crew is plotting to resurrect the Pirate Master,...

After spending a good four days at this year's San Diego Comic-Convention (coverage of all the goings on here) getting up early, standing in line, sitting in line, sitting in the same chair for hours upon hours, and suffering through panels I had no interest in (I'm looking at you The Cleveland Show) just to get panels I was (hello True Blood!), I thought I had had enough of pop culture conventions. It was going to take another good year to build up my stamina to attend another. That is, until I read the following news: Reality TV is getting its own convention!!
Now, some of you may know that I write the Survivor recaps here at TVOvermind. What you may not know is that Survivor is just the tip of my Reality TV iceberg. The Amazing Race, Top Chef, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Project Runway, American Idol, Big Brother, So You Think You Can Dance...

The Producers Guild of America has announced the winner of its Norman Lear Award, a TV producers' award that in years past has gone to Lorne Michaels, Jerry Bruckheimer, Dick Wolf, and, last year, David Chase. And the 2009 winner, to be presented at a gala ceremony Jan. 24th is ... drumroll please ... Mark Burnett. It's a bit of a stretch to get worked up into a lather over the man who brought you Pirate Master, but there you have it. [The Wrap]...

A couple years ago, CBS aired a reality show called Pirate Master. The series' competition revolves around a group of regular people who sail on an old-style ship, take part in pirate-like challenges, and compete to win a million dollar treasure.
Pirate Master wasn't a ratings success and CBS pulled it off the air after eight episodes. The network made the remaining six episodes available online but, as so often happens, many on-air didn't know it. Many viewers were angered and never found out who won the booty and the title of Pirate Master. (For the record, it was the contestant pictured at right; Ben Fagan from Charleston, Sc.)
Now, long after the show was cancelled, creator Mark Burnett is being sued over the series. TMZ has reported that James Papa has filed a $2 million lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court against him.

Though Mark Burnett has produced shows as different as "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" and "On the Lot" and "Rock Star," his original credits were on the "Eco Challenge" franchise and many of his subsequent shows have been variations on that theme. "Survivor" is "Eco Challenge" for lazy, scheming people. "Pirate Master" was "Eco Challenge" with swashbucklers (and Christian Okoye). "The Apprentice" was "Eco Challenge" in the urban jungle. Now, Mark Burnett Productions is behind History Channel's "Expedition Africa: Stanley & Livingstone," which is "Eco Challenge" for intellectually curious viewers. Based on early episodes, "Expedition Africa" is more exciting...

It's been a disappointing summer for Mark Burnett's reality shows. Fox's much-hyped On the Lot filmmaking competition has been falling in the ratings since its debut and was cut back to a single hour long episodes per week. It looks like Lot will finish its run but Burnett's other new reality series isn't so lucky.
Pirate Master debuted on CBS on May 31st and attracted a lukewarm seven million viewers -- despite coinciding with the release of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film in theaters. Many feel that the series was highly derivative of Burnett's Survivor series and ratings have been steadily falling.
As a result, CBS has cancelled Pirate Master effective immediately. Five hours are left in the competition and the network plans to post a new episode online each Tuesday at CBS.com. The "news show" 48 Hours Mystery will fill in for tomorrow night. Stay tuned!
