- Scott, Rand, and Annie make their way to a city, which Rand observes is in really bad shape. Scott blames it on the Invid, saying they aren't famous for picking up after themselves, but Rand says the people could have done better in cleaning up their city as well.
Meanwhile, inside a nightclub, Yellow Dancer, a lounge singer modeling her performance after Lynn Minmei, is performing. After she finishes one of her songs, a group of thugs stands up and criticizes her. Rook Bartley, a young woman who had helped Scott and Rand in the lost city, is sitting at one of the tables when the trouble starts. Rook openly challenges the thugs, and one of them lunges at her, only to be quickly subdued.
As Rook fights the thugs, Scott, Rand, and Annie enter. Rand wants to join the fight, but Scott holds him back, saying it looks like Rook can handle herself. When one of the thugs grabs Rook from behind, however, Scott and Rand join in. Scott pulls out his weapon, causing the thugs to run out. Rand tries to talk to Rook, but she walks out, asking why they had to butt in.
Yellow Dancer approaches Scott, Rand, and Annie to thank them for their help. Rand is smitten, and hands Yellow a handkerchief to ask for her autograph, saying it's for his kid sister. Not knowing who Yellow Dancer is, Scott asks who the thugs were. The club manager says they're just the usual riff-raff. Scott asks if they've asked the local authorities for help. The manager says the thugs *are* the local authorities.
Meanwhile, out in the streets the thugs go after Lunk, a burly ex-soldier, and his friend Kevin. They grab Kevin and ride off while Lunk runs toward the club. Seeing Scott again, the thugs turn around and leave, but before they do, they tell Lunk to come out to the ranch if he wants to see his friend again. Lunk is unwilling to go, but Scott asks the manager where the ranch is. He rides off, followed by Rook and Rand. Reluctantly, Lunk agrees to go. The manager offers them the use of his motorcycle. Finally, Yellow Dancer and Annie leave to join them.
Arriving at the ranch, the group is met by the thugs, who have Kevin tied to a tree. Rand asks Rook why she's there, as she doesn't have a stake in this. She says she has just as much reason to be there as him. Scott tells Rand not to use his proton cannon, as he doesn't want anyone getting hurt. Rand nods, though Rook says it'd be no great loss.
Rand notes that the standoff reminds him of a movie he saw, but can't remember the exact title. The thugs needle Lunk about making the first move, saying he has a history of running away, implying he deserted his post at some point while in the military.
As the verbal threats continue, the thugs begin to move, but an Invid attack quickly stops the fight and causes everyone to scatter. Scott changes his Cyclone into mechanized armor and goes after the Invid. Rand gets frustrated as he tries to change his Cyclone. Rook tells him to treat it gently and changes hers into mechanized armor. Taking her advice, Rand is finally able to get his Cyclone to transform and joins the fight, forcing the Invid to retreat.
Lunk asks Scott if he was a member of the space battalions. Scott says he was. Lunk asks him if he can fly a Veritech, and surprised, Scott follows him. Meanwhile, Rook needles Rand about being not much use. Rand says that technically, he's a noncombatant.
As Spider, another member of Lunk's gang, rescues Kevin, he tells Kevin that the rescue was Lunk's idea. Kevin doesn't believe him, but eventually admits that he may have been wrong.
Lunk leads Scott to a building where he's stored an Alpha fighter, saying it's ready to fly. Scott asks who's been maintaining it. Lunk says he's a certified bio-maintenance engineer - or at least he used to be. Scott climbs in, but when the Invid attack outside, he says he needs more time to power up. Rand and Rook arrive just in time to delay them enough for Scott to power up the jet and take off. Changing to battloid, Scott defeats the Invid patrol.
Kevin, Spider, Yellow Dancer, and Annie find Lunk. Annie embraces Lunk, but he says she's a little young for him. Lunk tells Kevin and Spider he's joining Scott's team, as he's a soldier and tired of hiding. Calling Lunk a big disappointment, Annie says she decided a long time ago never to marry a soldier.
Yellow Dancer says she's coming, too. Scott says this is no job for a cocktail lounge chorus girl. Yellow says there's a lot more to her than meets the eye, and in front of everyone removes her outfit to reveal a young male fighter named Lancer. Scott now has a new freedom fighter on his team, while Rand is crushed by the revelation.
