Outside a ski lodge, a snowman comes to life for three children. As a couple go on a sleigh ride with a tiger pulling them, a man comes out, watches them, and tries to end the simulation. It doesn't shut down, and the failsafe button disappears when he tries to hit it. The man, Richard Bates, finally wakes up when Kelly injects him. She asks why Richard didn't end the simulation, and Richard tells her that he tried but nothing happened. Kelly explains. Kate assures him that the glitch will be fixed, and Margot comes in and tells Kelly that she can handle the exit interview from there.
Present Day
Supergirl blasts a Dominator down to Dreamer, who wraps him up in her energy coils. When Supergirl flies down, Dreamer reminds her that she has a date. Querl and his DEO agents pull up to take the Dominator into custody, and Querl and Dreamer look at each other. After a moment, Querl awkwardly thanks her and leaves.
Supergirl returns to her apartment where Alex is waiting, and picks out clothing for her date with William. Kara worries that she might have forgotten how to date, and says that Dreamer was on fire. Alex saw the capture on YouTube, and Kara is relieved that someone can fill in for her when she isn't available. The TV news is running a piece on Lex distributing the Obsidian lenses to Qurac, and Kara promises Alex that they'll get Lex out of the DEO and Alex back in where she belongs. She figures Alex misses the DEO, and Alex admits that she does. She assures Kara that she's training with the Martian Hand of the Soldier, but is unable to get it to change shape.
Nia is at home with her roommate Yvette, and Yvette tells her to forget Querl. She says that Nia is going out with her to meet her boyfriend Angus, and admits that she embellishes on Upswipz. Angus calls and Yvette admits that she hasn't met him face-to-face yet.
William takes Kara to Al to play eight-ball, and Kara finally admits that she' only played once. Despite that, she sinks all the balls with one shot.
Yvette takes Nia with her to a club, and Nia has a vision of her hands covered in blood. She goes to the bathroom, and a man overhears Yvette mention Angus. He goes over, and Yvette says that she got a text message from Angus to meet her outside. Yvette goes out, and the man comes out and asks if she found her boyfriend. The man knows all about Yvette's Upswipz profile.
Inside the bathroom, Nia has another vision of the man at a cheap hotel, and a stricken Yvette. She runs out into the alley, beaten, and Yvette says that the man was Angus, and targeted her so she could give a message to Dreamer. The message tells Dreamer, a trans person, to crawl back under the rock she came from or he'll keep attacking people like Dreamer.
The next day, Yvette and Nia have a police detective, Rivers, over. He takes Yvette's description of Angus and says that he'll check when they find something. Kara arrives and wonders why Nia didn't call her, and Nia explains that Angus used Yvette to try to get after her. When Kara says that they'll find Angus, Nia vows to bury him when they do. Surprised, Kara says that Nia should let the police handle it. Nia refuse to back down, telling Kara that it happens more than she could know and there are people like Angus who want them to hide. She figures that there's no way of redeeming Angus, and insists that she's going to take Angus down once and for all. Kara admits that she will never fully understand, but she insists that judge will be served and Nia should give them a chance. Nia gives them a few hours but then she's doing it her way.
Alex meets with John at the Tower and practices with the Hand. It doesn't respond to her thoughts, and John tells her that she has to let the weapon in. He says that it's instinctual and she has to trust the weapon. When Alex snaps at John, John tells her that he knows she is having trouble dealing with leaving the DEO. Alex insists that it's about Lex and his newfound and unearned respect. A client, Al, arrives, and asks them to find his brother Trevor, who has gone missing in the last week. The police found an invitations to a Platinum Obsidian virtual expo in Virtual Las Vegas. Alex figures that Kelly can get her into the expo, while John looks around Al and Trevor's house for clues.
The net day at the DEO, Querl is secretly looking at videos of Dreamer fighting the Dominator. Kara calls and explains that there is someone targeting the trans community trying to get Dreamer to quit. Querl agrees to help track Angus.
Alex meets with Kelly and explains the situation with Trevor. Kelly warns that Alex will feel the VR as well as see it. She warns that everything will fill reveal, and there are no rules inside of Obsidian Platform. Kelly tells Alex how to end the simulation, including the failsafe button, and assures Alex that she'll be able to communicate with her.
Alex enters the VR lobby and sees a list of her experience options taken from her own memories. She finds VR Ve3gas and enters it. She looks for the Escape House that Trevor was going to meet his friends at, and Alex explains to her how to spot the VR simulated people by the data lines on their neck.
John and Al go to Al's house and look in Trevor's room. Al admits that he doesn't know the name of any of Trevor's friends. Al says that for the last few months, all Trevor does is retreat into VR. John checks Trevor's computer and finds the name of two of Trevor's personal friends. He asks for anything of Trevor's that has a personal connection, and Al gives him a wristwatch that he gave to Trevor and Trevor wore until he switched to a smartwatch.
Alex goes into a nearby casino, and asks a waiter where the Escape House. He points out a spooky house on a nearby hill, and Kelly confirms that it's a recent add-on customized by a user. She doesn't know what to expect because it was recently added, and Alex says that she's going in. Inside are people in water tanks, and Alex realizes that it's just like when Malverne tried to drown her. When Alex tries to free them, one of the prisoners says that the end-simulation won't work.
Kelly says that she reported the glitch years ago, and the prisoners could suffer brain damage if they're not freed. Alex turns the Hand into a police club and breaks the prisoners' cage, and Kelly gets the names and locations of the prisoners and works on why the failsafe didn't trigger. One prisoner tells Alex that Trevor and another prisoner, Richard, escaped early and left through a door, and spiders crawled over the other participants and trapped them. Alex confirms that the person who had the idea to pick that escape experience was Richard, and he's new to the group.
