Cass Warner, filmmaker, author and granddaughter of Harry Warner, co-founder of Warner Bros., has died. She was 76.
Her death was announced by her son and Yellowstone actor Cole Hauser on his Instagram page. “Her kindness, love, humor and amazing spirit will be missed by not only my family but the world. You have touched so many,” he wrote.
Cass’ grandfather, Harry Warner, was the eldest Warner brother, a Polish immigrant who co-founded the studio in 1923 after jumping into the early days of movie mania in 1905 with brothers Sam, Albert and Jack. The foursome created a cinematic powerhouse, a dream factory that was the social conscience of Hollywood, one that churned out timely and topical films about the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, the Red Scare and more.
Harry’s daughter, Betty Warner Sheinbaum, wrote of her father as “a very serious man. He was the company’s conscience and driving force.

For all intents and purposes, the DC Comics shared cinematic universe began in earnest on July 20th, 2013. The Brothers Warner announced to a packed Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con that their next superhero film would be one seeing a face-off between the two most popular characters in the history of the genre. While it was an announcement that set a shockwave across the world that Michael Shannon’s General Zod would be proud of, it was the only official announcement for that weekend for live-action properties from the WB/DC tag team.
An announcement of a live-action TV show for The Flash followed just a couple weeks later. WB/DC decided that the small screen would be the best medium for The Scarlet Speedster aka Barry Allen despite many fans’ disappointment in the lack of a silver screen presence. The show would see the life of day thanks in a big way to Arrow,...

Despicable Me 2 looks probable to pick up a repeat victory this weekend, making it four in a row for animation after Monsters University's two-peat. You can't stop the children or their parents who buy tickets! However, Despicable Me 2 simply must be more front-loaded than the original, it has done such huge business that it can't possibly sustain similar carryover numbers. The first effort dropped just under 42 percent, that's called "word-of-mouth" but I like this one to slip 47 percent, to a number around $44.2 million. When you're talking new releases, the topic on everyone's mind is Pacific Rim. The Brothers Warner have done a few brilliant things (frontloading the Rt reviews with positives) and a few not so clever things (releasing a trailer filled with only loud noises). Is this Battlehship all over againc Starship Troopersc The tracking is miserable (see that number below) so I can't bring myself to go too much higher.

Back in June, we brought you the news when Warner Bros. Pictures hired Will Beall, writer of Gangster Squad, and the forthcoming remake of Logan’s Run to pen the script that will finally unite the DC heroes of the Justice League onscreen.
In a multi-studio project update via THR, the trade reports that even with Christopher Nolan‘s final Bat-installment, The Dark Knight Rises still simmering in theaters, The Brothers Warner are already putting plans into motion “to resuscitate Batman as a stand-alone franchise and/or as part of a planned Justice League ensemble that could connect to next summer’s Man of Steel.”
No production or release dates have been announced for Justice League or an as yet Untitled Batman Reboot. Stay tuned!

With a career that dates back in the 1950s, Robert Altman started out making industrials and working in television before switching to features in 1970 with "Mash," a film that kicked off a decade where the director flirted with perfection, with classics like "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," "The Long Goodbye," and "Nashville." The 1980's wouldn't be as kind after Altman started the decade with the musical "Popeye," but he would eventually bounce back commercially with 1992's "The Player" and 1993's "Short Cuts" before receiving his fifth Academy Award nomination for directing with 2001's "Gosford Park." The director's career career ended with Altman's death in 2006, and documentarian Ron Mann ("Comic Book Confidential") is planning to examine his career in the upcoming Epix Original Documentary "Altman."
"Altman defined cinema for me — he had an extraordinarily rollicking career," Mann told Variety. The Canadian director is planning to start shooting the doc in the fall, but...

Cass Warner Sperling, the granddaughter of Warner Bros co-founder Harry M. Warner, has completed the feature documentary Hopper: In His Own Words. Well, actually she needs some finishing funds, but it is almost done and ready to be shopped for feature or TV. The film is mostly comprised of a long interview she did with Hopper for The Brothers Warner, a documentary she directed about the family business. “When I interviewed him he hadn’t been on the lot since the 50s, but he told all of these magnificent stories of his career, including how he went through these situations with drugs and how he confronted his demons and decided to not only survive but carry on with his art form,” Warner Sperling said. “He turned himself in for rehab and was given an antidote to get off it. It was a strong drug that made his hands shake and left him unable to speak.

