John Sturges’ orbital jeopardy thriller does everything right: the story is taken seriously, the actors seem committed and the special effects aren’t bad. Yet it’s more interesting for what doesn’t work than what does. As one of the first Sci-fi pictures in the wake of 2001 it wasn’t well received despite being technically astute. Did NASA’s race to the Moon put an end to fanciful space Sci-fi? Gregory Peck, Gene Hackman, Lee Grant and some ex- TV actors do their best, but producer Mike Frankovich’s space saga just sits there. It looks great in its first Blu-ray release: images of the actual Apollo 11 launch are breathtaking.

Let’s be honest: 2021 was one of the worst years Korean cinema had in recent times. One would’ve hoped that they would have built upon the brilliant couple years that 2019 ad 2020 were but sadly that wasn’t to be. The pandemic situation did not help, with many production houses deciding to pull scheduled releases, halting production or waiting on things to calm down before releasing some projects that have big money riding on them. Even on the indie cinema front, which actually thrived in 2021 due to the lack of mainstream releases, did not manage to impress with what little out there was.
Things however do seem to be on the up with this year, as a few postponed releases are finally getting rescheduled and seeing theatrical releases. New releases are also being talked about and promotional material for some long gestating projects is also being circulated. Without further ado,...

The joke of Netflix’s recent “Don’t Look Up” is that scientists discover a meteor headed straight for Earth, and even with six months to plan, humanity is too skeptical and disorganized to prevent it. Meanwhile, in Roland Emmerich’s latest eye-roller, “Moonfall,” the joke is pretty much flipped: Everybody’s favorite satellite is set to collide with Earth in, oh, a day or so, and that’s just enough time for two space jockeys to suit up, shuttle out and set things right.
I say “joke” because “Moonfall” is designed to elicit incredulous laughter as its ludicrous plot snowballs from a high-concept hypothetical question (what if the moon suddenly changed course and came crashing toward Earth?) to increasingly implausible complications on the theme, all while requiring Halle Berry, as NASA acting director Jocinda Fowl, to keep a straight face while saying things like “Everything we thought we knew about...

One of the most influential artists working in the medium of animation over the last half-century, Glen Keane brought his long-awaited debut feature to the screen just last fall. That film—the musical fantasy Over the Moon—certainly was worth the wait.
Bringing splendid life to both modern-day China and a fantastical realm known as Lunaria, Over the Moon centers on Fei Fei, a 14-year-old Chinese girl who has long been told the legend of the Moon goddess Chang’e. While struggling to cope with the loss of her mother, the teenager decides to journey into space to prove that the immortal being is real. Produced by Pearl Studio and Netflix Animation, from a script by the late Audrey Wells, the animated feature is the first distributed by a major Hollywood studio to center on an entirely Asian cast.

One of the greatest aspects of cinema, making it distinct from other media, is the fact it can capture time. While the Brothers Lumiere already emphasized this point with their first films showing the arrivals of trains at local stations, perhaps no one else has explained the relationship of time and cinema better than Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky in his masterful essay “Sculpting in Time”. Film, similar to photography, is capable of capturing a certain moment in time, but can also reproduce it as much as the viewer likes. Given this ability, we as the audience are able to re-live and contemplate on the moment, resulting in the possibility of film changing our way of thinking and our lives. While most certainly not every director follows these principles as highlighting the entertainment aspects of the medium is much more profitable, there are those who have managed to test and to...

The Disney+ series, The Right Stuff, is about trailblazers, but as a TV show, it stands in a crowd.
Shows about astronauts and space agencies seem to be back in vogue because For All Mankind, Space Force, Away, and Moonbase 8 made their debuts, too.
Mega franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars continue to boldly go and explore a galaxy far, far away.
And since the 1983 film version is beloved and iconic, the comparisons between the two were inevitable.
Yet, as I was watching The Right Stuff, I wasn't comparing it to any of those other shows or the film. What I kept being reminded of, and wanted to watch instead, was HBO's From The Earth To The Moon.
Produced by Ron Howard and Tom Hanks (who also directed and acted in it), From The Earth To The Moon was HBO's 1998 mini-series chronicling the U.S. space program from NASA's reaction...

