Exclusive: French film industry veteran Nicolas Royer, who was line and executive producer on Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes buzz title The Substance, has boarded Catherine Hardwicke’s upcoming feature A French Pursuit, starring Toni Collette.
The production, which is remake of Caroline Vignal’s 2020 French hit My Donkey, My Lover & I (Antoinette Dans Les Cévennes), starring Laura Calamy, is due to shoot in the Cévennes region in south-central France this summer.
Royer will line and executive produce the movie, which is lead produced by Christopher Simon at New Sparta Productions and Collette under her Vocab Films banner.
The new production will be first official gig for Royer’s company Voulez-Vous Production Services, which he created in 2023 to build on his work on The Substance.
Royer was line and executive producer on the body horror, lead produced by the UK’s Working Title and starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid.

Personal Best: Caro Returns to Studio Filmmaking with Feel-Good Adaptation
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand director Niki Caro, who made headlines with her 2002 sophomore film, Whale Rider, before making her Hollywood debut with 2005’s North Country. After the dismal reception of her 2009 effort, A Heavenly Vintage (aka The Vinter’s Luck), she’s helmed, of all things, a Disney film, McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner, once the penultimate star of mainstream, sports themed cinema, finds himself as the figure responsible for fostering athletic careers, moving from Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day to late 1980’s cross-country coach here. Caro’s film is the second ‘based on a true story’ minority flavored studio flick this year, following Sean McNamara’s Spare Parts, which also relates the travails of a group of Hispanic students overcoming odds to succeed in an organized school events. Beat by methodical beat,...

An angelic Gaspard Ulliel is all about the wine in A Heavenly Vintage.
The 2009 fantastical period movie A Heavenly Vintage is based on Elizabeth Knox’s 2000 novel The Vintner’s Luck, which juggles a story involving a 19th century peasant, wine, lovemaking and divine guidance.
Jeremie Renier plays Sobran, a young winemaker who rises to prominence through the unlikely guidance of a mysterious angel. His talents make him the object of desire of a beautiful but chilly baroness (Vera Farmiga, Higher Ground) who tempts him to stray from his loving wife (Keisha Castle-Hughes, The Nativity Story) and children. As time goes by, good wines come and go as the heavenly wine overlord continues his work on the fruit of the vine. Sobran, meanwhile, finds himself attracted to both women and in a situation where he must assess what’s most important in his life.

The last time I remember mentioning Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck was August 2009 when I previewed a few titles playing at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. The film played the fest and was ultimately forgotten.
Mike Goodridge at Screen Daily said it fell "midway between absurd and engrossing, misjudged and intelligent."
And Justin Chang at Variety said, "It's one of those ambitious grand-summation works -- rooted in the bittersweet truism that life, like wine, grows richer with age -- but not even Caro's earthy, sensuous filmmaking can overcome the tale's glib supernatural conceit, overstated moral lessons and overall dramatic torpor."
Based on Elizabeth Knox's bestselling novel, The Vintner's Luck is set in early 19th century France and tells the story of Sobran Jodeau (Jeremie Renier), a young peasant winemaker and the three loves of his life--his wife Celeste (Keisha Castle-Hughes), the baroness Aurora de Valday (Vera Farmiga) and...

The homevid label Panorama Ent. have picked up some table scraps that nobody wants in Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck - a surprise bomb that appeared at the 2009 edition of Tiff from the filmmaker who gave us the affecting The Whale Rider. The wine-making period romance will make its U.S. premiere this month at the Sedona Film Festival with a theatrical roll-out planned for this spring/summer. Gist: An adaptation of Elizabeth Knox's novel of the same name, the film is a story of love, wine and angels set in early 19th century France. It tells the tale of an ambitious, young, peasant winemaker and his lifelong relationship with an angel as together they grapple with the sensual, the sacred and the profane in search of the perfect vintage. Worth Noting: With the kind of accolades that Caro received for her debut film, she then directed 2005's...

It's been an interesting ride for Keisha Castle-Hughes since she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for the performance she gave in Whale Rider at age 11: She made a Star Wars cameo and toplined Catherine Hardwicke's middling The Nativity Story, then gave it her best shot with the sexy gay angel drama The Vintner's Luck, which had no luck winning fans at the Toronto Film Festival last fall. Still, the press release I received today announcing her guest-starring stint on the syndicated Hercules wannabe Legend of the Seeker...well, it's quite the cautionary tale, isn't it?...

