For the past few years, editor, director, and animator Zach Passero has been working on a hand-drawn, animated horror film called The Weird Kidz and it’s finally making the rounds at film festivals. Passero, who has frequently worked with Lucky McKee on films like May (2002) and Tales of Halloween (2015), created The Weird Kidz from the fond memories of his childhood, and McKee serves as a producer on the film. Featuring cassette tapes and mullets and perfectly capturing the vibe of the eighties, The Weird Kidz follows three friends, 12-year-old boys Dug (Tess Passero), Mel (Glenn Bolton), and Fatt (Brian Ceely), as they go camping in the desert with Dug’s older brother Wyatt (Ellar Coltrane) and his girlfriend Mary (Sydney Wharton).
When the group stops at a gas station, the owner Duana tells them about The Night Child, a creature she claims lives in the desert and took her younger brother twenty-five years ago.

Torn Hearts is actress Brea Grant’s follow-up to her directorial debut, 12 Hour Shift. Here she’s turned her attention to the music industry. And while genre films about the price of fame stretch from The Phantom of the Opera to The Phantom of the Paradise and The 27 Club most of them are set in the world of rock, and frequently heavy metal. The closest I can think to a county-themed one is the Faustian Southern Rock tale Dark Roads 79.
Torn Hearts is both the title of the film and the name of the musical act led by Jordan and Leigh. They’re desperate to go from popular in Nashville to the big time and it looks like they’re about to get their chance as an...

The multi-talented Brea Grant is an actor, writer, and director, who has starred in several television shows and films like Dexter (2011), Halloween II (2009), and After Midnight (2019). In 2020, she wrote and directed the hilariously macabre 12 Hour Shift, which starred Angela Bettis. Grant’s latest project is the Blumhouse Television and Epix film Torn Hearts, which follows two singers trying to break into the country music scene in Nashville, but to do that they have to become friends with a reclusive country music star.
Written by Rachel Koller Croft and directed by Grant, Torn Hearts stars Abby Quinn and Alexxis Lemire as two friends who have a band called Torn Hearts. They jump at the opportunity to meet country music legend Harper Dutch, played by the iconic Katey Sagal. Harper has been living in seclusion since her sister died under mysterious circumstances, but she reluctantly agrees to help the two talented...

Keeping things in the family isn’t always easy—just ask the Gallagher Brothers. Blood doesn’t mean anything once fame and fortune enter the fray because outside interests will begin to whisper and divide until the world discovers two halves aren’t quite as good as the whole. That’s not saying Noel’s High Flying Birds or Liam’s Beady Eye are bad. They’ve both created some good music post-break-up, but neither reached the heights Oasis had. The former’s music and latter’s voice built something that could only exist with the two brothers working together. One could presume that some level of jealousy even helped fuel that success as both sought to prove their worth so vehemently that they ultimately exposed their respective animosity instead. At least we still have the music.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

Lexi opens with the standard card telling us where the footage we’re about to see came from followed by a montage of views from security cameras. Then a desperate looking woman appears followed by the film’s title card, there are no credits. It’s an effective and attention-grabbing opening.
More of a mockumentary than a found footage film, although it does incorporate plenty of it, Lexi is an investigation into the strange events surrounding the disappearance of social media influencer “Laughing Lexi” aka Alexandria Mancini.

Happy Halloweekend, dear readers! The best weekend of the year has finally arrived, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to indulge in all sorts of spooky shenanigans over the next few days. For this Halloween edition of “From Streams to Screams,” I decided to focus on horror movies that have come out in the last few years that would be perfect to enjoy while celebrating the arrival of Halloween.
If you’re anything like me, I tend to focus a lot on my favorite horror movies throughout the month of October to feed my nostalgia. So this year, I’ve been trying to check out some recent horror movies I may have missed in an effort to broaden my horizons a bit. With that in mind, I put together a list of 25 recent horror films that are currently streaming that should either deliver up some thrills and chills,...

Abby Quinn will star in an upcoming Blumhouse and Epix movie set in Nashville opposite Shiloh Fernandez and Joshua Leonard. They join the previously announced Alexxis Lemire and Katey Sagal in the film, which has the working title of “Tattered Hearts.”
The movie centers on a promising up-and-coming country duo who seek out the secluded mansion of their idol (Sagal), a former country music star and “Music City” royalty turned recluse. What starts out as a friendly visit devolves into a twisted series of horrors forcing the friends to confront the lengths they will go to realize
their dreams. Brea Grant (“12 Hour Shift”) is directing from a script by Rachel Koller Croft.

Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero may have left this plane of existence in 2017, but his legacy — the post-apocalyptic zombie movie genre that he created — lives on. According to the THR, Romero was working before his death on Twilight of the Dead, a film that would have been his final statement on the subject and the last installment in the series that included the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1979), Day of the Dead (1985), and others.
Now Romero’s widow Suzanne, who has been developing the script that her late husband started with three other writers, is ready to meet with directors for the project. Details on the plot remain secret, except for this tantalizing line: “The story is set in a decimated world. Life has all but disappeared. But there still may be hope for humanity.” Romero reportedly wanted to explore what came next after the...

Of the many wonderful things found in writer/director Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift last year, chief among them was the return of star Angela Bettis to genre movies. Once a prolific presence in indie horror—thanks in large part to her frequent collaborations with writer/director Lucky McKee—the Texas-born Bettis had stepped away from horror for several years following her turn in McKee’s The Woman and a brief role on Tom Holland’s anthology Twisted Tales. She continued to act, but was sorely missed in the genre. Thanks to Grant and 12 Hour Shift, Bettis is back.
It’s the aforementioned working relationship with Lucky McKee for which most horror fans probably know Bettis best. A working actor on television, film, and even Broadway for several years before she was cast in May in 2002, it was her role as the title character in McKee’s feature...

Here’s some free advice for producers and financiers working in the movie business: hire Izzy Lee to make your horror movie. A fierce and fiercely independent filmmaker and author with a whole bunch of wild and wildly different short films to her credit, Lee has been poised to make the leap into features for some time now. I, for one, can’t wait for the day that happens.
If you know Izzy Lee or are familiar with her work, you know she’s outspoken and doesn't take any shit. Those are qualities that definitely carry over into her films. Her shorts "Rites of Vengeance," "For a Good Time Call..." and "Innsmouth" (a reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” with an all-woman cast) deal with sexual politics in one form or another, each one critical of whatever status quo on which it is commenting. Her films tend to be socially conscious,...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to a brand new month of streaming! Hard to believe it’s already March, but that just means we have a new slate of VOD and Digital releases to look forward to, and the next few weeks are bringing us a lot of cool entertainment to enjoy at home. Shudder’s March release calendar is chock-full of great films that I heartily recommend genre fans check out, Netflix has a few new offerings that are well worth your time, and Arrow is kicking off March on the right foot with the digital debut of Jill Gevargizian’s The Stylist.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, HBO Max is giving us both Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Godzilla vs. Kong this month as well. We also have a ton of indie horror being released on a variety of platforms throughout March, including Come True,...

Featuring a truly memorable and unexpectedly moving central performance from Townsend (who won the ‘Best Actress’ award from Total Film magazine at the 2020 Arrow Video FrightFest), with support from the excellent Brea Grant (After Midnight), The Stylist is sharply observed and erm, stylishly made. An astute study of loneliness and obsession, Gevargizian takes everyday situations – grabbing a coffee, sending a text, having a haircut, and a girls night out – and imbues them with a deliciously macabre flavour. Be warned though – there’s quite a lot of red stuff flying around and it’s not hair dye!

Dre London, whose London Ent is home to management clients Post Malone and Tyga, is expanding his reach into television, executive producing a new project titled “High Heel.” The crime drama set in Memphis will be produced by the husband-and-wife team of David and Christina Arquette; Post Malone, Tyga and Trinidad James also serve as producers; and Rochée Jeffrey (“Smilf”) has signed on to direct.
According to a synopsis, “High Heel” tells the story of a young woman running from her tormented past, who arrives in Memphis and enters a secret world of drugs, violence and deception when she’s recruited into a ring of female drug runners who smuggle their product under the cover of a luxury women’s footwear brand.
“Expanding into the executive producer role in film and TV is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” London tells Variety. “I wanted to...

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

Brea Grant, at least for me, first came to prominence after appearing in Heroes, the mid-2000s superhero show that took the world by storm for about a season but never truly recovering post-writers strike. Since then she’s appeared in a number of other genre shows and movies, including The Guild, Game Shop, Worry Dolls and Beyond the Gates. The Scream actor and wrestler on Bozo the Clown, Liberace’s shoes and a traumatising moment in Hollywood
Born in Virginia, David Arquette, 49, rose to fame starring in the Scream film franchise. In 2000, he became a professional wrestler. His latest movie is 12 Hour Shift, which is digitally released on 25 January. He has a daughter with Courteney Cox and two sons with his second wife, Christina McLarty. He lives in Nashville and Los Angeles.
When were you happiest?
With time and experience you figure stuff out, so I am happiest right now.

