After refusing Israel's demand to turn away, the flotilla continued on course through international waters, and the Israeli Occupation Forces launched a night-raid attacking the boats. On one of the boats, the Mavi Marmara ship Israeli commandos shot and killed nine human rights activists, a tenth later died of his injuries. and wounded fifty unarmed civilians. They tried to confiscate mobile phones. They beat up passengers on the other five boats. The film details what happened that night, unravelling how the story was spun by the media. May 31, 2020 is the 10th anniversary of the deadly Israel military attack The next flotilla has been postponed from May 2020 due to Covid19 travel restrictions. It is coordinated by the Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

They came together to launch the Freedom Flotilla, a convoy of civilian humanitarian ships aiming to highlight the suffering of Palestinians in illegally-blockaded Gaza, break this blockade and alleviate the people's plight there. The Israeli navy attacked the Flotilla at night in the Mediterranean Sea, killing ten activists, and wounding and imprisoning hundreds more of international participants.

The film tells the story of the flotilla preparations and launch, with concerned citizens from around the globe coming together on a life-changing voyage to alleviate the suffering of strangers a world apart. It shows the Israeli attack upon their flotilla, with both footage that was broadcast and more that was smuggled off the ships, and analyses the claims of the Israeli spokespersons. These claims are juxtaposed with the survivors' tale and statements before, during and after the attack, including some never-before-seen footage from aboard the vessels prior to the attack.
The Truth: Lost at Sea reveals the stark contrast between what really happened and how it was spun in traditional and online media outlets, resulting in the perpetuation of impunity for crimes committed.
