Clever but yet clear animation with accurate point
A young man works in an office on a temporary basis. Working alongside his new colleague it doesn't seem to matter if the man he has to share his days with is surly and dismissive, he still manages to be cheerful and enthusiastic. Of course, in the world of the temporary worker, nothing lasts forever.
It took me a minute or two of reflecting on this film to decide what I thought about it. On one hand it seemed quite clever as a bit of social comment but then on the other it seemed a bit too obvious and was maybe not as smart as it thought it was. On reflection I think it is actually pretty smart and engaging. OK, the message here is quite obvious and wider issues are shown in the treatment of the temp of the title at the hands of the birds but this is not the same as saying that the short is obvious, rather it just means it is clear and accessible. The plot is quite thin but has enough to fill the three minute running time but it is the imaginative delivery that makes it work.
The animation is quite clever despite being a little cluttered when in the office. The delivery of the idea is good and I liked the little touches (eg the temp momentarily enjoying the freedom of being carried by the bird, and of course the permanent employee learning that it comes to us all in the end) that bring the ideas out well. It did give me cause for some reservations but this short is actually quite smart, making its (very accurate) point in a way that is clever but also clear to the casual viewer. Another good animated short from Blackwatch.
