- Noah, Claire, Angela, and Meredith find themselves trapped at the Primatech by Sylar who locks them in the building and subjects them all to various mind games. Meanwhile, Matt, Daphne, and Ando seek refuge at the Mendez loft where Daphne plans to steal a sample of the power-giving formula to give to Ando who wants to rescue the powerless Hiro still trapped 16 years in the past, who continues to struggle to find his true origins with his younger self. Back in the present, Peter faces off against Nathan, Tracy and the security detail at Pinehurst to stop Mohinder from reproducing the formula, and finds allies in the form of Knox as well as Flint who also want to stop the production of the formula, leading to a fiery showdown for all.—Anonymous
- "Heroes" - "Chapter Thirteen: Dual" - Dec. 15, 2008
After a quick recap of the good guys and the bad guys and how they got that way (via a Sylar voice-over) we cut to Pinehearst, where Nathan is kneeling over his dead father and Peter has a gun in his hand. Nathan thinks Peter did it but he says he only tried -- it was Sylar who actually delivered the bullet. Peter says they need to destroy the formula. But Nathan says he's going through with their dad's plan and ten Marines have already been injected with it. Peter says he knows Nathan believes he's doing the right thing, but he's not. Nathan disagrees and says he wonders if he will soon by lying by his father. They stand and Peter points the gun at him. Nathan tries to talk him down, and seems to almost succeed: Peter starts to hand over the gun. At the last moment, however, he punches Nathan out instead, and cocks his weapon.
At Primatech HRG is grabbing weapons and rounding up a posse to help Peter including Meredith, Claire, and Angela. They walk into Angela's office and see two dead security guys. We get a quick flash of Sylar, who then telekinetically shuts all the exit gates and kills the lights. We cut to him in the security room overlooking a bank of monitors. He intones over the intercom that Arthur is dead by his hand, "just like mommy wanted." He says he knows that they're frightened of him and see him as a monster, but that they did this to him. But, he tells them, by the end of the night he's going to prove to them one by one that they're all monsters like him.
The posse heads down the dark hallway. HRG hands a gun to Claire, saying she has six shots and to keep Angela safe at all costs. HRG takes Meredith with him. Angela wonders if they think they can really stop Sylar. Claire says they can, and that even though he has the same healing ability as she does and she knows a spot on the back of her head that if you jab something into it, it shuts off her brain and shuts her down. They seem impressed by this knowledge (forshadowing anyone?) Sylar comes back on the intercom, saying that he and Claire are most alike since they can't be damaged, except for a broken heart -- and that's what parents give us. She says she's nothing like him, a sick bastard. He says he will prove just how wrong she is.
HRG busts into the security room and swivels the person in the chair around to reveal another dead security guy. Over the intercom Sylar says HRG isn't hunting him, but that Sylar is the hunter.
We catch up with Hiro still hanging on the flagpole 16 years ago in New York. He's explaining his failings to a pigeon.
Ando, Daphne, and Parkman walk and talk in the present. Ando says it's up to him to save Hiro. Parkman wonders how much trouble he could get into without powers. Daphne points out he could change the future by oh, say, dying. Parkman is not amused by this train of thought. They enter Mohinder's now empty loft, and wonder where he is. Ando is freaking out, saying he needs the formula. Daphne says he's probably at Pinehearst. Parkman says it's too dangerous. Daphne scowls at him and speeds off.
We cut to Mohinder's lab, where he is talking into his dictaphone. He's telling it that the infection he got from his power has spread to his lungs and he's running out of time. He's going to inject himself with the new formula in hopes of changing his fate. Just as he's about to inject himself Peter enters pointing his gun at him, telling him to put down the syringe. Peter intends to destroy the formula. Mohinder argues he needs it to save his life. Daphne speeds by and grabs it out of Mohinder's hand so fast that neither he nor Peter sees her.
Mohinder pushes Peter across the room, and Knox and Flint enter. Flint threatens to burn Mohinder's face off as payback. Knox calls a time out. He says that he and Peter have similar goals and that he wants to trash the place too. He knocks (Knox knocks, hee) over a shelving unit. Peter wonders why they would help him, and Flint explains that if they make the formula, those with powers already wouldn't be so special anymore. Knox really does not like the idea of a world full of special beings. Mohinder begs him to think of the good they could do with Nathan's plan. Peter replies that Nathan is no longer in charge. Peter knocks over the table with the formula on it.