Now here is one dark premise – a nurse who funds her drug addiction by killing her patients and selling their organs. Some may see this as a nod to the organ theft legend of the 1990s, while others may recall the numerous ‘Angel of Death’ cases. Either way, there is always comedy to be found in the darkest of subjects.
The nurse in question is Mandy (Angela Bettis), a misanthrope who lives for smoke breaks and crushed opiates. Bettis does good work here, lending her character a disdainful crabbiness, especially when confronted by her peers’ intrusive small talk. Mandy bides her time until the small hours, when she can continue her lucrative organ trafficking. However, things go awry when she recruits Regina (Chloe Farnworth), her idiotic cousin, to act as a delivery driver.

2020 sucked in so many ways, but nobody told the movies. Here are some of my favorite things from a very, very weird year for all of us.
Color Out of Space (dir. Richard Stanley)
Richard Stanley’s return to directing after too many years away resulted in one of my favorite films of 2020 full stop, containing a great, unhinged performance from my favorite actor Nicolas Cage. It’s a neon-soaked nightmare and features maybe the second most disturbing visual of any movie in 2020; I won’t say what it is except that it involves family bonding. This is a bold, confident film, one that's weird, but never cold and disturbing without the nihilism of, say, Stanley's own Hardware. It's a horror film that's not afraid to go to really big places. It presents us with a true, exciting vision. Richard Stanley is back, and he's brought the best Lovecraft adaptation in 30 years with him.

Happy 2021, everyone! It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with a brand-new edition of our weekly Blu-ray and DVD releases column to kick off this new year. And while we may not have a ton of titles headed home on Tuesday, we do have an excellent bunch of films all the same, including one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters, which hits various formats this week. Another film from last year that I really enjoyed was Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift, which hits both Blu-ray and DVD (and will be available On Demand) tomorrow, and if you have somehow never seen it, I highly recommend picking up the new Blu for Savage Streets, featuring Linda Blair.
Other releases for January 5th include Tintorera… Tiger Shark, From the Depths, Nina of the Woods, and Hacksaw.

The weekend is almost upon as, and as the theatrical schedule remains a barren wasteland until at least the beginning of next year, the weekly onslaught of new VOD releases have arrived to try and entice folks who’ve run out of things to watch on the various streaming services at their disposal that they haven’t seen a handful of times already.
There are a whopping 30 titles flooding the market this weekend, but the bad news is that none of them are what would exactly be called appointment viewing. Pick of the bunch is arguably The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, which sees Francis Ford Coppola return to the closing chapter of his sprawling crime saga and deliver a brand new edit. The early reactions are that he’s greatly improved the original cut, but still not enough to see it enter the rarefied air of the first two installments,...

Luck isn’t with self-help author May Ryer lately. Her books aren’t selling and when a masked intruder breaks into the house she shares with husband no one seems concerned. Even the condescending investigating cop says she’s lucky things didn’t go worse. Brea Grant seems to be on a role when it comes to genre filmmaking, she wrote the fantastic 12 Hour Shift, which screened at Grimmfest earlier this month, and now she’s not only written but also stars in Lucky – which features some similar themes, and shares a musical number (smaller in scope this time round) but...

David Arquette has been quite the busy man these days, as he starred in the film “You Can’t Kill David Arquette” and most recently released the zany thriller “12 Hour Shift” alongside Angela Bettis and Chloe Farnworth. Arquette is also reprising his role as Dwight “Dewey” Riley in the highly anticipated film “Scream 5”. If you are looking for a fun/off-the-wall thriller then “12 Hour Shift” is the film for you! Arquette plays the role of prison inmate Jefferson who is brought to the hospital during one absolutely insane overnight shift! Arquette also serves as a producer on the film. The plot for “12 Hour Shift” is as follows: Over the course of one night in 1998 at an Arkansas hospital, a junkie nurse (Angelia Bettis), her scheming cousin (Chloe Farnworth), and a group of black market organ-trading criminals get caught up in a heist gone wrong. And believe us … things really,...

