It's a not so wonderful life
TheLittleSongbird10 January 2022
Despite being a fan of 'Animaniacs', 'Pinky and the Brain' and much of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' (though that show wasn't as consistent as the other two), 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain' never did much for me even as a child. There are a small handful of watchable episodes, though even they were not great, but at its worst the show was really quite bad. It did have a few strengths, that were obvious in all the episodes, but a lot of major flaws that were never really corrected.

"Yule Be Sorry" is not so wonderful, the concept was a good one (though spins on 'It's a Wonderful Life' is very familiar territory) and one of the show's more mature ones but the execution is pretty lukewarm and doesn't really do enough with it. A case of familiar territory executed with nothing new or insightful. "Yule Be Sorry" is not a terrible episode, every 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain' episode had their moments but it is really not good either.

It's not all bad. Brain is very entertaining and wonderfully deadpan, the show on the most part was a disaster when it came to character writing and interaction but somehow managed to get Brain spot on. It was a genius move having Maurice LaMarche back and he voices Brain perfectly.

Some moments of colourful and decently detailed animation can be seen too. The voice acting in general is good.

However, "Yule Be Sorry" is a bit like "Narfily Ever After", another example of a good if very familiar concept that was very lacking when it came to imagination and freshness. The material comes over as on the tired side, with Elmyra's dialogue being very simplistic and the referencing is too random and shoe-horned in. There is no real wit or wildness and there is not much feel good, poignant or nostalgic about the story, for a Christmassy episode that parodies the granddaddy of all Christmas films it sure doesn't feel very festive and is quite bland. Not to mention it ends up not making much sense as well and is too simple and predictable.

While the animation was never terrible on 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain', it did always lack the polish and vibrancy as well as the imagination seen in the visuals of 'Animaniacs', 'Pinky and the Brain' and 'Tiny Toon Adventures', the big and wild variety of expressions are not there really. There is nothing dynamic or infectious about the music and the theme song has always grated. A massive problem is Elmyra, who makes one of her most obnoxious appearances here, quite amazing for a truly annoying character on this show, and her treatment of Brain is gratuitously cruel. The chemistry between the characters doesn't connect, is too acrimonious and sense is not a strong suit, never was.

Overall, not very good unfortunately let alone wonderful. 4/10.