Out in the hall the newly em-powered Marine is waking up Nathan. Nathan tries to sic him on Peter but Knox comes out and breaks his neck. Knox tells Nathan he's working for Peter since Peter is one of the good guys now.
Back at Mohinder's loft Daphne returns with the formula. Ando grabs it. Parkman says their plan is insane and that since Ando doesn't know what power he will get, there's no way to be sure he'll be able to time-travel. Daphne stops him, saying he was always worried about what people thought of him and now he can read minds. She wanted to run and now she's fast. (I guess she's saying it will make Ando whatever he really wants.) Parkman points out that it turned Mohinder into a freak. Ando tells him to have faith and injects himself. He promptly passes out.
Hiro shimmies himself down the flagpole and gets himself upright. He then pulls himself over the balcony. He calls out a hello to no response. He comes into the living room and encounters his younger self. Young Hiro wants to know why Future Hiro - who he still thinks is the chef- is so sad. Future Hiro says he failed his father. Young Hiro points out that his mom always says if you can fix it today you won't have to worry about tomorrow. Future Hiro gets an idea and says they have to go find a piece a paper his father has with some numbers on it. Young Hiro worries about getting in trouble. Future Hiro says Young Hiro can help save the future. They nod.
Back at Primatech the phones are dead. Claire pouts. Angela says they're only giving Sylar what he wants: attention, like a tantrum-throwing child. Now the phones aren't dead as one rings and Sylar comes on telling Claire there is a way to stop all this: Claire, HRG, and Meredith can go if she will shoot Angela in the head. He says Angela's not even worth protecting: she wanted to blow up NYC, kill Arthur, and lied to Sylar about being his mother. Or she can trade Angela for HRG. Claire wonders why he's doing this. Sylar says to ask HRG about what he and Elle did to him and points out that he could've been a nobody, instead of the monster he became. He reveals that Elle is now dead, and says HRG will be next if she doesn't shoot Angela. Claire says if Sylar hurts HRG she will hunt him down and kill him. He points out that she's gone from cheerleader to stone cold killer and wonders who's the monster now? She ratchets the gun as she advances towards Angela, then shoots the phone and replies "You are."
HRG enters Level 5 and Meredith calls him crazy. He says he needs help. Several inmates, now free due to the power outage, advance as HRG and Meredith point guns at them. The puppet master is one of them, he's excited to see Meredith. HRG says the first one to bring him Sylar's head wins their freedom. Puppet man wonders what's to keep them from just escaping. HRG says Sylar: He's locked the place down, so nobody's getting out. They wander off. Meredith says they don't stand a chance. HRG tells her to think about what you need to catch a shark. She realizes the inmates are bait.
Peter's doing his best wrecking ball routine at Mohinder's lab as the scientist points out the formula is combustible. Flint doesn't care, he can't be burned. Mohinder begs Peter to take a look at who his associates have become: thugs and killers. Flint knees him in the chest and then flings him against a wall, knocking him out. Peter checks him, saying Knox didn't have to do that. Knox points out that they can now destroy things more quickly.
Ando wakes up to a glass of water in his face wondering if he has abilities. Daphne says that the only thing that's apparent is that he can pass out real well. Ando sits up and starts flailing his arms repeating. "I am the master of time and space." Daphne says to squint like Hiro. It doesn't work. He tries harder but nothing happens. He bangs his hand in frustration and shoots off red sparks. They realize his power is not time travel.
Back at Primatech Meredith is roaming the halls, flashlight and gun in hand. She comes across a still moving arm, not with its owner. She then happens upon a busted up supply closet, out of which rolls a bottle of adrenaline. She turns as Sylar says adrenaline can start a dead heart. He whips away her gun and light. He's about to do something else to her as the puppet master turns the corner hands out "controlling" Sylar by moving his limbs saying Meredith is his to love, and his to kill. Sylar wonders if the puppet master really thinks he can control him and works his mind mojo. The puppetmaster's nose starts bleeding, and he collapses. Meanwhile Meredith has regained her gun but as she turns Sylar jabs her chest with a syringe, and she falls to the floor.
HRG is back on Level 5 and finds Meredith hopped up on adrenaline and cowering in a cell, unable to control her fire. She keeps errantly shooting it at him as she tells him to get away from her. He turns to leave, but Sylar is outside -- and locks him in with her. He reminds HRG that the glass is bulletproof, and that he's trapped HRG with Meredith, and one bullet in his gun. Sylar says it shouldn't be too hard for HRG to kill Meredith, but then he asks HRG how he's going to tell Claire he killed her bio-mom. Sylar points out that HRG helped make him who he is, now he's returning the favor. Sylar walks away and HRG regards the increasingly combustible Meredith with fear.
