Kristin Carlson : Every year the Carlson clan celebrates a big traditional Danish Christmas. It's a chance to get in touch with our roots.
Eileen Swift : If I were you, I'd pay a little more attention to your roots.
Kate Harper : Eileen!
Kristin Carlson : Okay, she's just kidding. And I love seeing her smile!
Eileen Swift : You do?
Kristin Carlson : Absolutely! You get all these cute little lines around your eyes!
[Eileen slips on her sunglasses and picks up her coffee]
Eileen Swift : B-bye.
-
Kristin Carlson : In the Carlson family, the big dinner happens on the eve of Christmas Eve. It's a celebration of all the Danish traditions.
Ross Harper : Bring it on! It could actually be quite humorous!
-
Kristin Carlson : I picked up a few things for my Eve of Christmas Eve dinner. Boy, there must be a lot of people celebrating Danish Christmases here.
Brian Harper : Really, why's that?
Kristin Carlson : Well, there were only two vats of lard left!
-
Kristin Carlson : Okay everyone, it's time for the famous Carlson Eve of Christmas Eve Dinner!
[the Harpers look at the food with disgust]
Kate Harper : Um... Eileen's not here yet.
Kristin Carlson : Well, tough!
Ross Harper : Well, that's certainly in keeping with the Christmas spirit.
Kristin Carlson : Well I'm sorry, but in the Carlson household, the famous Eve of Christmas Eve dinner commences promptly at seven! The Danish are known for their punctuality.
Ross Harper : As well as for their great sense of humor.
[everyone laughs]
Kristin Carlson : I don't get it.
-
Kristin Carlson : Part of Danish lore says that at Christmas time, gremlins can be very nasty, so at this dinner it's important that everyone be very nice to the gremlins.
[to Eileen]
Ross Harper : Oh, it's your lucky day!
-
Kristin Carlson : Okay, food's on the table. Here's the greased ham, pickled fish balls and hunks of molasses that are smothered with lard.
Brian Harper : Yum.
-
Kristin Carlson : Let's make a dent in that greased ham. Before it congeals.
Eileen Swift : Uh, I don't think so, Kristin. I have to... go call my cardiologist.