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Vera Farmiga to talk about her new movie,“Up in the Air,” about the timely odyssey of Ryan Bingham (Oscar winner George Clooney), a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection. When he falls for a simpatico fellow traveler (Farmiga), Ryan’s boss (Jason Bateman), inspired by a young, upstart efficiency expert (Anna Kendrick), threatens to permanently call him in from the road. Faced with the prospect, at once terrifying and exhilarating, of being grounded, Ryan begins to contemplate what it might actually mean to have a home.
For the vital role of Alex, whose elite travel program savvy seduces Ryan but who also triggers a desire for real sharing, director Jason Reitman turned to award-winning actress Vera Farmiga, best known for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.

I find Jeremie Renier to be a competent, talented and dedicated actor - I have the same sentiment when it comes to French mega-star Gaspard Ulliel. But in Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck, I can't help but feel that both actors' 'sentiments', hard work and dedication to their characters were irrelevant and therefore immaterial because the filmmaker failed to transfer the essense of Elizabeth Knox's story into the big screen.

Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.

- - - These hitlists are more than point of references to our own - they are inspiration to keep us on our feet and come up with a listing that consider all angles. I don't think anyone is naïve enough to list down and rank 50 young actors ( and 50 young actresses) and expect everyone to agree and be happy,...

I rely heavily on INDIEWire when it comes to indie news for obvious reasons. Their Box Office reports are always insightful, up-to-date and worth a fair amount of time to look over and analyze. However, their latest report which focused on Jane Campion's latest movie - Bright Star - appeared to be unfair in their analysis of its Box office performance, say people related to the movie, in particular Bob Berney (who together with Bill Pohlad has bought Us rights to Jane Campion's Bright Star.)

"Star"‘s opening does not fare well against Campion's other films. On 7, 2 and 6 screens respectively, "The Portrait of a Lady," "Holy Smoke" and "In The Cut" each averaged between $15,000 and $17,000, while "The Piano" debut to a whopping $37,854 per its four theaters back in November...

Since becoming a teenage parent, Whale Rider Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes is relishing the role of a lifetime - costarring her daughter. "I absolutely love being a mother," Castle-Hughes, 19, told People at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her new film The Vintner's Luck. "It's been a blessing. It's fun and it's hard, but it's absolutely amazing." At the age of 17, Castle-Hughes gave birth to Felicity-Amore, now 2, with boyfriend Bradley Hull. Since then, she's chosen to be out of the Hollywood spotlight to focus on taking care of her toddler, who is blossoming into a mini version of herself.

As expected, the movie version of a beloved novel by Elizabeth Knox, The Vintner's Luck, has a different movie version. It deviates completely from the essence of Knox's story. There is no more Xas-Sobran relationship which is the heart and soul of the novel. Instead the New Zealand filmmaker, Niki Caro, opted to make it a tringle of sorts - Sobran (Jeremie Renier)-Celeste (Keisha Castle-Hughes)-Xas (Gaspard Ulliel), and even a quartet - the Baroness Aurora de Valday (Vera Farmiga) who is a sort of a nuisance 'support'.

- - - Someone who read the book and reacted to a Variety review exclaimed:
It seems to me that Caro's film version has maintained faith with neither the essence of the book nor the story itself. The love affair between Xas and Sobran has been transferred to Sobran and Céleste, thereby diluting and and making nonsense of...

Besides offering a smackdown of corporate culture, this year's Toronto Film Festival also offers an impressive number of films by women. A partial list includes Bright Star by Jane Campion, An Education by Lone Scherfig, Vision by Margarethe von Trotta, The Vintner's Luck by Niki Caro, and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller. Already, there's Oscar buzz surrounding Campion's film, as well as Education star Carey Mulligan. My favorite from women filmmakers so far is Campion's Bright Star, a cinematic tone poem about the love between poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and girl next door Fanny Brawne (Abby Cornish). The film's visuals and sensibility are so exquisite, they flirt with the sublime. And though a period piece, Star bears no trace of Merchant Ivory or Masterpiece Theater. Campion has conceived the film as...

As a result, we here at RopeofSilicon have received 73 new images from 18 of the films that will be screening at this year's festival and these films include the likes of everything from Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck to Grant Heslov's The Men Who Stare at Goats, two Werner Herzog pictures in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Calls New Orleans and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, as well as something for horror fans with new looks at Jennifer's Body as well as a gallery for [Rec] 2. Along with each preview over the following four pages...

I'm pretty sure you'll have Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman is to play) Amelia Earheart (Yup, Hilary Swank!), Julia Child (Meryl Streep), Coco Chanel (Audrey Tautou) and Bruno (Sasha Baron Cohen) on your list already! On the other end of the spectrum, there's Edward Cullen (Rob Pattinson), Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) to consider, esp by the Twilight fans.