Chicago – Every seasoned movie lover can attest to having a favorite shot in Michael Curtiz’s 1942 classic “Casablanca,” a picture practically overflowing with indelible imagery. The first appearance of freedom fighter-turned-café owner Rick (Humphrey Bogart) decked out in a white tux, the tearful letter that turns to literal tears in a rainstorm, the final walk through the fog…all unforgettable.
Yet the shot that remains closest to my heart is the one that lingers on the face of Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), as she becomes hopelessly lost in the evocative notes and lyrics of a song from her past. No actress embodies earthy sensuality and misty-eyed passion quite like Bergman, who was at the peak of her luminous beauty at age 26. Her trancelike state of nostalgic longing never fails to mesmerize me, as her eyes convey what words could only feebly articulate.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

There are bigger movies, and there are better movies, but few movies have become the go to selection when throwing out favorite or best film titles, and fewer still have become as synonymous with Hollywood itself. A film that was famously released without a great deal of expectation coming from anyone involved with its creation, it has become not only an icon of the movie industry, but an inescapable part of American culture.
The Casablanca 70th Anniversary Edition adds even more bonuses to watch, plus some physical goodies, making it a must buy, and great gift, especially for anyone who hasn’t broken down and taken the title home before.
The standard caveat to this edition, especially among the serious fans who pay attention to such things, is going to be the fact that the film had an Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray release only a few years ago, and that edition...

If you want to be a screenwriter, you may want to start posing interesting hypothetical questions on Reddit. Questions like “Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or Meu?”
That’s just what author and two-time Jeopardy! champion, James Erwin asked and once then the posting reached the top of Reddit, it was seen by Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner. Kolbrenner then contacted Erwin and began working with him to develop the concept.
Now, Variety reports that Madhouse Entertainment‘s Kolbrenner brought the project which “will follow the Marines as they’re flung into the past where they encounter one of the world’s most legendary villains and disrupt history. To return home, they have to set history back on the track they altered.” to Chris Gary at Warner Bros., who...

It’s a real-life act of Hollywood villainy that ranks with the very worst depicted on the big screen — how Jack L. Warner tricked his brothers into surrendering the studio they’d spent half a century building. “I was always fascinated by my great-uncle Jack, whose name was never mentioned in my house after Grandpa Harry died,” says Cass Warner, who recounts this tragedy of Shakespearean proportions in her documentary “The Brothers Warner,” recently released on DVD. “It took me many years...

Precious: Based On The Novel “Push” By Sapphire (Lionsgate) In-your-face, but undeniably powerful film that follows the plight of an overweight inner-city teen (Gabourey Sidbe, a real find) who must deal with an abusive mother (Mo’Nique, in a career-making turn for which she won a most-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar), a baby born of her abusive, and absent, father, and trying to survive day-to-day with few people to offer her help, save for a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) in a special ed program. Director/producer Lee Daniels, a former personal manager/producer-turned-filmmaker, brings a kitchen sink authenticity to the proceedings, along with a cast of famous powerhouse performers, who manage to disappear into their roles. Tough stuff, but not to be missed. Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). Bonuses: Commentary by Daniels; Featurettes; Interviews with Sapphire and Daniels; Deleted scene. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Leamington Spa film company Entanglement Productions has won third place in the Best Film category of the Iov (Institute of Videography) awards with its sci-fi thriller Triple Hit.
The film's writer/producer/director Huw Bowen is pictured below receving the award from Iov's Chris Waterlow and former Tomorrow's World star Maggie Philbin in an Oscars-style ceremony at the Iov Annual Convention, held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
Triple Hit was one of only five short-listed titles within the Best Film category. Judges were looking for exceptional video production standards, originality and creative flair.
The film is among the 150-plus movies being screened this week at the first Falstaff International Film Festival in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire.

Cass Warner Sperling is the granddaughter of Harry Warner, one of the four founding brothers of the Warner Brothers movie studio. Harry Warner and his brothers, Albert, Sam and Jack, strove to make films of social conscience and relevance. "The brother's credo upon founding the studio was 'to educate, to entertain and enlighten," Cass says. Through many mergers and corporate takeovers, Warner Brothers has morphed into part of the largest existing entertainment conglomerate. It is rare to find anyone who remembers the origins of Warner Brothers as a family business. Additionally, a large part of the Warner family story had been lost due to a painful family rift. Nearly three decades ago, Cass set out to learn more about Harry Warner and his brothers. She calls herself...
