This year, for the first time ever, multiple limited series have each received two simultaneous directing Emmy nominations. These history-making programs – “Beef” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” – are both Netflix productions that have amassed 13 TV academy notices apiece, with this being one of eight categories in which they are directly facing off. While it is true that only one of this category’s previous multi-nominated series actually won, the fact that these two new shows take up a majority of their lineup’s slots might very well yield an unusual result.
Either Netflix series would bring the streaming platform its third limited program directing win, following the success of “Unorthodox” in 2020 and “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021. Also in the running are the category’s first Hulu original movie, “Prey,” and the FX series “Fleishman is in Trouble,” which also hails from a network that has already prevailed here twice.

When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

Carl Franklin was deep into work when he learned of his Emmy nomination — the second in his career — for directing the first episode of Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “I was in New York, as I was doing another pilot on a miniseries, and they knew about it! So someone told me, ‘Hey, man, you’re nominated! And congratulations!'” the director shares with Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I started noticing these texts that were coming in, and then people said, ‘You were nominated for an Emmy!’ And I said, ‘Really?!’ So I hadn’t expected to, so I thought, ‘That’s cool, man, that’s nice.'”
The “Dahmer” opener, “Bad Meat” — which is the only one of the show’s 10 installments that Franklin helmed — presented the director with a very peculiar challenge. The first iteration...

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

The creative team of Astron 6 has completed The Editor. This film had its premiere in 2014, at the Toronto Int. Film Festival. Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

Bad Meat stars Jessica Parker Kennedy from the Kevin Williamson created The Secret Circle, in a low-budget splatter flick, scripted by an Englishman and lensed in Canada, playing a tough-as-nails teenager who, along with a group of her peers (which include Dave “brother of James” Franco amongst their number), are subjected to the indignities of a correctional camp for troubled teens. I say indignities because this camp is run by a Hitler-loving racist camp leader and his merry band of twisted staff, who think of nothing to masturbate each other in the corridors of the camp and piss on their charges to wake them up in the morning!
Bad Meat is, by it’s writers own admission, not an entirely successful film. Apparently shorn of it’s original ending, and...

Lulu Jarmen's ultra gory contagion horror Bad Meat, which had its world premiere at the FrightFest Halloween Allnighter back in 2011, is finally available on DVD in the UK from Kaleidoscope Entertainment, and we have a look at the box art and more here.
Starring Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Elisabeth Harnois (Mars Needs Moms), Jessica Parker-Kennedy ("The Secret Circle"), and Mark Pellegrino ("Supernatural," "Lost"), Bad Meat follows a group of teenage delinquents who contract a deadly virus after being ordered to a remote camp for rehabilitation.
Bad Meat is also available on DVD and VOD in the Us and Canada, where it was recently released by Jinga Films and Mvd.
Compared to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever and Michal J. Bassett's Wilderness, Bad Meat trades in all manner of bodily fluids, puking perverts, a graphic dog dissection, amateur stomach-pumping, chewed body parts, and ripped-off genitals. You Brits enjoy now - Cheerio!

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

The new horror film "Bad Meat" from Revolver Entertainment has been reportedly fraught with production setbacks, including a shift from original director Rob Schmidt ("Wrong Turn") to total newcomer LuLu Jarmen to finish production. Yeah.
Horror movie websites have all posted the trailer, the synopsis, and some images. Some have even referenced the production problems. But no one has even bothered to ask, "Who is LuLu Jarmen?"
Because I'm obsessed with women horror directors (yes, literally obsessed) this is the first question on my mind. "Bad Meat" is her only IMDb credit; she isn't anywhere else on the Internet; no website, no Facebook page, no Twitter account, no bio on IMDb... nothing. So. It's probably just a pseudonym for director Rob Schmidt, because he's so embarrassed by how it turned out that he doesn't want to be blamed for it. You see, he had originally announced the film in 2007/2008 as...

