We've been signing the praises of Adam Mason on the site for years. The American horror director has a taste for the off-beat and usually has a very specific take on what would seen to be a generic genre exercise. Blood River comes immediately to mind, but he's made some great films over the past years including Luster and Not Safe for Work, which he co-wrote with long time collaborator Simon Boyes.
His new film is called Hangman. It recently played at SXSW to great praise, so we tracked down the first trailer for you to take a look at. Again, while the footage may appear to ape the Paranormal Activity found footage feel, you can tell there is something much more sinis [Continued ...]...

Yesterday we told you that Joe Johnston's Not Safe for Work was going to be headed straight to video. The news came from an interview the La Times did with producer Jason Blum that made things sound kind of grim. Apparently that's not the case at all.
The original comment was as follows: "Some of my movies work, and some of them don't," Blum said. "I want to be able to say to the studio, 'We missed; let's go to VOD.'"
Bloody Disgusting got in touch with Blum, who clarified his remarks. He wasn’t addressing the quality of any film in particular, just whether one of his movies would work as a wide release. Moreover, in the above quote he was talking about his model and preference of options rather than directly addressing any specific movie or the quality of the film. And, for the record, he “thinks it's great.

Director Joe Johnston has chosen to follow up his big-budget superhero flick, last summer’s Captain America: The First Avenger, with a new “micro-budgeted thriller” that will, unfortunately, be pretty hard to search for online. The film is called Not Safe For Work (or just Nsfw) and “it follows a young paralegal trapped in an office with a killer mission to destroy files and anyone that stands in his path.” Sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays! (Forgive me.) The film is starting to come together, with Max Minghella (The Social Network, The Darkest Hour) in talks to play that put-upon paralegal, with Elise Mumford (part of the ensemble on the new TV show The River, and soon to be seen in that Miley Cyrus sorority flick So Undercover) also in talks to Minghella’s girlfriend, who just so happens to works in his office. While we haven’t seen enough from Mumford to...

Salvation -- they think -- comes in the form of a ghost town named Blood River and the gospel-spewing itinerant they encounter there. But soon they realize that the helpful stranger might not be so helpful after all."...

Ellie Rose is a film from director Tristan Versluis, which has a second title, Not Alone. This film completed production way back in 2009 and now, this b-movie fan has found the first trailer for Ellie Rose, which is full of gruesome gore and family feuds. One character seems to mistake some people for a cord of wood, as the hatchet does some brutal damage to characters and this reviewer's psyche. Have a look at the gory video below, courtesy of Stealth Media Group and prepare yourself to see the most horrifying of what indie film has to offer.
The synopsis for Ellie Rose is here:
"Torn by years in an abusive marriage, an emotional Ellie Rose arrives at the family cabin along a broken coastline. The cabin unused for years, still holds memories. Imprisoned by her own actions and haunted by the ghosts of her past, Ellie soon starts to...

As we transform ourselves here at HorrorBid into a true interactive horror magazine, one key thing we've discussed that we wanted to start doing is focusing on some of the lesser known talent that maybe haven't had their big Hollywood dreams realized but are well on their way. That's the case with our very first edition of HorroBid's "Need to Know" column featuring the ultra talented film maker, director and writer, Adam Mason....
With Hollywood flooding the mainstream market with poorly thought out remakes and unneeded sequels it’s no wonder that many die hard genre fans are turning to the indie scene for their fix of original and more extreme horror, which does not have to worry about reaching a larger theatre going crowd based on their ability to secure a PG13 rating. Movies that reach massive audiences based only on word of mouth and various guerilla advertising methods,...

While I continue to read hilarious stories about Charlie Sheen and briefcase full of coke, now's probably a good time to tell you about Adam Mason's Junkie. The boys over at Twitch Film landed behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Mason's latest psychological mind-trip that stars Tess Panzer, Andrew Howard, Caroline Guivarch, Robert Lasardo, Daniel Louis Rivas and Tomas Boykin in a gritty, violent tale of addicts behaving badly. You can click the link for all of the bloody pics. Mason directed Blood River, The Devil's Chair, Pig and the forthcoming Luster. This film reteams him with regular Andrew Howard who can also be seen in the I Spit on Your Grave remake from Anchor Bay.