At Pinehearst Knox watches over Nathan who is telling him that he's backing the wrong horse. Nathan points out that everyone always roots for Peter but that he ends up losing. Knox points out at the moment Peter is winning. Nathan asks him to define winning. Knox says he must really hate his brother, but Nathan explains that he feels sorry for him. Knox wonders why he's so afraid, then. Nathan says he isn't afraid of anyone and bashes Knox in the head with a paper weight. Knox fights back, and just when he appears to be on the verge of killing Nathan, Tracy appears and freezes him into pieces. Bye Bye Knox.
Ando is walking around with his hands electrocuting things accidentally. He grabs Parkman's arm and Parkman freaks for a moment. When he regains his composure he says that the zap was like an explosion in his head allowing him to hear the thoughts of everyone in the city. Daphne hits Ando's shoulder asking what he did and disappears. She reappears on the other side of the room and watches the entire previous exchange and then her old body catches up with her new one. She thinks Ando somehow sent her back in time. (So he's some kind of power amplifier?)
HRG is cowering away from Meredith's fire. Sylar transmits images of this to a laptop that Claire can see. She wants to save them. Angela calmly and dispassionately says he's just showing them that because he wants to lure them into his trap. Claire says she doesn't care and forces Angela to walk with her. They go down a hallway hand and hand until they hear a noise. Claire rounds a corner gun held up and then reaches back to grab a hand. This time it's Sylar's. He disarms her and pins her against a wall by her neck and tells her to choose between HRG and Angela. He says he knows she'll pick her dad, even after all the lies he's told her and the ways he's neglected her. He drops her and she runs to Level 5.
HRG gives her the code to unlock the cell's door, but Sylar has ripped out the door panel. Meredith says she can't hold on. HRG tells Meredith to take her hands and direct her heat at the glass. She does this, and weakens it. HRG shoots his last bullet and cracks the glass, but it doesn't break. Family team work time! Claire bounds through the glass and pulls a large, knife-like shard out of her back. Ouch. HRG jumps out, but Meredith begs off telling Claire to run and stop Sylar. Claire says she will come back for Meredith.
Nathan and Tracy try to devise a plan. She wants out from Pinehearst, and calls the situation still deniable, telling him that he can't be associated with it. She then suggests that they can take the formula and start over with their own rules. He says he can't run away. Tracy says she's just being a realist, which is why he hired her. Nathan then fires her.
Parkman, Ando, and Daphne are working out Ando's amplification- or as they call it "super-charging"- powers. It hinges on Einstein's theory of relativity, which is great, but Ando is simply psyched to have a power. Daphne works out that if she keeps running and he keeps zapping her they can travel backwards in time together. Parkman is worried that Ando will zap them back to the Stone Age, but Daphne says they'll be back before he knows it. She grabs Ando's hand and they disappear.
Sixteen years ago: The Hiros are grabbing the formula from Kaito's safe as Kaito walks in, wondering what's up. Future Hiro says they were playing. Kaito sends young Hiro to bed as he sees the safe is open. Kaito grabs a sword and confronts Future Hiro about the formula. Hiro tries to explain that if they destroy it tonight it can't be used. Kaito is unmoved and Hiro rips the formula in half. As Kaito is about to run him through Daphne and Ando speed him away back to Mohinder's loft in the future. The formula is left behind in pieces. Parkman is impressed. Ando explains that he has powers now. Hiro wishes they could've saved him a little later, since he was destroying the formula. (Of course if that was the case, Ando wouldn't have powers and couldn't have saved him, oh that wacky space time continum!) Ando tells him to remind him never to save his life again. Hiro says they have to destroy the formula. Daphne says she knows where it is. Hiro says his nemesis now has a chance to make up for her past, as does he, and asks her to take him to it. Daphne says he's right and, grabbing him, says "Back in a flash!"
They pop up behind Tracy who is stealing the formula from a safe she's cracked with her freezing power. Hiro says it must be destroyed. She disagrees. He punches her, grabs it and he and Daphne speed off.
