Since this is one of the most outrageous movies I have ever watched, and I've read the interesting book it was based on - "Wild At Heart" by Barry Gifford - I most interested in hearing the cast, director and writer discuss this bizarre film.
The nice thing about this documentary is that all the major participants contribute. A lot of times, key people are missing from these "features" on the DVD. For instance, in the documentary about "Blue Velvet," director David Lynch is only seen in archival footage.
However, in this one Lynch is front-and-center, along with Nicholas Cage, Laura Dern and many of the actors and crew. Lynch comments about a number of things. For a mysterious guy whom, I've heard, doesn't like to do interviews, I was surprised how much he was in this behind-the-scenes feature.
I also was surprised he said Laura Dern "is the greatest actress I've ever worked with; one of the greatest actresses I've ever seen." He really had praise for both her and her mom, Diane Ladd, who also plays her mom in the movie. Both Laura and Diane comment quite a bit about this circumstance. How often do you see a real-life mother and daughter playing the same in the film? (Actually, the two of them have done it three times!) Listening to mom and daughter in this 30- minute reflection about the 1990 film just confirmed by suspicions: those two are whacked! I mean, would you have several nude sex scenes in a film where your mother is there watching?
Speaking of "whacked," how about the infamous "Bobby Peru?" This supporting character is guaranteed to be one you never forget once you've seen this film. Gifford says here that Willem Dafoe was the "perfect actor to play this role." Who could argue? Dafoe even remarks that with all the characters he's played over the years, he still gets as many comments about "Bobby Peru" as anyone else he ever played. He relates a quick story about the famous "teeth" he had to wear!
I sometimes forget just how insane this movie is but this feature reminded me as other characters tell about their unbelievable scenes, actors like Crispin Glover and Grace Zabriske. Glover played a guy who had cockroaches in his underpants. Zabriske had one scene that was so repulsive that in the screening, they figure 275 of the 400 people walked out of the theater immediately after the scene. Lynch thought it might be a good idea if he cut that scene!! Ya think?
