When comedian Conan O’Brien’s Hot Ones episode began to pick up steam across the internet, some of his friends got the wrong idea.
“I had a bunch of friends who saw my name all over Twitter and the first assumption is, ‘He’s dead,'” O’Brien said on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast. “I did have people say, ‘Oh my God, I thought, “Finally!'”
O’Brien’s appearance on the YouTube hot wings interview show, hosted by Sean Evans, made waves upon its release earlier this month, with fans in awe at the comedian’s commitment to an unhinged performance that featured O’Brien chugging hot sauce and rubbing it on his face and chest. As a result, the comedian said, he was left with “incredibly runny” eyes and a mouth that “really hurt.” He also experienced “burning” across his skin, especially where the substance...

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down, this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.
Here is an example. Early in the first episode of his new, four-episode Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” Conan — who has earned the right to be referred to by his first name. See: Carson, Johnny — travels to Oslo, Norway. There, he pops in on Jarle, a Norwegian waif of a rapper that Conan had originally met on a segment of his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. In the podcast video, Jarle’s hair was combed and he seemed coherent. Then Conan surprises him. Jarle comes to the door, and he’s maybe 110 pounds in a long sleeve T-shirt,...

Late-night talk shows were like home when I was a teenager. Social anxieties could disappear, bullies were non-existent, and the humorous, non-consequential words of the hosts would calm me down after a stressful day at school. The comedians who took over TV after 11:35 Pm welcomed me into a universe I belonged to, a complete contrast from the social outcasting I felt in the classroom walls. I could live vicariously through their jokes and joyful scenarios in which the audience cheered and clapped, and nobody’s confidence was shattered by a lousy joke.
Along with Craig Ferguson, Conan O’Brien was a nightly weekday highlight. Conan’s spastic impressions and self-deprecating pokes were a warm fire in front of the TV, a silly distraction for me and so many of his viewers who loved to gather around his aura every night on NBC and then TBS at the dawn of the decade.

If you still forget to drop the “HBO” when talking about Max, take comfort in the fact that Conan O’Brien is in the same boat.
Appearing on an episode of “Hot Ones” to promote his new Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” the late night TV legend poked some fun at his employer’s decision to rebrand the flagship Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service after years of calling it HBO Max.
“Is it HBO Max or just Max? I can’t get used to it,” O’Brien said early in his appearance on the chicken wing-centric talk show. “It’s not a better name.”
As the episode progressed — and O’Brien’s tastebuds were subjected to more pain — the comedian became more vocal about his disdain for the rebranding. By the end, he was comically shouting about how he preferred the name HBO.

Tuesday night saw something that, fourteen years ago, might have seemed impossible: Conan O’Brien returned to “The Tonight Show.” And he was greeted with a standing ovation.
He was there, ostensibly, to promote a forthcoming Max series in which he travels the world meeting fans. But he’d come a long way just to get to 30 Rockefeller Center in 2024, and the interview with current “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon functioned as a peace offering, or a marker of how much time has passed.
O’Brien, after all, exited the program under a cloud in 2010, after a much-followed period of corporate intrigue. Inheriting the show from Jay Leno, O’Brien was set up to fail when NBC programmed a prime-time Leno series, which bombed, as his lead-in five nights a week; O’Brien departed the show after only seven months, at which point Leno replaced him. O’Brien comported himself throughout with a certain pained dignity,...

With his long awaited Max series set to premiere in April, Conan O’Brien is making a return trip to The Paley Center.
The Paley Center announced on Wednesday that O’Brien will take part in a special event titled “Globetrotting and Podcasting: Conan O’Brien’s Life After Late-Night TV.”
The New York City event will feature an exclusive screening of an episode from his new series ahead of its April 18 premiere, followed by a conversation with O’Brien himself.
O’Brien ended his 28-year career in late-night in June 2021. He’s since been mostly focused on podcasting. In 2022, Sirius Xm bought his podcast network for $150 million and signed O’Brien himself to a five-year contract. His flagship podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend is said to command upwards of 9 million downloads a month.

Debuting in 1993, Late Night with Conan O’Brien witnessed many iconic bits and gas, but arguably the best creation to emerge from the show was Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Puppeteered by Robert Smigel, which made its first appearance in 1997, the cigar-chomping dog is rude and crude to everyone and everything, but most importantly, he’s devastatingly funny.
From attacking Star Wars fans to Bon Jovi, it doesn’t matter who you are, Triumph roasts everyone equally, and unluckily, even the Late Night Host wasn’t immune from his insults.

