I approached the second Paolo Franchi film " Nessuna qualità agli eroi" ( I like not conventional titles) with biased attitudes and I had to change my mind since the firsts shots
It is a masterful job, dense, consistent with what was already present in the first work. The director enacts the relationship between father and son with an original dramatic tension, inspired to Dostoevskij, Camus, Musil. It is a noir, where hate and love, ambivalence and sincerity, guilt and punishment, or the complexity of psichic life, corrode from the inside the backbone of the film genre. Human relations, thank to a photography that enhances lights and shadows and sometimes resolves in a dazzling white so mysterious, take a place in a concrete way ( the core of the plot is a murder), yet remain suspended between dream and reality, freedom and claustrophobia, anxiety and abandonment. The impeccabile choice of environment, the artistic direction of actors, the formal rigor, the musical design give the film a European label, perhaps for this reason in Italy someone did not understand it and misjudged