South Korea, a hotbed of contemporary cultural fervor, is to get a significant new development and production company headed by veteran studio executives. The new venture, Covenant Pictures starts operations with solid financial backing, a diverse slate, and a first-look deal with the producers of the hit “Along With The Gods” movie franchise.
Covenant sees itself scouring Asia for IP that will be developed and produced as Korean-made films and TV series. Relationships in East Asia could cast the net wider, in future.

Lee has production and film finance experience managing over 90 titles while at Lotte, while Choi’s focus was on international affairs, acquisitions and marketing. At a time when climate change is ravaging Earth and real-life interest in space organizations from NASA to SpaceX has been renewed, there is no shortage of television shows delivering interesting and informative takes on such travel. But while series such as Disney Plus’ “The Right Stuff” goes for the nostalgia play and Netflix’s “Away” contemplates the sacrifice made to leave family behind, it is Nickelodeon’s “The Astronauts” that delivers the truly unique picture of unequipped, untrained children accidentally being launched into space, now thrust together as a makeshift team to survive.
“We are being presented — especially in 2020 with all that’s happened — with portraying a future as a hopeful thing. I think people are really hungry for that — ‘if we all set aside our differences and work together toward a common goal, then we have a very bright and hopeful future,'” “The Astronauts” showrunner Daniel Knauf tells Variety.

The family is living a happy life until the annual Moon Festival, her mother falls ill and eventually the happiness fades as her mother’s illness becomes worse. While Disney and Pixar are seen as the masters of cinematic animation, don’t sleep on Netflix. Last year saw them burst into the Best Animated Feature race at the Academy Awards, and this year, the streaming giant is again gunning for Oscar attention. This time around, their vehicle is Over the Moon, a colorful, musical progressive, and vibrant animated tale that is full of life. With memorable songs and an excellent message, the movie is likely to be a big hit with audiences who watch it this week. Can some awards love be far behind? The film is an animated musical adventure, centered on a young and her mix of an adventurous and scientific mind. Fei Fei (voice of Cathy Ang) is always thinking of her mother, especially while making moon cakes with her father (voice of John Cho). They have a lovely bond, but she misses her mom,...

The End, the British/Australian dark comedy drama starring The Crown and Succession star Harriet Walter and Mansfield Park’s Frances O’Connor, is heading to Showtime.
The ViacomCBS-owned network has acquired the 10-episode first season of the drama, which is produced by Top of the Lake producer See-Saw Films and was a co-production between Sky and Australia’s Foxtel. Endeavor Content handled the U.S. deal.
O’Connor plays Dr Kate Brennan, an Australian-based specialist in palliative care. Euthanasia is a hot-button topic in Kate’s field of work and she is passionate in her opposition. On the other side of the world, Kate’s mother Edie Henley, played by Walter, feels just as strongly about her right to die. Kate has little choice but to ship Edie out from England and deposit her in a nearby retirement village in the Gold Coast – Edie’s worst nightmare. While Kate struggles with her own problems,...

The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country.
The ending of Lovecraft Country’s second episode could have very well been the season finale, if not series finale, of many other shows. All in the span of two episodes’ time, our heroes Tic Freeman (Jonathan Majors), Leti Lewis (Jurnee Smollett), and George Freeman (Courtney B. Vance) meet their proverbial archvillians, learn of their plan, and ultimately dispatch them.
Tic even reaches a series finale level of catharsis by meeting the shade of his ancestor, Hannah, who assists him in defeating Samuel Braithwhite (Tony Goldwyn) and helps him find safe passage out of the crumbling Braithwhite Manor. In the process, George loses his life. The events of “Whitey’s on the Moon” are so enormous and consequential that it might have been hard to viewers of the show to imagine where it could possibly go next.
That question is answered definitively in episode 3 “Holy Ghost.

Episode two of HBO's Lovecraft Country features Gil Scott-Heron's "Whitey on the Moon" - in fact, the episode itself is titled "Whitey's on the Moon." While Lovecraft Country takes place in the '50s, Scott-Heron's spoken-word poem first came out in 1970, right after the moon landing. Given that the series is a blend of sci-fi monsters and the horrors of Jim Crow segregation, the song choice certainly makes sense. But what exactly is the history behind the song? Let's take a look at the song and how it fits into America's social context during this turbulent era.
Scott-Heron released his debut album, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, in 1970. Perhaps the most well-known track from the record is "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." On side two, Scott-Heron also made waves with "Whitey on the Moon." In the opening moments of the recording, Scott-Heron says that he was inspired...