Lulu Jarmen's 'Bad Meat' has a trio of freshly cut stills to feast your meat-eating eyes upon. The flesh-eating comedy horror flick, penned by Paul Gerstenberger, appears at the Afm '11 this week and stars Jessica Parker Kennedy ('In Time'), Elisabeth Harnois ('Miami Medical'), Dave Franco ('Scrubs') and Mark Pellegrino - who always manages to pop up in every one of my favourite TV shows including 'Dexter', 'Lost' and 'Supernatural'. The Canadian production was shot in Winnipeg and has in fact been floating around for quite some time now. You hardcore bastards out there may recall this being Rob Schmidt's ('Wrong Turn') baby at one point back in 2007/2008 but unfortunately the project ran into financial difficulty. But all's well that ends well and you can check out the three new stills below.

Years after locking down Wrong Turn's Rob Schmidt and falling into financial trouble, it appeared that Bad Meat was a doomed project. Quietly the film was completed under the direction of Lulu Jarmen and will world premiere this UK at the Film4 Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter this past October. From Jinga Films, the gore-fest will play at Afm this week in hopes of landing distribution. Hoping to garner attention, a pretty great sales trailer has been released featuring a whole lotta gore! By sheer coincidence I had spent an hour earlier in the afternoon interviewing Jessica Parker Kennedy about her hit TV show, the Kevin Williamson created The Secret Circle, and there she was, wrought big on the screen, now starring in a low-budget splatter flick, scripted by an Englishman and lensed in Canada, playing a tough-as-nails teenager who, along with a group of her peers, are subjected to the indignities of a correctional camp for troubled teens. I say indignities because this camp is run by a Hitler-loving racist camp leader and his merry band of twisted staff, who think of nothing to masturbate each other in the corridors of the camp and piss on...

The indie pic' Bad Meat will be having its World Premiere at the American Film Market. This is a film developed by Rob Schmidt (Wrong Turn), but the director named on the title is Lulu Jarmen; this is likely a pseudoname. This title has recently completed while being developed way back in 2008. There have been some financial hurdles to scramble over and now, the first trailer is available for Bad Meat, along with a film poster.
In this clip, you will laugh, you will gag, and you will likely cry for your mommy, as several delinquent children are chased throughout a "Boot Camp." They are being chased by the camp counsellours who have eaten some rotten meat. This, strangely, turns them into killers. Unfortunately, these kids will have a long jog back to civilization as the camp is located in "the middle of nowhere." Enjoy the disturbing and surreal trailer below.

Yesterday, Mark Pellegrino talked in some detail about his role as Lucifer on the CW hit series Supernatural (TV). Today, in the second half of our exclusive two-part interview, the talented actor sheds admittedly less light on what viewers can expect to see early in the new year when he returns to Lost (TV) as the enigmatic character, Jacob. Damn that Lost veil of secrecy! We also got Pellegrino talking about the upcoming horror film Bad Meat (2009) and even about his skeleton in the closet: the astonishingly awful action-drama on roller blades, Prayer of the Rollberboys (1990), which starred Corey Haim and Patricia Arquette. Lost is one of the most complex and dense series ever produced. Having stepped into the show so late in the game, with your first appearance in the fifth-season finale, "The Incident," how much do you need to understand the Lost universe in order to play a character as enigmatic as Jacob?...

Even as Capitol Films pursues international sales for a slate of movies at Afm this week, legal battles for the men who head the company are heating up.
In the latest salvo, executives behind defunct New York hedge fund D.B. Zwirn, which provided most of the money to David Bergstein and his partner Ron Tutor to make and sell movies, filed suit Monday for reimbursement of about $120 million. That money was used by the pair to acquire Capitol for $30 million and ThinkFilm for $25 million as well as to operate a series of companies and produce movies involving high-profile directors and stars.
Bergstein, whose banner now is Pangea Media Group, and Tutor, the Los Angeles-based millionaire behind Tutor-Saliba, one of the largest U.S. construction firms, provided personal guarantees on the loans that appear to put them on the hook for more than $65 million. That's according to...

