When I first heard Alison Krauss had done a duet CD with Robert Plant, I couldn't believe it. I mean, who would believe that pairing? A bluegrass performer who sings slow, haunting songs paired with a former blues rocker-screamer from the band "Led Zeppelin?"
Well, as music fans already know: it worked! The couple has already won awards for their efforts on the CD and it was fun to see the two of them filmed in this concert. What really made this special was the addition of some wonderful musicians with the band led and arranged by T-Bone Burnett. It seems that most things Burnett touches turn into winners. He jokes in a short interview that at age 59, he never figured to be in a band featuring the likes of Plant and Krauss! The ending credits did not say who the lead guitarist was in this band, but this guy was tremendous. He produced some of the most unique sounds I've ever heard on guitar.
All of them combined to make some nice music, too. At first, I thought this is a different kind of sound, but it isn't. It's more Krauss-type music mainly, meaning mostly haunting melodies but Plant does an outstanding job, himself. He doesn't look quite as comfortable in that venue as Allison, but Robert's a rocker and a loose kind of guy, almost a comedian. He's having fun and judging by the amount of smiles on Alison's face, she is, too. Actually, of the songs performed for the camera, Plant's voice is more pronounced in here than hers....so he definitely proved he can handle a Nashville sound as well as his heavy metal rock-blues.
This may be one of the oddest pairings I've ever heard of - and seen in concert - but it clicks. This is good music!