Each year horror sites, newspapers, magazines and other forms of media like to compile these silly "Best of," or "Worst of" lists. Here at 28Dla, we like to follow the crowds, but in a different way. This year's lists will consist of various categories including "Top Five Indie Horror Films," "Top Five Major Horror Release," "Top Five Foreign Horror," "Worst Horror Films of 2010," and "Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2011." These lists will be a little more focused. So, let us start with this first list titled "Top Five Indie Horror Films."
Now, this is a year where close to fifty independent films were reviewed on this site. There was the pain of Danny Dyer's Basement from Revolver Entertainment to highlights like Die-Ner, Get It? and the over-the-top and disturbing Harpoon: Whale Watching Massacre. This list will give you the "Best of" in this competitive genre, as this reviewer has seen the gamut.

If there's one man who knows how to paint a distinct picture of insanity at its most brutal, it's director Adam Mason. We've been talking about his new film, Luster, for a very long time now, but judging from the newly released trailer we won't have much longer to wait.

It has been a long road for Adam Mason and Luster, his third collaboration with his The Devil's Chair and Blood River star Andrew Howard taking long enough to make its way to completion that the duo actually started and finished a fourth film together - the grueling single take horror picture Pig - while this one was in post production.
Well, now it's done. Or at least very, very close to it - word is the final tweaks to sound mix will be completed next week - which means the film will soon be unleashed upon the world which, in turn, means a new trailer is required.

As part of our ongoing effort to find you guys all the latest and greatest genre projects from across the globe, today we have the early word on Tristan Versluis' short film "Pixel", a tale of one man's wild antics and over-sexed ego, which inevitably steer him into his own redemption.
"Pixel" was written, produced, and directed by Versluis, a multi-talented special effects man (Hot Fuzz, Sweeney Todd, Blood River) turned director. His main character is a man "living the lifestyle", but this time the woman he picks up isn't going to let his behavior get away with it, showing him that there is another side to reality.
The short has been in post for two years now, and its immense amount of CGI effects was headed up by the talented Jonathan Klar (wrangling over 40 post-production crew members and guiding them through the many stages of modeling, animating, match moving,...

[Adam Mason's Blood River has walked a difficult path from production to release and so, with the film now screening at the Sitges Film Festival, I re-present now the review I wrote for the picture roughly two and a half years ago when it was wrapping up post production.]
Over the past few years we have kept close tabs on British director Adam Mason in these pages, drawn in first by his remarkable ability to manipulate tension and accomplish rather a lot on very tiny budgets, and then further impressed by the remarkable steps forward Mason has been taking from film to film. And fresh off of an appearance by his feature The Devil's Chair in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto Film Festival that constant striving forward continues with his latest effort, the genre defying Blood River. By far Mason's most cinematic film to date it is also his more personal work and features the most thematically complex script from Mason and writing partner Simon Boyes to date. A simmering study of Old Testament style sin and retribution, Blood River plays like a slow burning Faulkner by way of Deliverance.

[Editor's Note: This was published during the 2010 edition of the Fantastia Int. Film Festival. We are republishing the article to coincide with the theatrical release.] I Spit on Your Grave has two strikes against it right out of the block: one, die hard horror fans are very vocal about their distaste for remakes of their favorite films of yesteryear; and two, the fact that it's a remake of one of the - if not the - most brutal rape revenge films ever made means that even if it's good (it is), the subject matter is way up there on the controversy barometer. So the big question is: did I Spit on Your Grave need to be remade for a 21st century audience? Director Steven Monroe (Wyvern, Storm Cell), a huge fan of the 1978 original (also known as Day of the Woman), seems to have thought not, but made the film out of a sense of necessity: at the pre-screening introduction of the film's world premiere at Fantasia he said that when he saw the rights...
