Absurd and amusing but feels like it peaks mid-film and has a so-so ending
A 74-year old man sits at home listening to his radio when he settles onto a country-style song. He gets dressed up in boots, jacket and hat and heads down the road to his local pub. Its not the old west but it does have certain themes that seem familiar.
Screened separately and together on television and widely available on the internet, this short film was one of several that were commissioned by Robbie Williams to help promote his new album Rudebox. None of the shorts were videos but they were all standalone short films "inspired" by a song off the album but always intended to exist in their own right. This film is another of the shorts that gets by on rather absurd juxtaposition here it is the old cowboy in the working man's club. It is a simple joke but it works well enough without ever being hilarious. The conclusion is not as good as it needed to be though and undid some of the good build that had gone before.
Visually the film gets it right and it does benefit from the Williams song actually being pretty good. Not anything brilliant then but it is mostly absurd and amusing with the only downside being that the film peaks about halfway through and lacks a strong conclusion.