The Svod service has ordered The House, which will be produced at Nexus Studios’ London unit. Nexus, which also has a studio in La, is behind Academy Award-nominated short This Way Up, the story of two undertakers trying to deliver a body to a graveyard from Alan Smith and Adam Foulkes, and Emmy-nominated Back to The Moon.
The project centers on a house and the surreal tales of three generations of families who made it their home.
Belgian creators Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels, whose recent film This Magnificent Cake! was an official selection at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, will direct one chapter; Swedish director and animator Niki Lindroth von Bahr, whose short film received top prizes at Annecy and the Toronto International Film Festival,...

Well, I recall a very spirited discussion between fans about which one of his approximately 1,400 films was the most twisted and...

50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly celebration of all that is good and right in the world. Mostly movie and television related stuff. A lot of love for Doctor Who and Game of Thrones, but also some things that you won’t see coming. Like Omar. Because Omar comin’, yo. We begin tonight with a snipped version of the new Magic Mike poster. Since our last edition of News After Dark was headlined by a bikini-clad supermodel, here’s a little something for the equally undersexed female masses that read this column. Hello, all three of you. Welcome. It’s important to take a moment this evening to congratulate Peter Sciretta at /Film on the 450th edition of Page 2, his ridiculously long running column cut from the same link-mongering cloth as the one you’re reading right now. The practice of the two columns may vary greatly, but...

From the second half of the twentieth century onward, our view of Nasa and its associated lore in movies have been inseparable. The astronaut, a uniquely American frontier hero whose myth and iconography made them the cowboy of the second half of the 20th century, has a position in our cultural memory that is inseparable from cinematic imagination. From pre-moon landing science fiction that dreamed of potential encounters with distant worlds through an organized space program (Planet of the Apes, 2001: A Space Odyssey) to reenactments of history celebrating the space program and the individuals involved (The Right Stuff, Apollo 13) to Nasa/moon landing documentaries (For All Mankind, In the Shadow of the Moon) to later, more divergent science-fiction films that have emerged since the prominence of Nasa has lessened (Armageddon and so on), Nasa, space exploration, the moon landing, and its imagined associations have retained a prominent place in cinematic mythmaking prompted by continued fascination...

Films such as Inside Job and Super Size Me are compelling but preach to the converted. What happens when the lights go up?
As the credits roll on The Flaw, a new documentary on the financial crisis, and we learn the fates of the various interviewees, it's Andrew Luan, a former mortgage bond trader for Deutsche Bank, who has emerged from the meltdown best. Now a guide who provides walking tours (and handy narrative threads for documentary filmmakers) through post-credit crunch Wall Street, his business has been on the up since 2008. The Flaw – from In the Shadow of the Moon director David Sington – joins Inside Job and Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story in cinema's growing oeuvre of rueful postmortems on the global financial system. But watching them, I sometimes wonder if their function is just like Luan's Wall Street walkabout: vicariously entertaining us with the spectacle of our own decline.

Here Christopher Riley describes the making of First Orbit, which uses footage shot from the International Space Station and original mission audio to recreate Yuri Gagarin's historic first space flight
• Read an interview with Yuri Gagarin's daughter

There comes a time in the history of a planet when any technologically advanced life forms that have evolved on its surface decide to send one of their species into space. Planet Earth had to wait over 4.6bn years for this moment, and when it came 50 years ago there were no cameras on board the spacecraft to capture for posterity the first spaceman's view of his home.
Rather than being an oversight, this probably had more to do with the fact that filming technology had been left behind by our sudden leap into the Space Age, and there simply wasn't enought room inside the cramped Vostok 1 capsule for Yuri Gagarin to wield a primitive,...

