“More Than Robots” is a sports film like you’ve never seen before.
Sure, it has teams and there is some fierce competition. But instead of a ball that is being passed around, “More Than Robots” follows groups of high school students who quickly assemble robots, create custom programs that control the robots and then enter their robots into battle. (It’s not exactly battle; the First Robotics competition depicted here is loosely “Star Wars” themed.) It’s pretty awe inspiring. And the kids are a ragtag, “Bad News Bears”-y outfit, no matter where in the world. It’s inspired and inspiring, odd and (occasionally) oddly emotional.
And bringing together this symphony of technology and team spirit is director Gillian Jacobs. Jacobs is a super talented, in-demand actress (she starred on six seasons of “Community” and recently appeared in Netflix’s terrific “Fear Street” trilogy of films) and she...

Sarah Ramos (Parenthood) has been tapped to play Cheryl Pistono, the girlfriend of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, in Adam McKay’s Los Angeles Lakers HBO drama series, based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is producing.
Written by Max Borenstein, the fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era both on and off the court.
In contrast to her boyfriend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s public persona, Ramos’ Cheryl Pistono is warm and outgoing. She uses her emotional intelligence to encourage Kareem to be himself, and together they weather the highs and lows of a life in basketball.

Exclusive: Sarah Ramos, perhaps best known for her role as Haddie Braverman on the NBC series Parenthood and a recurring role in Showtime’s The Affair, has signed with Echo Lake Entertainment for management representation in all areas.
Ramos currently produces and stars on the “true crime” podcast, The Renner Files, a comedic six-episode series that does a deep dive into Jeremy Renner’s ill-fated celeb app.
She directed and starred in the web series City Girl from a screenplay she wrote when she was 12 years old. She’s teamed with Matt Spicer and Dan Harmon to develop a show inspired by the web series for Disney+. Disney Plus’ vice president of nonfiction originals Dan Silver has exited the streamer for a new role at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
Silver will take on the role of director of documentary feature films at Netflix. He will report to Lisa Nishimura, vice president of independent film and documentary features.
Silver has a long history at the Mouse House, having held roles at Disney Plus, Marvel Entertainment, ABC News Digital, and ESPN Films. In his most recent role, he oversaw the launch of Disney Plus’ unscripted slate that included shows like “The Imagineering Story,” “Marvel’s 616,” and “Marvel’s Hero Project.”
Silver’s exit also comes as Disney has undergone a massive restructuring under CEO Bob Chapek, which was announced in October. The Walt Disney Television Group also recently announced a significant restructuring under Dana Walden, which has led to large-scale layoffs.

As we entered 2020, there was arguably no actor poised to have as monumental of a year as Alison Brie. With an already diverse body of work ranging from period dramas to comedies, animation, video games, indie darlings, and more, this year especially feels like a snapshot of everything she’s strived for her entire career thus far. She has four acting credits across such films as “Horse Girl,” “The Rental,” “Happiest Season,” and “Promising Young Woman” while also spending time behind the camera directing an episode of the Disney+ docuseries “Marvel 616” and producing and co-writing the script for “Horse Girl.” Since her dueling breakout performances in “Mad Men” and “Community,” we’ve always known Brie was someone who refused to be put into a box, and it’s that exact drive that’s made her such an excitingly unpredictable talent on screen and a force of versatility.

The seventh episode of Marvel 616, the Disney+ documentary series promoting the Marvel brand, is titled “The Marvel Method.” It references the pioneering shift in comics work production that came about at the dawn of the Marvel era of comics, and is ostensibly about the fun, wacky way that Marvel comics get made today. What it actually portrays is a high-stress, broken production process.
Also, nothing that happens in it is consistent with the traditional Marvel Method.
The episode opens with Dan Slott, writer of a near-record 180 issues of Spider-Man comics, and currently Marvel’s Fantastic Four writer, sitting down with 12 weeks of lead time to write his first issue of Iron Man 2020. The writer gets one sentence into the script before being distracted by a Twitter notification. The episode goes on to detail the painstaking process that the Marvel team undergoes to put the first issue of Iron Man 2020 on shelves.

The docuseries is a staple of virtually every major streaming service, and despite what you may think, not all of them have to revolve around murder and serial killers, although those do tend to be the ones that generate the most publicity. Of course, Disney Plus has often faced accusations of being painfully short on high-profile original content, but the Mouse House’s platform has now added a new docuseries titled Marvel’s 616 to the library.
The eight-episode show takes a deep dive into some of the more obscure corners of the titular company’s history, including the bizarre Japanese Spider-Man TV show. So far, 616 has received hugely favorable comparisons to ESPN’s 30 for 30, which is hardly surprising when the sports channel is also a part of Disney’s vast multimedia empire, and fans seem to be digging it.