Flint and Peter are STILL busting up Mohinder's lab. They topple an especially big vat of formula which spills over onto Mohinder, wakes him, and instantly seems to cure him of his scales. (Why didn't Mohinder think of that?!) Flint goes to fire the place up. Peter says they have to get the people, including his brother, out of the building. Flint says he doesn't care about Nathan, or Peter for that matter, and turns to fire him up when Nathan enters and whacks him with a pipe. Nathan then attacks Peter, tells his kid brother than he's broken his heart. Flint is pissed and sets fire to the floor. Peter cries out to stop him. Nathan is surrounded on all sides by flames. (Why doesn't he just fly over them??) Peter grabs a syringe of formula and injects it into his thigh. (Thinking he'll get a new power, or perhaps his old ones back, to save Nathan?) It takes hold immediately and Peter grabs Nathan and flies him out the window.
Back at Primatech, Angela tells Sylar he saved the world by killing Arthur, and that she was right about him all along -- he is a hero. Sylar says, "I don't think so." She says she always wanted this for him, dreamed about it and now that Arthur's gone there's no one left to hold him back or manipulate him. He pushes her into a chair and angrily says, "Except you!"
Angela says she gave him guidance and cared for him like a mother. He asks if she really is. She says she's not. He says for a brief moment he wished she was. He wonders why she did it. She said because her sons were a disappointment to her and wanted another chance to give the love only a mother can. His lie detector goes off and he starts slicing her head open. He stops. Under duress, Angela tells him the truth: she thought his skill would be an asset to the company. He asks if she saw him as a hero. She smiles and says no, she saw him as a killer, a monster. Since he was flawed, weak, and malleable, she could manipulate him because that's what she does -- because she's a monster too. He whirls around and holds up his threatening finger while telekinetically choking her asking if there's any good in this world, to tell him anything that will make him believe she's not the same as him. She says she knows who his real parents are and he lets her go. He asks where they are. She says if he kills her he'll never find out. As he begins choking her again he screams at her to tell him the truth.
Angela is at the point of passing out when Claire sneaks up behind Sylar and, using the shard of glass she pulled out of her back, hits just the right spot in the back of his head. (Wow, we DID see that again) He falls forward incapacitated, and the lights come back on. HRG enters, saying they have to go. Claire tells him to get Angela out and goes back for Meredith. Meredith can't control herself for much longer and tells Claire to go. Claire pleads with her, saying she can save her. HRG shows up and says when Meredith lets go the whole building will come down in flames. Claire calls out, "I love you mom." Then she and HRG jet as Meredith explodes in a fireball that chases them down the hallway.
Nathan and Peter make a bumpy landing in a field. Nathan freaks that Peter took the formula, ranting that it's supposedly everything Peter is against. Peter argues he had no other choice. Nathan wonders why he saved him, and Peter replies it's because Nathan is his brother, and he loves him. Nathan says that's not what he would've done, and flies away. Peter calls after him.
Mohinder returns via voiceover, saying that there are heroes and villains, good and evil and there are places where we can glimpse light between the cracks of the two. He continues, we wait in silence for these times when sense can be made and we realize that everyone has both good and evil inside them. We see Mohinder walking on the side of the road. A car pulls over to pick him up and he sees in the window a reflection of his scale-free face. Daphne and Hiro return with the formula. Angela, Claire, and HRG watch Pinehearst burn.
Back with Mohinder, the car window goes down and it's Tracy, who picks him up. Hiro rips up the formula and as Daphne and Parkman embrace, Hiro and Ando nod. Parkman looks up and sees his African spirit guide.
The End of Volume Three...
..and the start of Volume Four: "Fugitives"
We cut to a limo in Washington, D.C. Inside is Nathan- we are told it's three weeks later- and he's saying their only option at this point is to get the U.S. government involved. A man in the limo is leafing through a dossier that includes pictures and profiles of all the major players and their powers -Tracy, Mica, Hiro, Parkman- as Nathan tells him he had a solution, but it didn't work. What Nathan wants to do now is round up the super-powered and put them in a facility where they won't be a danger to anyone. The man says the government will give Nathan the resources that he needs. Nathan responds with, "Thank you Mr. President." He gets out of the limo.
To Be Continued...
The presumed death tally: Knox, Flint, Meredith, the puppet man, Elle
Still with us: Angela, Claire, HRG, Peter, Nathan, Hiro, Ando, Parkman, Mica, Daphne, Mohinder, Tracy, and maybe Sylar. (You know that with his regeneration powers, the fire probably fixed his brain problem.)
A final thought: How much do you want to bet that the President has a superpower?
