For you tabletop RPG fans, more goodness is heading your way from Iko with their suburban gothic take on an alternate 90s in The Lost Bay. Inspired in equal parts by dark fantasy, horror classics, and the 90s indie culture, The Lost Bay will arrive on Kickstarter on March 19.
Described as a “fever dream of 90s suburban horror”, The Lost Bay is a standalone tabletop role playing game for one to six players that is “rich with factions, mysteries, conflicts, and spooky antagonists”. Set in a world where ancient creatures and forces dwell right next to modern technology and buildings, the game is story-driven, and focuses on exploration and character growth.
Players choose from one of ten character classes called Vibes, which again take after 90s urban and horror archetypes, with each granted specific powers and gear. You have one resource to fuel your power in “the Weird”. Using your powers will always succeed,...

Indie horror frightmaker Brandon Christensen is back again with a supernatural shocker that boasts some of the year’s most brutal moments in horror. With Christensen’s signature style of slick, straight-to-the-point storytelling, the titular Puppetman is an inventive and new villain, akin to urban legends favs The Candyman or The Blair Witch…with one helluva twisted sense of humor.
The Puppetman, imprisoned and awaiting his fate on death row, has consistently professed his innocence, attributing his murderous spree to an ominous power that dominated him. As the narrative unfolds, Michal (portrayed by Alyson Gorske), his daughter, witnesses eerily familiar deaths around her. This sparks doubt about the authenticity of her father’s claims. As the deaths escalate, Michal finds herself burdened with the daunting task of unraveling the enigma of The Puppetman‘s curse.

The use of folklore and native legends as a source for content in the horror genre stretches back decades, whether it be for minuscule scenes within the larger narrative or wholesale films based on such stories. Ranging from the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids to simpler stuff like “When a Stranger Calls” or “Urban Legends,” it’s all fairly commonly used as a building block that serves up some intriguing content. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphun Wongjinda, hot on the heels of their successful creature feature “Leio: The Terrible Giant” (or the rebranded US title “The Beast Beneath”), team up again with inspiration from a Thai legend of a human-possessing centipede to deliver another stellar creature feature in “Creepy Crawly” on Digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA on October 3.

Actor Denzel Washington has worked alongside Hitch star Eva Mendes twice in their careers. The first time they collaborated proved to be a life-changing experience for Mendes, who wasn’t too thrilled with her film career at the time.

Wheelhouse, a media, marketing and investment company founded by Brent Montgomery and Jimmy Kimmel, has just opened a new 10,496-square-foot production space on Sunset Boulevard that’s meant to be a haven for influencers and other talent who need a centralized hub to take meetings and create content.
The company has locations elsewhere in L.A. and in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, but the new West Hollywood space will serve as headquarters for its digital and influencer branches, known as Wheelhouse DNA, which produce shows like Facebook Messenger’s Cookin’ With Brooklyn and Spotify’s Internet Urban Legends.
Ed Simpson, Wheelhouse’s chief strategy officer and the designer of the multiuse space, says the team was primarily focused on pushing the “boundaries of curiosity” when creating the space, adding: “We wanted to build something that has both the work element and the play element.

A college campus transforms into a lawless land of quarantined dorms and sickly students following a virus outbreak in Lazaretto. Written by Clay McLeod Chapman and illustrated by artist Jey Levang, the complete comic book miniseries was recently unleashed as a graphic novel by Boom! Studios and Simon & Schuster, and to celebrate its release, we caught up with Chapman (who is also the creator and performer of The Pumpkin Pie Show) in our latest Q&A to discuss the necessity of telling this story in the comic book medium, collaborating creatively with Levang and Boom! Studios, and how the setting of Lazaretto was partly influenced by’90s slashers and real-life college experiences.
Can you tell us where the idea for Lazaretto came from? There definitely seems to be more of a scare of global epidemics these days with ebola making its way to North America and more anti-biotic resistant strains of the flu.

