Japanese police on Wednesday formally charged 42-year-old local man Shinji Aoba with murder relating to the arson attack in July last year at Kyoto Animation.
The blaze, set using gasoline, killed 33 people on the scene and three more in hospital. A further 33 were injured.
The charges include murder, attempted murder, arson, trespass and breach of the arms-control law, the Kyoto prosecutor’s office said.
Aoba was himself burned and was arrested quite quickly after the shocking attack. He appeared to make a confession in which he said he was angry with the firm for stealing some of his ideas. The firm often known as KyoAni, operates a competition soliciting draft novels, but has consistently denied that it used Aoba’s.

Based on the highly successful series of light novels written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase, Haruka Fujita’s anime tells a side-story to the anime series which is currently screening on Netflix. In interviews, the director, who is also involved in the series, states how it was the tone of the novels along with the character of Violet Evergarden that inspired him to take on the project. Even though the character seems emotionless at some points, there are, especially when drawing her, multiple layers to be uncovered, making her a character you can “open up to”, as Fujita explains. For those unfamiliar with the series, “Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll” does not heavily rely on any knowledge of the series or indeed the novel, as its blend of fairy tale motives, drama and period piece will draw any viewer rapidly into the world the film has to offer.

Japanese police have arrested Shinji Aoba, the man suspected of the arson attack on Kyoyo Animation last July. The arrest came after he was judged sufficiently recovered from his own burn injuries to face scrutiny.
The blaze at the animation production studio killed 36 people and injured another 33.
Aoba was found near the scene and apparently has admitted to setting the fire. “There is no mistake,” the police quoted him as saying. Aoba is said to have accused the studio of stealing his ideas.
In a life-threatening condition for months, Aoba received multiple skin grafts at a hospital in Osaka. He was later sent to a hospital in nearby Kyoto in November for rehabilitation.
Police previously intended to arrest him in January, but he was too ill. He has now been taken to a Kyoto police station for interrogation.

Netflix has confirmed that 58 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in April. Leading off the lineup are season 2 of the Ricky Gervais serio-comic series “After Life” and the debut of Mindy Kaling‘s childhood memoir “Never Have I Ever.” And in these trying times, take comfort in the slew of comedy specials, including one pairing “Silicon Valley” leading man Thomas Middleditch and “Parks and Recreation” scene stealer Ben Schwartz.

Now that we’re self-isolating at home to help defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, this may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things that have been in our Netflix watchlist for a long while.
The novel coronavirus, a mutated strand from the family of coronaviruses, originated from Wuhan, China late last year, but currently, every single country in the world is battling the outbreak. As of now, more than 714,000 people have contracted the disease and 33,617 have passed away due to severe cases of acute respiratory syndrome. In the Us alone, more than 139,000 patients have been identified and approximately 158 million people are under lockdown across all 50 states. While the ramifications of the Covid-19 may have dealt the world of economics an unprecedented blow, business models like Netflix have profited from people spending more time at home with little to do.
Now, obviously, the platform has enough TV shows and movies...

Data in the server on the first floor of the fire-ravaged Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) studio has been recovered intact, according to Japanese media reports. The recovered data include digitized key animation drawings.
The server was surrounded by four concrete walls that shielded it from fire and water damage. A lawyer for KyoAni, Daisuke Okeda, told the media: “Data recorded on the server has been recovered without loss.” He offered his “heartfelt thanks” to the unnamed specialists who had saved the data.
The deliberately set fire on July 18 ravaged the three-story studio building, killing 35 employees and injuring 33. Their PCs and paper drawings were all destroyed in the blaze.
The already-completed “Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll,” a spinoff film from the studio’s “Violet Evergarden” franchise, will screen in limited release from Sept. 6 to 26 in Japan.
