Documentary on Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of US Naval forces in the Pacific during WW2. Given command of a shattered fleet after Japan's devastating surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, with meagre forces Nimitz managed to halt Japan's advance, dealing a decisive blow at Midway, then went on the offensive. Eventually he would lead the largest fleet the world has ever known and have a huge hand in Japan's ultimate defeat.
Great documentary on a great man. Nimitz is hardly the stuff of legend - solid, unflappable and dependable rather than aggressive and flamboyant. Yet this documentary makes for highly engaging viewing. Moreover, the documentary highlights these qualities and shows how they are positive traits and how they made Nimitz the man he was.
Good background in the lead-up to WW2, covering key points in his life when his future could have turned out quite differently.
The WW2 period is obviously key, and is covered well.
Only negative is that the documentary was too short - I felt I could have done with even more information, especially on his WW2 strategy, than the 45 or so minutes allowed.
Illuminating, edifying and interesting.
