After Disney declared victory in its proxy battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz, CEO Bob Iger went on a theme-park offensive during the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Delivering scripted video remarks from a perch overlooking Disneyland, Iger extolled the parks as a key strategic area of focus and offered a brief first look (see below) at the “possible” new Avatar-themed area at the Anaheim park. Pandora – The World of Avatar, has been up and running at Disney World in Florida for years and Iger said it is the company’s “intention” to make it a new feature of Disneyland. “We’re thrilled about many potential new stories that our guests could experience in Walt’s original theme park, including the opportunity to embark on all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to the world of Pandora,” he said.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro provided a little more clarity on long-gestating expansions of Walt Disney World and the resort’s Animal Kingdom experience at the company’s annual D23 fan event this morning.
First, he brought on Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Imagineering, for a “Blue Sky” look at possible developments at Disney Parks.
The future expansion plans for Magic Kingdom in Florida are the largest ever for the park, according to Vaughn. Imagineers are looking to tell stories similar in scale to things like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Pandora – The World of Avatar, which will include new attractions, restaurants, shows and more.
Zootopia has long been rumored to be one of the elements to be included in the expansion, and Parks officials revealed that a new show based on the film is being created for the Tree of Life theater at Animal Kingdom.

Disney is doubling down on its animated franchises.
Disney CEO Bob Iger teased that more installments are in the works for Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. On an earnings call Wednesday, Iger told investors these future films were an example of how “we are leaning into our unrivaled brands.” Throughout the call, he stressed again and again the importance of curating the company’s marquee brands and franchises.
He provided no further details about creative teams involved in the development process.
Toy Story, voice starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, has had four main installments dating back to 1995, with Toy Story 4 topping 1 billion at the box office in 2019. Last year, the Chris Evans-led spinoff Lightyear was released to muted results.
Frozen II flew to great heights in 2019, earnings 1.4 billion, with the 2013 first installment bringing in 1.2 billion. Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel lead the cast.

Streaming video has boomed over the past few years — but it still represents just around one-fifth of all time Americans spend in front of their TVs, according to a new report from Nielsen.
In the fourth quarter of 2019, about 19% of the time spent watching TV by consumers who have internet-connected TV devices was from streaming video sources, including free and subscription-based services, according to Nielsen. That’s up from 10% in Q1 of 2018.
Netflix had 31% share of all connected-tv viewing in Q4 2019, the most of any single internet service. YouTube was next with 21% share, followed by Hulu at 12% and Amazon at 8%. Other services, including recently launched Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus, accounted for the remaining 28%. Note that Nielsen here is measuring streaming viewing only on TVs, excluding videos watched on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.
Nielsen’s “Total Audience Report” quantified the sheer volume of entertainment available to U.
