- Young Italian Michele visits his grandfather Michael, a former clown named "Buba", in an abandoned Carpathian village to honor his mother. Strange events turn serious things into tragicomedy, uniting the once-divided fates of grandfather and grandson.
- MICHELE (MIKE) PARODI, 16, lives in Genova. His Ukrainian mother, NINA GALAMASIUK, immigrated to Italy sixteen years ago in search of her newborn son's Italian father. Neither Nina's father, MIKHAILO GALAMASIUK, a famous Ukrainian clown, nor her former lover, Michele's father, MARCO, agreed to accept her and the baby. Only a chance meeting with a kindhearted lady, LAURA, saves Nina and her child. Laura, the owner of a small beach cafe in Genova, shelters them both and employs Nina. Michele grows up as a vulnerable kid who is aware of the fact that he is only half-Italian. Nina's sudden death, a real shock for Michele, sends him to Ukraine for the first time in his life. According to her last will, he has to take his mother's ashes to her native village in the Carpathians and scatter them from the tower that once stood in front of their house. Michele's trip to Ukraine is a real challenge for him: he does not speak Ukrainian, he knows nothing about the country, and moreover, he has never met his only living kin - his grandfather Mykhailo. Once a hilarious clown, Mykhailo is now a seventy-year-old, grim and stern individual who estranged his own daughter years ago and now lives alone in the village where Michele arrives. They meet there, and it turns out to be a demanding experience for both. The tower mentioned in Nina's last will is ruined, so Mykhailo decides to rebuild it. Meanwhile, Michele, a real big city boy, feels completely alienated not only from the place but also from his grim grandfather. Gradually, the two begin to discover each other, as they are living in the same house and have to communicate. Michele begins to appreciate his newly discovered home, and before the tower is completed, their relationship begins to take shape. Unfortunately, when Nina's last will is fulfilled, Mykhailo dies of a second heart attack, but he dies a happy man, aware of the fact that his daughter, through her son, has forgiven him for his coldhearted behavior.