Kelly calls John and tells him what happened, and that Richard is involved. John has followed the psychic trail to a house in Opal City, and approaches a woman as she leaves the house.
Nia keeps experiencing the attack on Yvette, and then calls Rivers. Rivers says that they're still investigating, but insists they'll do everything in their power to catch Angus. Nia hangs up, says that she gave the police her chance, and creates an online profile to lure Angus in.
John talks with the woman, Jennifer Bates, who says that she doesn't know Trevor. She says that she's never heard her husband Richard mention Trevor. John realizes that Jennifer is lying, and she says that she's never met Trevor except in VR and it's harmless fun. She says that Richard can sometimes be possessive, and he's a computer engineer. He worries about the technical details, while Jennifer wants to escape. John warns that he has to find Richard and Trevor before they both suffer permanent psychic damage.
Querl finds Nia's profile online. As he studies it, Reiff comes in and tells him that she found over 200 trans hate groups online. Once Querl tells Reiff to leave, he goes back to studying the Nia's profile.
Alex tries to get through the door but fails, and Kelly says that John figures Richard created the escape scenario to trap Trevor, who was having an affair with his wife. She tells Alex to bend the program to her will, not Richard's. Alex uses the Hand to create a key and opens the door. She steps through and finds herself in an empty chamber. Alex loses contact with Kelly, who discovers that Richard created the room to block communications with the outside world.
Kara and William work on a story about trans murders, and Kara wishes they could do more to help. Querl calls and sends Kara Nia's Upswipz profile, and warns that Nia is trying to lure Angus out. Kara says that she'll talk to Nia and thanks Querl, and William tells her that he'll be glad to cover her.
In her apartment, Nia gets a message from Angus and accepts his offer to meet.
Alex finds an imprisoned Trevor, and he tells her that it's happening again as his eyes glow red. He begs her to make it stop, explodes, and then reforms. Trevor tells Alex that no matter what he does, he randomly blows up and the pain is horrible. Richard comes in as Trevor starts to explode again. They fight and Alex loses the Hand. When Richard tries to end Alex's simulation, she refuses to leave without Trevor and Richard advances on her. Alex pulls the gun to her and knocks him out, and Richard wakes up in the real world. John finds him and knocks him down, and Richard sees John flicker in and out of VR.
Alex tells Trevor that he controls the reality, and he stops himself from blowing up. He gives Alex his location at a hotel so she can save his body, and ends the simulation. She wakes up in the VR lab and tells Kelly what happened, and calls John to give him Trevor's address. John is with Richard, and is unable to bring him out of his coma.
Angus is waiting for Nia, and Dreamer confronts him in the alleyway. He says that Dreamer isn't the right kind of role model, and someone has to stand up to trans people. Angus draws a knife and attacks her, and Dreamer easily knocks him down. When he runs off, Dreamer lassos him with an energy whip. He says that she makes him sick, and heroes are supposed to be virtuous but she's lying. Dreamer figures that his ego was shattered.
Supergirl arrives and tells Dreamer to stop, saying that she won her fight. When Dreamer wonders why she should let Angus live, Supergirl tells her not to stoop to Angus' level. Supergirl admits that she can't promise Angus will get justice, but assures Dreamer that she has help from her and all of her friends. She says that they will all have their eyes open for people like Angus. After a moment, dreamer drops her energy lasso and tells Angus that he's going to prison and when he gets out, she'll watch him and give him a nightmare he will never wake up from.
Later at CatCo, Kara sees Nia crying out on the balcony. She goes to her friend , and Nia says that she almost murdered someone and still wants to. She tells Kara that she's overwhelmed and Angus triggered everything, and explains that she had a dream flash of Angus attacking Yvette, and couldn't save Yvette just like she couldn't save her mother. Nia talks about how her powers is predictable and her friend looked at her like she was beautiful, and it broke her heart. Kara hugs her and says that she wishes she had answers, and Nia says that when Angus attacked her community, she snapped. At least it was something she could control and protect someone. Kara says that she's felt that anger before, but wasn't looking at things through Nia's experienced. She admits that sometimes being the good guy, and apologizes for not knowing how much pain was in. Crying, Nia hugs Kara.
At Al's, Alex and Kelly agree that virtual cheating isn't acceptable. Kelly admits that there are open questions about ethics and morality in the virtual world that aren't unresolved. She insists that what she doing helps people, and wonders why the glitch she reported when unfixed. Trevor comes in and thanks Alex for saving his life, and Alex introduces him to Kelly.
Nia returns to her apartment and tells Yvette that Angus is going to prison for a long time. Yvette deletes all of her social media accounts, and says that she's done leaving herself vulnerable. She figures that Angus wasn't the only one, and she wanted someone to care about her but it wasn't true. Nia assures her that she'll find it eventually but not if she shuts down, and says that they have to shine brighter so others don't erase them. She tells Yvette that she's a beautiful woman, and sharing her life is what will change the world.
Querl gives the evidence he's accumulated against Angus, aka Gregory Bauer, to Rivers. He's identified the members of Trevor's trans hate group, and says that the DEO takes threats against their sister superheroes very seriously.
Alex spars with John and discovers the Hand still won't respond to her thought. He says that she has to give it time and they'll spar the next day. Alex's mom calls and says that there's a problem.
Later, Alex goes to Kara's apartment and tells her that they found Jeremiah and he's dead.
Kelly looks at the comatose Richard. After she leaves, Margot has him taken to a room full of other comatose VR users.