We’ve all heard the myth about Walt Disney having his body preserved in cryonic storage. In some tellings, it’s just his disembodied head that gets cryonically frozen. With Halloween quickly approaching, horror fans everywhere are in search of the next great scary movie. While 2017 has been a phenomenal year for the genre -- with standouts like Split, Annabelle: Creation, It and Get Out -- audiences need only to look back on the late ’90s slasher era for some of horror’s best thrills.
The genre was more popular than ever thanks to the colossal success of Scream in 1996, with almost every major film studio attempting to recreate that same magic. Soon, everything from Urban Legends to a new installment of Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis followed. Between 1996 and 2000, the horror genre was at an all-time high. So high, it almost became hard to keep track of them all.
But one slasher film in particular stands out among the rest: I Know What You Did Last Summer, which came out 20 years ago on Oct. 17, 1997.
It’s not all that surprising, given the screenplay...

This Friday will see the release of a horror film called “Flatliners,” a movie title that should be instantly familiar to anyone who spent the ’90s trawling the shelves of their local video store in search of something — anything — to watch that weekend. Perhaps best remembered as the crusty VHS that was always sandwiched between “The Fisher King” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” the original “Flatliners” was an asinine but atmospheric psychological horror thing that starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin as foolhardy med students who start experimenting with life after death. Nothing goes wrong and they all live happily ever after.
Now, perhaps motivated by the fact that the mere act of making a movie in 2017 feels like an experiment with life after death, Hollywood is about to unleash a remake starring Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev,...

Urban legends are fictional stories, often dark, that come out of popular culture — and can also be a means by which society tries to explain strange and mysterious goings on. Sometimes the information passed on might be a warning about avoiding a dangerous situation, other times it is an attempt to collectively understand challenging world events. Urban legends have escalated with the rise of the internet, as people are able to share stories more easily. Academics speculate that urban legends and cultural memes become prevalent at times when reliable factual information is in short supply. Today, with many people around the...read more...

When Sky Arts announced they were pressing ahead with Urban Myths, a new series set to explore some of the more random urban legends that have been linked to celebrities over the years, it sounded like it was going to be pretty fun, but as the casting process continued things started to get almost as weird as the stories themselves.

In Scenic Routes, Mike D’Angelo looks at key scenes, explaining how they work and what they mean.
Urban legends and false factoids rarely get past my bullshit meter, but I confess that I was surprised, a few years back, when I finally learned that there isn’t any spike in the suicide rate during the Christmas season. That one just seemed so damn credible. If you’re feeling lonely and depressed, the constant reminder that everyone else is experiencing togetherness and holiday cheer can’t help but rub salt in the wound; it’s not hard to imagine people getting fatally despondent when surrounded by a warm fuzziness from which they feel cruelly excluded. Statistics tell a different story, as it turns out—if anything, there’s arguably a slight dip in the suicide rate and other indicators of mental imbalance (e.g., admissions to psych wards) around Christmas...

With the Scream TV series back on air and Scream Queens season 2 on its way, we look at the rules of making successful slasher TV...
Warning: contains mild spoilers for MTV's Scream season one.
"Think about it," says Noah Foster in the pilot episode of MTV's Scream. "Girl and her friends arrive at the dance, the camp, the deserted town, whatever. Killer-with-a-gimmick takes them out one-by-one. Ninety minutes later, the sun comes up as the girl sits in the back of the ambulance watching her friends' bodies being wheeled past. Roll credits."
It's an awkward piece of self-aware dialogue but also a fair, if simplistic, summation of what a slasher movie is. Like a musical or a rom-com the slasher genre is one hardwired to hit the same familiar beats each time around and, like a musical or a rom-com, audiences keep coming back for more.