Six years ago at the age of 18, Stephen Slater followed events as they unfolded a billion miles away on another world. His documentary about the Huygens mission, Destination Titan, will be broadcast on Sunday at 10pm on BBC Four
It was a slow news day on Planet Earth. That morning, column inches in the papers had mainly been torn between such trivialities as the impending split of pop boy band Busted, and the furore over Prince Harry's decision to wear a Nazi costume to a fancy dress party.
Meanwhile, a billion miles away in space, something extraordinary was about to happen that would have a profound effect on the next six years of my life.
The date was 14 January 2005. Less than a week had passed since my 18th birthday, but I'd been a self-confessed space geek for many years, having grown up on a diet of books and films about the planets.

Exclusive: New Video has made the latest Sundance film deal, acquiring the David Sington-directed financial crisis documentary The Flaw. New Video plans a limited theatrical run and then release on DVD, VOD and digital platforms. Sington's documentary tackles the financial meltdown, and gets its title from U.S. Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's acknowledgment that he'd discovered a flaw in his model of how the world worked. Sington, the British filmmaker who previously made In the Shadow of the Moon, breaks down in detail the reasons behind the 2008 crisis, from credit default swaps to greed and avarice. The film was produced by Christopher Hird (The End of the Line), Luke Johnson and Stephen Lambert of Studio Lambert. The film debuted last Friday. "The Flaw delves into one of society's most pressing concerns with precision and intelligence," New Video acquisitions president Mark Kashden said. "We wanted to be sure David's...

Grab ‘Em Right Away:
Nothing. Save your money for that rainy day coming soon.
Check it out:
The Good Heart
Directed by: Dagur Kári
Written by: Dagur Kári
Starring: Brian Cox & Paul Dano
Why should you rent this movie? Because no matter how you look at it there are still two phenomenal performances in this movie. Brian Cox and Paul Dano are pitch perfect. Cox plays the asshole bartender who hates everyone and everything – except his bar – so much that, well, eventually you end up loving him; and you love him even more when you see him begin to like Lucas (Paul Dano) and show his more vulnerable side. It’s the perfect 90 minute heart-to-heart (yes I just did that) film that you’ll like to sit...

Heading to DVD and Blu-ray this week we have a movie that squandered some great comedic potential, a couple of documentaries about fascinating and eccentric people, and a long lost show featuring a computer generated TV personality. Shawn Levy's Date Night didn't take full advantage of a Steve Carell and Tina Fey team-up, but it's still probably worth at least a rental; other comedies out this week include the Death at a Funeral remake, The Joneses starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, and the first two National Lampoon's Vacation movies on Blu-ray. Last year, Disney released the film "Earth" to coincide with Earth Day. The film takes the viewer on journey of the Earth, focusing on how the plants and animals respond to seasonal changes throughout the year.

Frank Skinner's Opinionated, 30 Rock, Charlie Brooker and the UK bow for The Prisoner lead this week's TV highlights. Plus lots of movies too...
Frequenters of the site will be aware that we're friends of the comedians and often voice our appreciation of anything that can give us a giggle. News and current events usually don't. So, we welcome the arrival of Frank Skinner's Opinionated tonight, Friday, April 16th at 10:00pm on BBC2, a show that brings guest comedians to studio audiences around the country to talk about topical stuff. We're of the mind that if you can't laugh, you'd often cry at today's goings on, so any help in that area is promptly ticked on our telly timetables.
On Saturday, April 17th, a show that is perhaps unwise to be shown in pubs will air at 9:30pm on ITV. We say that as it's the reimagining of The Prisoner,...

Director Miguel Arteta would like to be known as the man who gives voice to awkward dorks everywhere. "Dorkiness is my realm in which I live, so I celebrate dorkiness," the director of "Chuck & Buck" and "Star Maps" says proudly. It's been eight years since Arteta's last film, "The Good Girl," which was honored by the National Board of Review. He's spent a lot of that time helming for TV, but his newest feature, "Youth in Revolt," is worth the wait. Actor Michael Cera has never been better as Nick Twisp, a 16-year-old desperate to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams. That might sound like the pithy premise of a "Road Trip"– or "American Pie"–type jock fest, but "Youth in Revolt" has the substance to back it up, thanks to C.D. Payne's original novel. Cera's character creates an alter ego reminiscent of Tyler Durden in...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tommy Lee Wallace (pictured) will direct Helliversity for FarCor Studios and Indusa Global. The man who helmed Halloween III, Fright Night Part 2, It and Vampires: Los Muertos will shoot the movie for six weeks beginning next March in La and India (!).