Rob Schmidt ( The Alphabet Killer ) is in development on The Abiding for Av Pictures. Stacey Farber and Jonathan Malen ( The Rocker ) are attached to star, says the company's site. Unless Schmidt is in the process of completing Bad Meat , a picture he was in the middle of shooting before production was shut down when the financial backer ran out of funds , Abiding may be his next project to roll. Here's a synopsis from Av: A peaceful American college town turns into a place where no-one is safe and everyone is a suspect. Students and locals begin to receive disturbing emails and phone messages from someone who seems to know a little too much about their private lives. Whenever a victim is contacted, they have no alternative but to kill or be killed. Who is this...

With a third Wrong Turn on the way and Rob Schmidt, director of the original, having his own new film, The Alphabet Killer seeing release soon, those Aussie bastards at Moviehole had to ask Schmidt if he’d consider returning to the series.
”If there was a theatrical release for a Wrong Turn sequel, I reckon Eliza and I would consider it, but the industry is really into direct to consumer sequels right now." he also said it wouldn’t feel the same without producer Stan Winston.
But the chances of that are slim so we’ll just have to hope Schmidt’s next movie, Bad Meat, sees completion soon. ”Bad Meat will be a very disturbing little movie; it's loaded with gore, vomit, and even a bit of anal penetration," Schmidt promises. Now that, fiends, is what I’m talking about.

“This is not a horror movie…” Fangoria has encountered these words many times during its illustrious lifetime—usually spoken by a director trying to pass off a glossy, studio-controlled slasher movie as a “psychological thriller” (i.e. last year’s Prom Night remake). But does anybody ever actually say, “Hey, I can’t wait to see the new psychological thriller that comes out on Friday?”
Of course not—and the audiences that flocked to The Silence Of The Lambs, SE7EN and, yes, even Prom Night paid their entrance fees in the hope of encountering some good old fashioned fear in the dark. Yet when Rob Schmidt, the man who helmed the limb-lopping modern classic Wrong Turn, tells Fango that his new movie The Alphabet Killer (pictured, which reunites him with Turn star Eliza Dushku) does not belong on the genre shelves, we can’t help but become a little bit confused.

Fango recently caught up with Wrong Turn director Rob Schmidt (pictured), whose new serial-murder feature The Alphabet Killer receives limited theatrical play next month from Anchor Bay Entertainment, followed by a DVD debut January 6. Another of Schmidt’s pet projects, the far more gruesome Bad Meat, is currently in limbo, but the filmmaker tells us he hopes to restart shooting on it soon.
“It’s about some folks eating some meat that does not sit with them right,” he says of the film, scripted by Paul Gerstenberger and set at a camp for troubled youths. “They become homicidal maniacs that eat other people. It’s a fun horror movie with some pretty great stuff in it.
“I shot two-thirds of the movie last summer, and we ended things right in the middle of production,” he continues. “A lot of other people’s projects went down at the same time due to a lack of funding,...

Terrible news comes in via Deadline Hollywood this morning as they've reported that the Capitol Films fiasco has taken an even worse turn. A few weeks back it was reported that Rob Schmidt was forced to close shop on hislatest horror film, Badmeat, due to insufficient funding. Capitol Films was supposed to provide the missing dough and has left Schmidt and his crew twiddling their thumbs. No word on what the next step is, but we assume it'll be finished at some point - hopefully a new investor will come in soon! The gore-filled flick will center on troubled teens who send their parents to boot camp, only to find the tables have turned on them.

I'm pretty excited to see Rob Schmidt's two upcoming projects, Alphabet Killer and his latest, Bad Meat, which was currently lensing in Canada for a 2009 release. News hit the web this afternoon that the gore-filled flick (Bad Meat) that centers on troubled teens who send their parents to boot camp, only to find the tables have turned on them, is in a heap of trouble by the Canadian Actra. In short, the film has been shut down. Read on for the skinny.