Urban legends and pop culture have always had an incredibly healthy relationship. Whether it’s the story about Walt Disney’s body being frozen for when scientists learn how to cheat death or the Munchkin actor who supposedly committed suicide in the background of a scene in The Wizard Of Oz, society can’t get enough of these mysterious anecdotes.
But never are they more fascinating than the ones that spawn from television. When you think about it, television is the perfect place for the creation of urban legends. For a start, a massive amount of material is constantly being recorded, with much of it remaining on the cutting room floor, or simply never being aired.
Then there’s the fact that unlike film, so much television from the last few decades has been lost or become inaccessible to the general public, meaning that this rare and unknown footage...

Then there’s the fact that unlike film, so much television from the last few decades has been lost or become inaccessible to the general public, meaning that this rare and unknown footage...

Urban legends encompass every sick and twisted horror story people (with nothing better to do) can dream up. Be it monsters that defy science or countless variations on Bloody Mary, more and more come out of the woodwork every year, as the world grows more connected.
Little-told local legends can find new life on the internet, and any search of ‘urban legends’ on Google can lead you into a downward spiral of pant-wetting fear and doubt. They fire up the imagination so greatly that it’s a wonder more of them haven’t yet been made into horror films yet.
Anyone who’s seen the underrated 90s slasher flick Urban Legend can tell you how ripe for cinematic adaptation these creepy little folk stories are. Heck, that film even managed to stuff about ten of them in – the classics, like the old lady who tries to dry her wet dog in the microwave,...

It’s Halloween season, which means it’s time for digital content creators to release a new assortment of frightening videos. One of the companies getting in on this fun is Mashable, which has teamed up with Eli Roth’s Crypt TV for a series of horror vignettes titled Urban Legends.
Each of the four episodes in Urban Legends is based on a tall tale that has been passed down from campfire to campfire. “Under the Bed,” for example, retells the classic tale of a killer who imitates his victim’s dog by licking her. Another short, “The Call,” delivers a twist on the classic “the call is coming from inside the house” scenario.

Urban Legends and camp-fires are the perfect way to start a horror film. Point to an old abandoned house and say that a crazy old man still lives there, you must not shout his name or he’ll come and get you. Perfect start to a slasher right? This is the basic plot for Madman, an early 80s genre flick which has had the Arrow Video Blu-ray treatment.
When a group of camp counsellors are telling scary stories around a campfire, they are warned not to say the name of Madman Marz, a crazy old farmer who is still said to haunt the woods around his abandoned home, conveniently close to the camp.

Ric Flair is the man that many fans and wrestlers alike feel is the greatest professional wrestler of all time. Due to number of championships he won, nearly 40 years he spent wrestling and ability to have great matches mixed in with memorable promos, he is worthy of such consideration.
Flair is 65 years old now and he’s not wrestling anymore thankfully, but he’s still being as active as he can. When WWE calls on him to appear on television he’s usually there. When not working for WWE, he’s off doing appearances whether it’s taking photos, signing autographs or speaking somewhere. It’s not like he’s going to get some other job. He’s a wrestler that can’t wrestle anymore, but his name value will never leave.
It has been an interesting journey in wrestling for Flair both on a professional and personal level.

Snopes killed the urban legend, but strange and unprovable stories can still live on in film. And there’s often a grain of truth at the bottom of the most unbelievable story. For Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, the truth is this. In 2001 a Japanese woman, Takako Konishi, was found dead in the snow in North Dakota. […]

Chris Jericho is one of the best overall WWE performers of all time. His name isn’t always mentioned when people discuss the greatest WWE performers ever, but it really should be.
Even though he’s not a big guy in a business full of giants, Jericho is a gifted performer that always wanted to be a pro wrestler. He worked in Japan, Mexico and all over the world to become an all around performer before getting to WWE. As the years have gone on, Jericho has also proven to be one of the most durable wrestlers too. No major injuries to speak of with him.
While his in ring work is excellent, some might say the best thing about him is his ability to cut a great promo. Whether he’s delivering one of his trademark catchphrases or using big words as a heel that rips on the fans for being stupid,...