- We'd have a problem type-casting Niki Caro as a genre, or subject specific director. She commenced her career with the delightful, child's fantasy with a moral at the end of the story locally set New Zealand pic (Whale Rider), followed with the women's rights in the workplace (North Country) and will preem a period piece at the Toronto Film Festival next month with the long awaited The Vintner's Luck. Now according to THR, Caro's new directing gig is a mid-life crisis, contempo dramedy from the Pov of a male character called Buttercup. Part of the 2007 Blacklist of Best Unproduced Screenplays, it surfaced at the bottom tier of the list - which means absolutely nothing about the scripts' quality, this is written by first time scribe Alice O'Neil and will be produced by Michael London's Groundswell Prods. who have the upcoming The Informant! and All Good Things as their next projects slated for release.

I know very few people are going to click on this headline, but I think reporting on the work of Niki Caro is important since female directors are expected to have a great 2009 with the likes of Kathryn Bigelow already hitting it big with The Hurt Locker and Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Lone Scherfig, Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers all making a splash later this year as well as the upcoming directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (I apologize if I am missing anyone). While the debut trailer for Caro's The Vintner's Luck certainly underwhelmed prior to its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September I still believe Whale Rider carries weight and North Country was a solid effort even if it wasn't a box-office or critical runaway. That said, next up for Caro is Buttercup reports The Hollywood Reporter with a script from Alice O'Neil. The...

"Whale Rider" helmer Niki Caro is taking a sip from the "Buttercup," signing to direct the dramedy being produced by Michael London's Groundswell Prods.
"Ocean's Thirteen" writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien, meanwhile, also have boarded the project as producers.
Sarah Polley had at one point been attached to direct "Buttercup," which centers on a middle-age man who has made a mess of his life but after the death of his wife -- and with the help of his adult daughter -- attempts to get that life back in order. Alice O'Neil penned the script.
The production is out to cast, with producers hoping to lock in talent for the two-hander shortly.
Despite the dramatic subject matter, the project contains elements of comedy that humanize the protagonists. "Alice writes with such a light touch, which is what makes you want to take a journey with the characters," Koppelman said.

Since last year, I've been anticipating two movies from cinema's most accomplished female directors - Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck and Jane Campion's Bright Star. The trailer for The Vintner's Luck was just made available and we have it just a few days ago.
Now we have Jane Campion's Bright Star! Yahoo Movies has just presented the theatrical trailer for Bright Star - the acclaimed Jane Campion's film focuses on poet John Keats' three-year relationship with Fanny Brawne, cut short by his early death. With tMF favorite Ben Whishaw (ranked #2 among the Top 50 hitlist) playing Keates and Abbie Cornish (coincidentally also ranked #2 among the Top 50 hottest young actresses list).

A thing of beauty is a joy forever! Quite appropriate indeed. More about the film after the jump!

Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck will have its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and now a trailer for the romantic drama has found its way online and I must say I'm not particularly moved by it. The film features an impressive cast made up of Vera Farmiga, Gaspard Ulliel, Keisha Castle-Hughes and Jeremie Renier telling the story of a peasant wine-maker (Renier) in 19th century France and his life-long relationship with an angel (Ulliel), as they grapple with the sensual, the sacred and the profane in search of the perfect vintage. Caro made a big splash in 2002 with the impressive Oscar-nominated feature Whale Rider which earned Castle-Hughes an Oscar nomination. She followed that up with North Country, which I thought was a pretty good flick, but it didn't really interest audiences much at all. Vintner's Luck is her first film in four years...

Once upon a time, the vampire genre was a hip, gayish place, saved from falling into disrepair by stylish stories like The Hunger and Interview with the Vampire. Now, though, the lusty heterosexuals of Twilight and True Blood have moved in and indulged in a bit of genre gentrification, and it's time for homoeroticism-tinged fantasy to find a new niche. Fortunately, with her new film The Vintner's Luck, Whale Rider director Niki Caro has seen fit to inaugurate what may be the newest fantasy frontier: French dudes having sex with hot, male angels.

I'm still trying to figure out the trailer - I'm a bit confused and also intrigued. I have read the book by Elizabeth Knox, and I'm confused whether the carnal relationship between the Angel Xas (played by Gaspard Ulliel) and Sorban (Jeremie Renier) will actually be depicted in the movie. It seems the focus is more on Sorban's relationships with the two major female characters - Vera Farmiga and Keisha Castle-Hughes. I can be absolutely wrong, since this is only the trailer. But that's my impression.
Also, I love the scenery! It's like being transported back in time. I also think having both French and English make the movie more authentic. I was really hoping Gaspard Ulliel will shine as Xas - it's such an unforgetable character.
