Alliterations Help Make It Fun
ccthemovieman-127 October 2007
Dick Dastardly and his partner - a dog - reclaim the early lead by cheating, taking a short cut. These kind of tactics are used not only in this episode but in every one, from what I've seen. Those jokes usually aren't that funny but what works better are the different ways in which he tries to sabotage everyone. Here, for instance, he and "Muttley" (the dog) build a giant missile (they work fast in cartoons!) with it aimed at the rock "to make the biggest Grand Canyon they ever saw." But - also typical of the gags in here - the dog screws it up with humorous results.

The use of alliteration in the narration is good, too. For instance, after the "canyon" is made, the announces says, "....after Dastardly's destructive depression" (meaning the hole in the ground)" and a minute latter, "meanwhile as Dick Dastardly darts across the desert" or "as Dastardly designs his devious dirty deed."

You get the drift. Actually, that alliteration, and a variety of corny puns by the narrator, often are the highlight of the humor for me. It's usually more clever than the slapstick sight gags, although there are a few good ones in here and the colors in this show are vibrant - it's a good-looking animated series. Of the contestants, "Pat Pending," the wild inventor who changes his racer into all kinds of things in split seconds, usually is the most fun competitor to watch.

Later events of note include hostilities from the local Indian chief, "Chief Crazy Buffalo" who would be deemed politically incorrect in today's world and not be shown. That would be a loss because he says some pretty funny things, PC or not. He was the star of this particular leg of the race.

The second half concludes the race through Wyoming with the finish line at Well Digger. The chief obstacle for the races are a bunch of bears who are trying to hitch rides out of Yellowrock Park. Apparently, the bears want to check out city life.

Highlights, for me, include a few more alliterations ("that villain of velocity," etc.), and a few good sight gags of racers trying to go over a canyon.
