Why the woman has an accent
info-74322-6768718 June 2020
At the previous reviewer who says the mother speaks with an English accent: if you know Surinam well you know that (former British) Guyana is next to Suriname and that there are a lot Hindustani people from Guyana are living in Nickerie, which is on the border, and even in Paramaribo (for example almost all fishermen).

A brave effort.

This film is one of the very few films made in Suriname and is also about a difficult and very often wrongly romantised theme; growing up Deaf in a society that has no place for sign language or Deaf culture. This is not a documentary but it does a very good job introducing the theme. For this, it deserves a lot of credit. It is a story worth telling, but in my opinion script, acting and directing have too much flaws to give it more then 5 out of 10.

Very, very bad acting.

I was looking forward to see this movie because my name is the same. The film is set in Surinam, where my parents came from and is in Dutch. Like most Dutch movies, this one sucks big time. People try so hard to Act well, that their character looses their charm. In other words, they Act terrible. Some speak Sarnami, but not the way Sarnami really is spoken. There is this village woman, Wiren's mother, who is not educated but can speak English and when she speaks Sarnami, she has an English accent. Does not make any sense. I still have to finish the movie. It's hard to watch. But Aliens III is on television, so Wiren has to wait.