Thursday’s news that President Trump and several in his orbit have tested positive for coronavirus should probably give one pause before heading to cinemas this weekend — or anytime soon. This thing is contagious, people! And I say that as someone who got Covid-19 myself during an early March trip to Broadway.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t need cinematic distractions, and American distributors continue to deliver. I’ll be headed to the Mission Tiki Drive-in tonight to attend a Beyond Fest double feature.
China closed its theaters long before the U.S., and they’ve reopened them earlier as well, which explains why it has taken this long to get what was supposed to be a major blockbuster timed to the Chinese New Year: “Jiang Ziya,” from the animation studio responsible for “Ne Zha” (which earned nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in 2019). October is here, which means it’s the time of the season for getting scared. With Halloween gradually becoming a month-long celebration over the past few years — even if the coronavirus has put a damper on many activities such as trick-or-treating — one thing we can always look forward to during these 31 days is a deluge of horror movies old and new, whether via streaming, cable network marathons or even fleeting theatrical releases.
Horror is already a reliable genre both at the box office (under normal circumstances) and in the digital space, so it’s no surprise that even in these compromised times, scary movies are coming at us hard and fast in October. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases arriving either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room. 12 Hour Shift is a fine example of a comedy horror that delivers on both fronts. To mark its release we had the pleasure of speaking to (fellow Brit) Chloe Farnworth, who plays a schemer embroiled in the dark and dangerous world of organ-trading.
Chatting to us on Zoom, Farnworth talks about playing an all-American character, and comments on the playful edge to this production. She talks about her research into the role, and on co-stars WWE legend Mick Foley and David Arquette, telling us all about the day the latter brought in a donkey to the set (as you do).

12 Hour Shift (Brea Grant)
Any professional dealing with routine levels of stress and trauma is bound to develop a morbid sense of humor–and the funny horror-comedy 12 Hour Shift might become a cult classic amongst nurses. Written and directed by Brea Grant and set in a small rural hospital in Arkansas in 1999, the film finds cynical ER nurse Mandy (Angela Bettis) about to start what she thinks is a routine twelve-hour shift. Her definition of routine involves a scheme to poison patients with bleach while shift supervisor Karen (Nikea Gamby-Turner) harvests their organs for a local black market dealer. Things don’t go as planned when Mandy’s cousin by marriage,...

It’s finally here! October officially arrives tomorrow, and while I know that we’re all bummed that this year’s Halloween season is going to be very different than usual, we will at least have a ton of genre films heading to VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month to keep you in the spirit as you celebrate the spooky season at home.
Honestly, this is easily the biggest month of digital releases I’ve ever seen in my years of doing this column, which means there is definitely going to be something for everyone to enjoy during the Halloween season. Between all the amazing spooky offerings at Shudder and Netflix this October, plus the rest of the titles that are headed to a variety of other digital outlets, there will still be plenty of Halloween-themed entertainment to enjoy even if we can’t head out to enjoy all...

Organ Trail: Grant Goes Haywire with Oversight on the Overnight Shift
Organ trafficking usually isn’t the focal point of a comedy, even a dark one, which automatically makes actress Brea Grant’s screenwriting and directorial debut 12 Hour Shift a marvel of the grotesque. That she employs Lucky McKee muse Angela Bettis as her beleaguered lead is another reason for the price of admission.
Basically positioning a slasher-tinged genre effort as a comedy of errors, it’s a novel scenario which never quite reaches the heights of its promise, strangely preferring to stay in a certain realm of the demure and diminutive rather than the excessively over-the-top energy it requires for a pay off which should have felt more Grand Guignol than it does.…...

It’s been way too long since we’ve gotten to see Angela Bettis covered in someone else’s blood. The rare actor capable of endowing homicide with the casualness (and passion) of a hobby, Bettis’ endearingly cracked turn in the titular role of 2002’s “May” — Lucky McKee’s modern fable about an introverted loner who quite literally makes a friend from the spare parts she collects from other people — minted her as an indie horror icon. In fact, Bettis was so indelible in the film that it was hard to notice when she fell off the map a bit during the years that followed; some performances lodge a shiv in your brain and leave it there like it always just happened. As a no-nonsense Arkansas ER nurse/black market kidney-dealer in “12 Hour Shift,” Bettis finally gets the material she needs to deliver another one.
Almost certainly the funniest...
Almost certainly the funniest...
