- Ricky wants to meet his grandfather, but finds that Edward has no interest in seeing his father - an attitude that is definitely mutual. Knowing how important it was for him to know his father, Ricky devises a plan to reconcile the two.
- Ricky is watching Edward play a game of chess against a computer opponent when Leonard walks in and tells Edward his father wants him to sign a proxy ballot. Edward asks Leonard how he wants him to vote, and Leonard says he wants Edward to vote yes. Edward says he'll vote no - the opposite of what his father wants - and Ricky suggests that Edward research the background behind the vote first, then make his decision. Edward asks Leonard what the vote is about, and Leonard says that Edward's father wants to relocate his lug nut factory from the U.S. to Taiwan. The move would put many workers out of a job, and the major stockholders are split, so Edward has the deciding vote.
Edward asks Leonard to get him as much information about the issue as possible so he can make an informed decision. Ricky asks if they can see his grandfather, Edward's father, but Edward tries to discourage him, which rapidly turns into a tirade about how his father constantly neglected him while doing his business deals. Kate walks in to tell Edward he has a phone call. After he leaves, Ricky asks Kate for his grandfather's address, saying he wants to see him. Kate tries to discourage him, but he eventually convinces her into giving it to him.
Ricky visits his grandfather, Edward Stratton II, finding him in the middle of filling out paperwork. At first his grandfather refuses to believe he has a grandson, thinking Ricky is only after his money. Ricky says he guesses what his dad said was true - that his grandfather is an old buzzard. Edward II asks his grandson what his mother's name is, and Ricky says Evelyn. Edward II sits his grandson down for a talk, saying he thought his own father, Edward I, who founded the family business, got lucky. He found both his father's and son's rather cavalier attitude toward money aggravating, as he felt that money should only be used to make more money.
Ricky mentions that his dad didn't have any photos of his grandfather, but Edward II brushes it off. Ricky then says he feels sorry for his grandfather - that it's almost as though his dad doesn't have a father, and his grandfather doesn't have a son. He adds that he went without his dad for 12 years and really missed him, and can't believe his grandfather doesn't miss his son. After Ricky exits, Edward II flips his portrait to reveal one of his father, who looks like Edward - only with a mustache.
Later, Ricky is delighted when his grandfather drops by, but Edward II says it's strictly for business. Ricky's dad enters and says that his isn't signing the proxy. He notes that if they keep the factory in the U.S., it will cost approximately $500,000 a year, which Edward II is loath to accept. Edward III says he will vote to relocate the factory only if his father helps the U.S. employees find new jobs, and his father reluctantly agrees.
With the proxy signed, Edward II turns to leave, but Ricky persuades him to stay and talk to his son. The meeting turns awkward, as Ricky's father and grandfather initially refuse to speak to each other. When they do start talking, they fling verbal barbs at each other. Edward III says he's running a toy company, which his father criticizes. The discussion rapidly escalates into an argument when Edward II criticizes his son's educational and business decisions.
Ricky intervenes, asking why his dad and grandfather are arguing. He tries to get them to mend their differences, but they refuse. Ricky says he's not going to miss out just because they can't get along, saying he likes his grandfather and loves his father. They finally agree to get along, even if only for Ricky's sake.
Ricky's grandfather invites him to meet with the New York Yankees' owner, George Steinbrenner. When Edward III says that his father never invited him to any ball games, Ricky whispers to his grandfather, who reluctantly invites Edward III. Ricky's dad eagerly accepts and runs out the door. Ricky suggests to his grandfather that he's sure it's just a phase.
