- Major Case searches for a serial killer, Grace deals with the chauvinist detective who's attached to the case, both Grace and Ham adjust to new partners, and Earl tries to reach Leon who's moved his execution forward.
- Grace says good morning to Gus (the dog) and Earl (the angel). She's on her way to see Ham, who Earl tells her found his way into a church in North Carolina. Earl has a word with Gus (yes, the dog), telling him Grace is, essentially, a handful. Earl finds Grace's box of research on Leon Cooley. His soul depends what Grace does next.
Grace shows up at Ham's. Its 4:30 a.m., as he requested. He's coming back to work today after his brother's death. Grace is partnered with a patrol officer doing a 28 day rotation. Ham will be partnered with Butch. She's not happy about it, but if it's what he needs, she'll do it. He wants her to take a ride with him. She smokes a cigarette while Ham showers. She uses a Bud can as an ashtray. Ham comes out and tells her they're going to scatter his brother's ashes on an ice rink they used as kids. His ashes are in the beer can.
Ham says hi to Butch at work. He's still carrying the can -- the ice rink is an apartment complex now. They want to know where Bobby is. All they know is he's undercover somewhere. Grace's new temporary partner Abby Charles is late on her first day.
They have a female body to investigate. Capt. Perry will send Abby on when she gets there.
Grace goes to the scene. A woman is dead in the middle of the road. A man in a ballcap watches from afar. The woman has fancy manicured nails but is mostly naked. One of her breasts was cut off, an implant. Ham goes to get names of the people watching. Rhetta shows up. Abby is her husband's cousin.
Abby shows up and Grace immediately chews her out. Abby starts crying. "You don't cry at a crime scene!" Grace says.
Earl visits with Leon, who is ignoring him. He asked his execution date be moved up. It's three months away. Earl tells Leon about his son Benjamin, who is smart and trying out for football. Leon doesn't reply, but cries quietly.
Abby brings Grace coffee at the station. Abby researches the victim's tie, rare and expensive. Grace finds another victim that matches. She busts out the cigars. They've got a serial killer.
The previous victim also had a vintage tie and breast implant cut off. Henry the coroner says that Luanne, the second victim, was strangled twice. He invites Abby to attend an autopsy.
The detective on the previous case, Walter, drops in, sending Abby for coffee and generally exuding obnoxious sexism.
Ham and Butch interview Luanne's husband, not quite in investigative rhythm. She didn't come home from yoga last night. Both victims shopped at the same market. They lived in different area. The wonder if they had the same plastic surgeon. Walter asks Abby for crackers and she finally tells him he can get his own stuff. She also tells Grace why she was late: her goldfish died. Her son was upset. She wants to be an FBI agent and is taking law classes.
Ham says Luanne's car was impounded that morning. They're going to talk to the security guard who called it in. Grace and Ham have a whole conversation without saying much. Abby's heard of Grace, and that another officer partnered with her quit. Grace says that guy didn't have the heart of a cop.
Ham and Butch talk to the security guard, talking over each other during questioning. They walk to the truck after, both irritated that their different styles are clashing.
Abby tells Grace that the plastic surgeon, Dr. Kaiser, was doing a nose job and has an alibi. Abby following up with the ties and has found a collector.
They're getting nowhere with the doctor's patient list and the connection at the store isn't solid. Perry wants to do a stakeout at the store, but Abby can't because she has a 12-year-old at home (she was 16 when she had him).
Grace goes to the plastic surgeon's office. The receptionist swears the doctor couldn't have had anything to do with it.
Grace comes home and finds the box on Leon that Earl put out for her. But she's starting in on the current case instead, putting up all the photos on the fireplace.
Earl drops in as Grace puzzles it out. She thinks the killer is enjoying it. Earl warns her to be wary of evil. There's a knock at the door. It's her blonde sister Paige, freaked because she heard a report about the killer targeting blondes on the news. The news mentioned the market. Grace goes after her sister with a tie and they end up in a pillow fight. Grace hears an alert on the police scanner. She grabs her gun and leaves.
The gang's all at the scene. Grace thinks she knows who leaked it. Walter shows up and starts mocking the latest victim's real breasts. Butch and Ham shut him up. Henry says the victim was alive when her breast was cut off.
Ham recognizes one of the onlookers.
Grace takes Walter aside and asks him why he leaked it, she turns on him when he tells her to get her hormones under control. She chicken wings him off the crime scene, threatening to break his arm if he doesn't leave.
Ham talks to the man in the ballcap, Kirby. He likes crime scenes. They find a camera in his hat.
Paige wants to stay with Grace longer. The murder is in the papers. Grace finds that Paige borrowed her back-up gun. She finds it and chews her out.
Rhetta signs out files and sees Grace's name next to Leon's file. She looks through it and finds a suicide note.
Abby wants to talk to Rhetta. She thinks Grace doesn't like her. Abby wants to know if she can patch things up with Grace. Rhetta tells her to just work hard.
Ham and Butch talk to Kirby again. He's a fan of the craft of murder. They found boxes and tapes and tons of research on serial killers. They even found a bloody scalpel.
Abby found that the latest victim had a tummy tuck a few years ago, same doctor. Shes chatting with the victim's best friend online. Grace is impressed.
The boys like Kirby for the murders, but Grace wants to stay on the doctor.
Rhetta tells Grace the blood on Kirby's scalpel isn't human. Then she asks her about Leon's file. The suicide note belonged to the woman Leon hit with his car. He was drunk, but she stepped in front of him. Grace says it doesn't matter, he also killed a prison guard.
Grace isn't going to drop her serial killer case to help Leon. But Rhetta says Grace would be in Leon's spot if Earl hadn't helped her. She can't ignore it.
Earl talks to Leon, who's still ignoring him. Earl says Job did the same thing. Earl outlasted him, too.
Ham and Butch watch Kirby's crime scene videos. They find a video of Donald, the security guard who called in the second victim's abandoned car. He had no reason to be at the earlier scene. He's the killer.
Meanwhile, Grace and Abby go visit the doctor's receptionist again. She has died her hair blonde. It was her boyfriend's idea. The garage opens and they meet her boyfriend: Donald. Grace is on high alert as they calmly talk to him. She ignores her ringing phone for a minute but then answers. It's Ham telling her they think it's Donald. She tells him where they are and gets off the phone. Grace keeps talking to him as he puts his hands in his pockets. She tells him she'd feel more comfortable if she could see his hands.
Suddenly he yanks his hands out, Abby yells "gun!" and Grace fires, killing him. Grace picks up the gun in his hand.
Back at the station, Rhetta tries to get Grace to go to the bar. It's the first time Grace has ever killed someone. She says she's fine and is just going to head home.
She goes to the victim's house, where his blood is still on the driveway. Abby pulls up. Grace is impressed Abby knew where to find her. She brought Grace her serial killer cigar. They light up.
