A Living Wage
The New York city school system has long had its specialty school. The best known these days is the High School for Performing Arts. This short subject about the Manhattan Trade School For Girls concerns itself with another. In a Manhattan where a girl would get out of grade school and go look for a job, she would be confronted with unskilled positions that might pay fifty cents a day. This would be a valuable addition to the family coffers, but even in those days, no one could live on that sum.
The Trade School offered one-year courses in subjects like hatmaking, operating sewing machines, and so forth. We follow four or five girls as they train in their specialties, getting hot meals, and good exercise, and they come out and are placed at jobs where the starting salaries are between $5 and $9 a week; year later, some are taking home $18. It's hard work, but a living wage.