Batista is one of the most successful professional wrestlers in WWE history and one of its biggest stars in the last decade. He started out as “Deacon Batista” on the Smackdown brand in 2002 and it took him less than three years to win his first World Title while also headlining a WrestleMania.
He was a part of WWE’s talented foursome that all debuted in 2002 with huge aspirations. The others were Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Randy Orton. All of them went on to win multiple World Titles and headlined every major show that there is. Lesnar was pushed the fastest, Cena’s the one that has been the true top guy, Orton has mostly been pushed as the biggest heel in the group and Batista was one of the biggest faces on the Smackdown brand during his run at the top.

Every year around Survivor Series, WWE fans think of Bret Hart. He wrestled in what was arguably the most famous match in WWE history at Survivor Series 1997 when he lost the WWE Title to Shawn Michaels. He wasn’t in on the plan that only a handful of people knew, so it is something that has carried on a legacy for the past 17 years.
What Bret should most be remembered for is a great career in WWE that ended before he really wanted it to, but it’s great that he was able to come back to the company for a Hall of Fame induction as well as a storyline return in 2010. He’s one of the best wrestlers in WWE history because he was able to have great matches with anybody and he took things seriously. Some say he took thing too seriously, which may have led to his downfall.

The man known as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was arguably the biggest star in WWE history at the peak of his career. That’s what Vince McMahon said at Austin’s 2009 Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He’s the only wrestler that McMahon has ever personally inducted, which shows how much the boss appreciated him.
From 1998 to 2001, Austin was a huge draw the likes of which we had never seen before or since. It’s been reported that he made about $15 million in 1999 alone, most of which came from merchandising because everybody was buying his shirts. If you were watching wrestling in those days then you remember how many “Austin 3:16″ shirts there were.

The first "Dumb and Dumber" came out way back in 1994, so it's no surprise last night's premiere for the sequel, "Dumb and Dumber To," was packed full of stars that made us feel a little nostalgic.Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels paid homage to their on-screen alter-egos by dressing in suits similar to the tuxedos they famously sported in the '90s flick. The two also showed up to the red carpet in one very familiar vehicle: The Mutt Cutts van!But the flashbacks didn't stop there. While original film star (and Carrey ex-wife) Lauren Holly was sadly Mia, another pair of '90s women caught our eyes.Vanessa Angel -- who starred in one of the Farrelly Brothers' other films, "Kingpin," as well as the TV version of "Weird Science" -- looked sexy as ever in black leather and lace. Now 47, Angel most recently appeared on an episode of...

World Wrestling Entertainment loves involving celebrities. Whether they are in the ring having matches, guest ring announcing, singing the national anthem, guest hosting Raw to plug whatever movie they’re in or just hanging out in the crowd, the celebrity involvement has always been important to WWE.
It’s smart of WWE to want to involve celebrities. They built the WrestleMania brand around the use of celebrities after all. The presence of big stars like Mr. T, Muhammad Ali and Cyndi Lauper really put WrestleMania on the map. It caused casual fans to watch because of those people, but then they kept watching because they liked what WWE was doing.
Some celebrities are great guests on wrestling shows. Others look lost out there. The ones that usually show that they belong are people that grew up as wrestling fans or maybe they’re still fans. If you watched WWE during...

Introducing Den Of Eek! Urban Legends, our brand new charity ebook...
Around this time last year, 14 brilliant writers from across print and screen came together for one special night in London. It was for our second Den Of Eek! charity horror stories night. Each of them came up with a brand new horror short story - based around an urban legend theme - and delivered it live to the sold out crowd. Money was raised for our Geeks Vs Cancer appeal, and a good night was had by all. A few nightmares, too.
Now, we're put together those stories in one very special ebook, which is on sale now for a modest sum. All profits from the sale of this book will go to cancer charities, and we don't think you'll be shortchanged when you read it.
Here is the link to it at Amazon, where you can buy it for Kindle devices.

