The most memorable segment to me in this third of "The War" series, remembering World War II, is the death of "Babe" and the incredible sadness of picturing the grief his mom and family went through. No matter how bad the fighting was in Italy - and it was horrible for the Allies for a long time - "Babe" never let on his letters back home, always was upbeat and positive. What an inspiring story!
That's the second most memorable thing about this third episode: how badly things went for the Americans in Italy, the losses that were taken at Anzio and other places, and then the stupidity of Gen. Mark Clark who could have really wiped out the Nazis in Italy and instead made a stupid move. However, finally good progress was made right before "D-Day" (which I assume will be covered in great length in the next part.)
Other powerful stories included the riots in Mobile, Alabama and the battle of Tarawa and the showing of that footage in theaters in 1943 (the first time Americans had seen some brutal war film).
This was a strong two hours of movie-making.
