Laurel & Hardy were the second of two old-time comedy teams that appeared on this show. As with the Three Stooges of Ghastly Ghost Town (1972), they were voiced by other people, in this case because the real men had both died some time previously: Oliver Hardy in 1957, and Stan Laurel in 1965.
The real Oliver Hardy's middle name was Norvell. This was the basis for Shaggy Rogers' real first name being Norville, as introduced in A Bicycle Built for Boo! (1988).
Ollie tells Stan "Well, this is another fine mess you've gotten us into." The real Oliver Hardy more frequently said to Stan Laurel, "This is another nice mess you've gotten me into." Although used the "fine" catchphrase less frequently, it has become more popular in culture.
Ollie reads Stan a storybook of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to calm his nerves.
Though the real Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy had both passed, the characters are given some authenticity by Larry Harmon and Jim MacGeorge reprising their roles as Stan and Ollie respectively from the then recent Hanna-Barbera series A Laurel and Hardy Cartoon (1966), which Harmon co-produced having owned the likeness of the two comedians for merchandising purposes. The characters of Stan and Ollie in this episode however are based on the real life Laurel and Hardy featuring more human proportions. rather than the more caricatured drawings of them seen in the aforementioned cartoon series (which were based on the likenesses Harmon had used for his merchandising, toys and comics, etc.).