Shawn Michaels is arguably the greatest in-ring performer in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. He also had a reputation as one of the biggest jerks in wrestling too.
There were two different periods of Shawn’s career. He started in WWE in the late 1980s as part of the Rockers tag team, moved up the ranks as an Ic Champion, then a top guy World Champion and then his career ended prematurely in 1998 due to a serious back injury that required surgery. Stephanie McMahon was once known as the Billion Dollar Princess and now she’s on her way to being the queen of World Wrestling Entertainment. Some might say she’s already there.
Along with her husband Triple H (Paul Levesque), Stephanie is the heir apparent to her father Vince McMahon whenever he decides to call it a career. As we know, Vince is a workhorse and even though he’s 69 years old, he’s still going to run things in WWE on a daily basis. In ten years that may change and when it does, Stephanie and Hunter will be there to run the show. With her mother Linda and brother Shane no longer in the family business, Stephanie is the going to be the most influential McMahon for the next two or three decades to come.

There’s one title card you’ll see, without fail, on any schlocky, bad horror film produced in the last couple of decades. No, not the Platinum Dunes name – well, yes, that, but that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about the staggering amount of horror films that claim to be “based on a true story” or, at the very least, “inspired by actual events.” It’s something that seems to have begun in the seventies with The Amityville Horror, the classic ghost story that was indeed adapted from the “non-fiction” book by Jay Anson. The story of the Lutz family, who were terrorized by paranormal phenomena in their Dutch Colonial house, was a publishing sensation when it was released, and even more so when the film version was released.

There’s something about the innocent magic of Walt Disney and his parks that attracts more sinister suggestions. For some reason cynics and naysayers are all too keen to look beyond the colourful, charming exterior of his animations to look for something darker and on an odd number of occasions supernatural – thanks in part, no doubt, by the enduring myth that the animation king is frozen somewhere waiting to be reborn again.

The career of Hunter Hearst Helmsley (real name Paul Levesque) in WWE has spanned nearly 20 years. He started in 1995 as a midcard wrestler that was using the rich aristocrat gimmick. His rise to prominence in WWE was similar to a lot of wrestlers in that he started at the bottom, became an Intercontinental Champion, King of the Ring and eventually a WWE Champion as well.
Hunter became a top guy mostly as a heel known simply as Triple H. He noted on Chris Jericho’s podcast this week that his good friend Shawn Michaels was calling him Triple H at the beginning of his career and eventually Vince McMahon okayed it as a full time thing in 1997. Hunter went on to win 13 WWE World Titles and was a fixture in the main event scene from 1999 to 2011 when he stopped wrestling full time.
These days his career is mostly out of the ring.

The Undertaker is one of the biggest legends in the history of professional wrestling. His WWE career started at Survivor Series 1990 and even though he’s not a regular performer in WWE today, the mystique that surrounds him is still there.
When WWE created The Undertaker’s gimmick they had no idea that the man portraying the character (Mark Calaway) would still be wrestling 24 years later. It just sort of happened that the 6’10″ 300 pounder was the right choice. He’s built up the reputation as the conscience of WWE and the locker room leader that is arguably the most respected performer in the history of the company.
The Undertaker became a main event performer within his first year. He had his struggles in the early 1990s as he learned how to be a top guy and he improved over the years. You can actually make a case that...

The scary thing about most horror movies is precisely how terrifying they’re not. Being wet-your-pants frightening is literally their raison d’être, and yet there are films being hyped as horror out there that couldn’t get ‘fear’ in Hangman if you gave them three letters and made the Scream face.
That’s why it’s heartwarming to see that filmmakers are still promoting their fright flicks using the tried and tested pro wrestling promoter’s trick of lying through their teeth. Scary stories on set, fictional ‘this happened to me in real life’ tales in the media, sombre based-on-a-true-story taglines – we’ve seen ‘em all, but it’s good to see people earnestly making the effort. And yet… are all of them promotional gimmicks?
There are some Chinese whispers about the stories behind horror movies that have the ring of truth to them. Whether they’re based on real tragedies,...