Like with most elements of media, women have always been a part of the male-dominated comic landscape — but their contributions were never thoroughly documented. The new Disney+ series, “Marvel’s 616,” does double duty by examining women’s contributions in the world of comic creation and also by placing women behind the camera, revealing the show’s narrative.
“Marvel’s 616” is a docuseries aimed at lifting the veil on the Marvel universe to showcase the real people at its center. Each of the three women directors who participated on the series felt they were picked because of a connection to the material. “My way into the series was very specific to [my] episode,” Alison Brie told IndieWire. Her episode focuses on a high school theater program that performs Marvel-based plays. It’s Friday, which means it’s time for Disney Plus to add a bunch of new titles to its library. Today sees seven movies and TV shows go up on the streaming service in the US, including five new episodes of original shows and a couple of freshly licensed movies. There’s much to enjoy, then, but the highlight of the haul probably has to be the premiere of a much-anticipated Marvel series.
Marvel 616 might not be a new entry in the McU, but it is a Marvel Studios production, acting as a neat introduction to the franchise’s upcoming exclusive D+ shows. The anthology documentary series is set to explore the historical, cultural and societal impacts of the Marvel Comics Universe and its intersection with the world. It kicks off its first episode of six today and should keep fans going through December, ahead of WandaVision dropping in January.

Disney Plus is barely a year-old streaming service, but it already has cornered a particular sub-genre of unscripted programming that should surprise no one. Shows like “Inside Disney, “One Day at Disney” and “Marvel’s Hero Project” offer in-depth looks at the creative minds behind the Walt Disney Company and its extraordinary impact on the world, pairing inspirational stories with swelling triumphant music to underline just how fantastic Disney’s multi-billion dollar conglomerate truly is. “Propaganda” is probably too strong a word, but it’s not altogether wrong, either. The purpose of these shows, first and foremost, is to underline Disney’s unique place in entertainment and publicize its most heartwarming effects. So when I first turned on “Marvel’s 616,” I figured I knew I’d be in for — but was only halfway right.

This coming week is a big one for Disney Plus, as the streamer is breaking convention and adding content on other days as well as Friday. The Mouse House’s platform typically only updates its library on the last day of the week, but the next seven days are an exception as new titles are also dropping on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Of course, we’re talking about the 17th’s Lego Star Wars Holiday Special and the 18th’s double bill series premiere of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. The reason why these titles aren’t landing on Friday along with the rest is because they have significant ties to those specific dates.
The Lego special is a tongue-in-cheek homage to 1978’s infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, which aired on CBS – for one time only – on November 17th. And as for the new Mickey Mouse animated series, the legendary...

A new month means a load of new original content coming to Disney Plus. As much as their rich vault of classic titles is a huge draw, the Mouse House has made the year-old streaming service nearly essential for consumers with their regular delivery of original movies and TV series dropping weekly. And in November, there’s much to get excited for, including multiple episodes of many new shows, as well as a few fresh films.
First of all, obviously the most notable title on this list is The Mandalorian, which airs new installments every Friday of November after kicking off its second season on October 30th. Fans of that galaxy far, far away will also not want to miss the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, which lands on Tuesday, November 17th, an unlikely mash-up sequel to both The Rise of Skywalker and 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special.

When Disney+ was unveiled, we were promised that it’d be the home of exclusive McU shows. Well, it’s almost been a year since the streaming service launched and there’s still no sign of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki and the rest. Disney and Marvel Studios are forgiven for not being able to predict the Covid-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc upon the entertainment industry, but either way, it’s been a very long wait.
New Disney+ Marvel content has been confirmed, though, and it’s hitting the service as soon as this November. This will be in the form of documentary series Marvel’s 616, which will “explore Marvel’s rich legacy of pioneering characters, creations and storytelling.” Each episode of the show will explore corners of the Marvel Universe, with the ‘616’ in the title an indication that they’ll be focusing on the long running comics continuity.

Gillian Jacobs hasn’t been on a film shoot for months, but that hasn’t kept the perpetually busy performer from landing plenty of work. The actress has spent the past few months in lockdown burning through various gigs, from recording the second season of the podcast “Blood Ties” to new voiceover work, including the comic book-inspired series “Invincible.” Jacobs and her “Community” cohorts even got in on the “Zoom reunion” fad early, putting on a charity-benefitting table read and Q&a in mid-May.
Predictably, the event renewed calls for a “Community” movie, though all Jacobs will say at this point is that she feels “lucky that I’m part of something where people want more of it.” For now, however, she has plenty on her plate, including a burgeoning career as a documentary filmmaker.
And she’s on the virtual promotional trail for her latest indie gem: Kris Rey...

‘Marvel’s 616’ at Comic-Con: Disney Plus Docuseries Highlights Unsung Women, Wacky Marvel Characters
Usually a massive presence at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment is largely sitting out this year’s virtual iteration of the 50-year-old fan convention, Comic-Con@Home. That is, save for a panel on “Marvel’s 616,” a Disney Plus docuseries that covers the history of Marvel Comics through the lens of a series of individual filmmakers.
Actors Gillian Jacobs (“Community”) and Paul Scheer (“Black Monday”) joined the panel to share their experiences directing episodes for the series, the first time either had made a documentary film.
