Japanese director wrote The Masque Of The Black Death before his death in 1998.
China’s Huayi Brothers Media has unveiled an ambitious slate of new projects, including The Masque Of The Black Death, based on an unfilmed script written by Japan’s most influential filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa.
Kurosawa started writing the script in 1975 after directing Dersu Uzala as an adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe short story, The Masque Of The Red Death. He completed the script before his death in 1998, but it never went into production.
The Poe short story follows a prince and his noblemen attempting to hide from a deadly epidemic behind the walls of a castle. The courtiers hold an elaborate masquerade, as a distraction from the devastation outside, but the Red Death itself turns up as a guest.

The opening title card improbably, surprisingly reads “New York 2015,” and within seconds we are immersed in a expatriate Chinese holiday party for a friend about to leave for a new job. The images come fast and contextless; CGI renderings of New York, quick interiors, and critically, a glimmer of analogue past. An old Chinese film starts accidentally on the group’s karaoke machine, prompting groans and rolling eyes. Quickly (inevitably), the same footage is played on a cell phone, in the back of a cab. A lone man, pulled by nostalgia and memory, is lured into the image and an impromptu journey to his home town.

“Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” is director Tsui Hark’s sequel to his 2010 hit “Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame”, starring Andy Lau. Lau isn’t back for the second time around, which makes sense since this is apparently a prequel, thus the “Young” in the title. Mark Chao takes over the role as the royal investigator, this time facing creatures from the black lagoon. Or, er, the Chinese seas, anyway. Then at one point he swims in the ocean…while riding his horse! Now that’s skill, baby! Check out the first trailer and a poster for the film below. From legendary action director Tsui Hark and the creators of international smash hit Detective Dee: Mystery Of The Phantom Flame comes an action-packed and captivating tale of Dee Renjie’s beginnings in the Imperial police force. His very first case, investigating reports of a sea monster terrorizing the town,...

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame Directed by: Tsui Hark Written by: Kuo-fu Chen, Lin Qianyu (story), Jialu Zhang (screenplay) Starring: Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Li Bingbing, Chao Deng, Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Jean-Michel Casanova If you thought Guy Ritchie was the only one capable of taking a well-known detective and turning him into an over-the-top action hero, well, then you haven't seen Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. Directed by Hong Kong veteran Tsui Hark, the movie is inspired by a real-life historical figure from the Zhou Dynasty named Di Renjie, who served as chancellor to Wu Zetian, the first and only female Emperor of China. Prior to that he had been a magistrate and judge, which was the basis for the 18th century novel The Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee. This new big budget wuxia film re-imagines him as not only a crime-solving super sleuth,...

Director: Tsui Hark.
Writers: Kuo-fu Chen, Lin Qianyu (original story) and Jialu Zhang (screenplay).
When Chinese producer, director and writer Tsui Hark is heavily involved in a production, he often leaves a huge cinematic stamp on it and the international world pays attention. The last film he directly worked on was Seven Swords (2005), which borrowed on some ideas from Akira Kurosawa's Shichinin no Samurai (Seven Samurai). But these days, his most recent work that’s getting noticed is Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.
Although Hark is not involved in the writing of this detective mystery thriller, his trademark for phantasmagorical storytelling and gorgeously framed visuals is certainly consistent throughout. The only shame is the larger dependence on CGI in modern Hong Kong Cinema to recreate the sprawling cityscape around Daming Palace, which is the backdrop for most of this film. Also, not all of the...

Review of Detective Dee - Exhaustive, and exhausting, lineup of fight scenes feels silly after a while. This Chinese murder mystery (with a title that sounds like a Scooby Doo episode -- ruh roh) and wannabe epic bursts at the seams with nonstop hand-to-hand combat and is brought further down with the occasional phony-looking stage-set or CGI effects. But unlike its lineup of far superior kung fu predecessors over the past decade-plus -- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; House Of Flying Daggers, even May’s True Legend -- Dee’s lack of compelling characters and abstruse storyline had me primarily wondering when it would end. The title character is based on legendary Tang Dynasty official Di Renjie, a real-life judge known in every Chinese household today and made famous in the West by Robert van Gulik’s Judge Dee mystery series, written in the mid-twentieth century.

There are so many films that get made that we never really hear of do to the fact that they get drowned out by the big boys. Then there are a ton of foreign films that many of us don’t hear about until Hollywood announces that they are remaking it. It really is a shame that we don’t hear about a lot of these non-Hollywood underground films. I try to keep up the best I can on the indie film foreign circuit, I’m only one man and I can only do so much.
This brings us to a movie I recently saw at the Los Angeles Film Festival, a wonderfully epic martial arts film called Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. Fact: I love watching martial arts films especially when they have a good solid story to go along with the kick-ass fight sequences.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

IndieWIRE's Anne Thompson certainly pleased by this bit of news. If my count is good, this is title number eight for the Indomina Releasing folks - and it may be their crown jewel in their mad streak of pick-ups. The Venice and Tiff preemed Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame has been acquired by the new genre label and they'll want to make sure they roll the epic title quickly. Gist: Written by Chen Kuofu and based on the book by Lin Qianyu, this is a fictional account of Di Renjie, one of the most celebrated officials of the Tang Dynasty. When the mysterious deaths of a series of loyal subjects threaten to delay the 690 A.D. inauguration of Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau), she summons the infamous Detective Dee (Andy Lau) back from exile into which she cast him eight years earlier. ...

Venice - "Meek's Cutoff," a western with a female point of view from director Kelly Reichardt, was the talk of the Venice Film festival Saturday both because of its unusual take on the tried and true western genre and because actress Michelle Williams, who plays one of the film's protagonists, had paparazzi flashbulbs popping when she showed up in a pale Jason Wu silk chiffon embroidered gown.
Also on Sunday, the festival featured the in-competition world premieres of "Di Renjie" (Detective Dee) from Tsui Hark and Pablo Larrain's "Post Mortem."
Observers said Williams' chic look injected a bolt of glamour into the festival that has been short on it this year, at least compared to normal Venice standards. And the film itself, which screened in the festival's main Sala Grande venue, attracted the attention of critics with its innovative storytelling about a group of settlers lost in the Oregon desert...

The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:
22nd of May Koen Mortier, Belgium World Premiere
The director of Ex-Drummer returns with an artful meditation on political violence. A security guard fails to prevent a horrific explosion in a shopping mall, then lives through the aftermath as a series of overlapping what-ifs.
Africa United Debs Gardner-Paterson, United Kingdom World Premiere
Africa United tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their bid to achieve their lifelong dream - to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in Johannesburg.
Aftershock Feng Xiaogang, China North American Premiere...

Bangkok -- Tsui Hark will direct Andy Lau in the period martial arts suspense thriller "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" in Hong Kong and China beginning in May, production company Huayi Brothers said.
With a $13 million budget, a script by Chen Kuofu and production by Chen, Tsui's wife and partner Nansun Shi and former Columbia and Emperor executive Peggy Lee, Tsui and Huayi will bring to life an imagined case solved by a real Tang Dynasty detective.
When the mysterious deaths of a series of loyal subjects threaten to delay the 690 A.D. inauguration of Empress Wu, China's only female leader, she calls the infamous Detective Dee (Lau) back from an exile into which she cast him eight years earlier.
