[Warning! Although all reviews contain information that the listener will not know until they hear the album, this review (which is actual a preview, since the album will not have been released at the time of posting) is highly detailed. If you are a Marillion fan who would prefer not to be "influenced" specifically in any way prior to your first listen, suffice to say that I am giving the album 4.5 out of 5 stars.]
"The cold war's gone, but those bastards'll find us another one They're here to protect you, don't you know? So get used to it - Get used to it!... The sense that it's useless, and the fear to try Not believing the leaders, the media that feed us Living with the big lie."
("Living With the Big Lie," from Brave)
In the 27 years since Steve Hogarth took over as lead vocalist for Marillion, the band has had only one bona fide concept album: the aurally and emotionally stunning Brave (1994). Using as a starting point the (true) news story of a young woman found roaming around an area of England -- who did not know who she was, or where she had come from, and even refused to speak to the police or the media -- the band created a fictional "back story" for her, which included some fairly "dark" elements,...

I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

There are several dangers in becoming a cultural icon, not the least of which is the stigma that your public will forever keep you imprisoned in the mold of your iconography, allowing the recipient a privileged, if imprisoned, existence, particularly if that person is an artist. Sean Connery faced just such a dilemma during the height of James Bond-mania in the mid-60's. A serious actor, Connery desperately wanted to break out of the action hero mold that was British Superspy James Bond,...

“Ghost Stories” is Chris Martin’s equivalent of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” Bob Dylan’s “Blood On the Tracks,” or Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel Of Love.” No, I’m not suggesting that Coldplay’s latest, out this week, will have a similar endurance or that it packs a gut punch like these three seminal albums, only that it is the latest in the pantheon of albums chronicling the breakup of a long term marriage or relationship where the artist lays himself/herself bare. “I just got broken, broken into two,” Martin sings on the lilting “Magic.” And yet, as he goes on to sing on one of the album’s strongest tracks, the Edm-influenced, soaring “A Sky Full of Stars,” featuring Avicii, “I don’t care if you tear me apart,” because his ex-love is so radiant that being in her orbit is enough to warrant any pain. Even “Magic” ends on an up note.

Among the seminal progressive rock groups of the late '60s and early '70s, Yes has undergone its share of personnel changes. The group started out with Chris Squire (bass), Peter Banks (guitar), Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), and Tony Kaye (keyboards), and released two albums, the eponymous Yes, and Time and A Word. Banks either left or was fired (it depends on who you believe), and was replaced with Steve Howe. [N.B. Peter Banks passed away in March 2013.] This new line-up produced just one album, The Yes Album.
Kaye left due to band friction, and was replaced by Rick Wakeman. This line-up produced two albums, Fragile and Close to the Edge -- the latter being the band's tour-de-force, and one of the most revered progressive rock albums of all time (see my Cc article, The Absolutely Essential Progressive Rock Albums), as well as one of the first albums on which the entire first side...

A Hero A Fake was formed in 2004, when three of the original members were still in high school. Who can blame them? Being in a band is so much cooler than gnashing your teeth over quadratic equations in maths or busting your balls over the combustion of potassium chlorate in chemistry. Who’d want to go home and sling their head into a revision book when they can go home and sling a guitar around their neck instead? I definitely wouldn’t have, but these guys are sort of dark horses as they carried on their education even though they were a band gaining momentum and recognition for their hard work and quickly-progressed sound. The members who were still in college would travel back and forth between college and their home town every weekend to write songs and to tour.

The band whose latest effort, Here’s to Taking it Easy, made three Paste staffers’ Best Music of 2010 top 10 lists had its van stolen after a show at Pier 54 in New York City last night. According to an update from Phosphorescent’s label, Dead Oceans, frontman Matthew Houck’s custom 1955 Gibson Es-125 guitar in addition to his vintage amplifiers, vintage pedal steel and all of the band’s merchandise were in the van. All in all, Phosphorescent’s losses come to about $40,000....

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence...