Three years ago, when Conan O’Brien retired from late-night, it was a very different world. Max was known as HBO Max. TBS was still releasing original series. David Zaslav had just been announced as the CEO of what would become Warner Bros. Discovery. Change was in the air, and now many, many changes have happened.
But Conan remains a constant. Before “Conan” (the late-night series on TBS) welcomed its last guests, its host had already launched a wildly successful podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” He soon sold his booming digital media business to SiriusXM for $150 million, produced stand-up specials (“Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This?” and “Gary Gulman: Born on Third Base”) and podcast series (from Rob Lowe and Andy Richter), and acted in everything from “Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain” and “Murderville” to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

“Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively
The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.
Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.
“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.
The ensemble also features Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark,...

Universal Pictures has released all three of filmmaker Jordan Peele’s directing efforts to date – Get Out, Us, and Nope – and they’re working with him on his fourth film as well, a project that is, so far, only known as Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele. At one time, Universal had announced that they would be releasing Peele’s fourth film on Wednesday, December 25, 2024… but that plan has since changed. The film has been removed from Universal’s release schedule, and during a recent interview on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast Peele confirmed that the change in release plans is due to the strikes that hit Hollywood last year. Peele is still working on the project – and he thinks it could out to be his favorite of the films he has made.

Jordan Peele burst onto the filmmaking scene back in 2017 with critical acclaim, box office success, and even a huge win at the Academy Awards, making Get Out one of the most promising debut features in the history of the horror genre. Late Night viewers may not have initially understood Conan O’Brien’s brand of humor, but there was an important demographic who did: college kids.
In Vanity Fair‘s oral history of Late Night with Conan O’Brien for the show’s 30th anniversary, its cast and crew detailed how the college demographic ended up inadvertently saving the series from cancellation.
Months after the show premiered in September 1993, producer Jeff Ross received a call from NBC execs saying the show was in “imminent danger of being canceled.” Greg Kinnear was rumored to take over for O’Brien, as the gamble of hiring an unknown name to host Late Night had seemingly not paid off. However, exec Rick Ludwin convinced NBC to give the show another chance to find its audience.

Ed Helms said he would be down to reprise his role as Stu in a fourth installment of The Hangover franchise.
While speaking with People magazine at the Los Angeles premiere of Netflix’s Family Switch Wednesday, the actor said he would “of course” return for The Hangover Part IV if the opportunity presented itself.
“I mean, [costars] Bradley [Cooper],Zach [Galifianakis], [director] Todd [Philips] — these are some of my favorite people on the planet, so I would do anything with them,” he said. “Oh my God, I would do anything with those guys.”
Helms’ comments come days after Cooper said on The New Yorker Radio Hour that he would do another sequel in the R-rated franchise “in an instant” because “I love Todd, I love Zach, I love Ed so much.” But he admitted, “I don’t think Todd is ever going to do that.”

A new deluxe reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero, is out today (October 27th) to coincide with the album’s 30th anniversary.
The original In Utero arrived after Nirvana had already become global superstars, and is thematically characterized by the band’s discomfort with their status, particularly from frontman, Kurt Cobain. Celebrating it on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2018, Consequence contributor Ryan Bray praised the album as “arguably the truest representation of what Nirvana was: a massive act with the principles and integrity of one half its size… It’s a difficult but ironclad document of artistic bravery.”
Now, the album is being honored in a whole new fashion. Among the 53 unreleased tracks are two full In Utero-era concerts, including the band’s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bonus live tracks recorded at various shows around the same time. Additionally, the album’s original tracklist,...

Paul McCartney was John Lennon’s friend, songwriting partner, and, he explained, something like a priest. McCartney was one of the people who saw through Lennon’s guarded nature and had many honest, vulnerable conversations with him. McCartney recalled one conversation with Lennon that left him feeling like a priest.
Paul McCartney shared what the relationship between himself and John Lennon was like
McCartney recognized that Lennon’s aggression was a way to protect himself. He responded to challenging situations and emotions with barbed humor.
“There would often be a very witty put-down,” McCartney said on the iHeartPodcast McCartney: A Life in Lyrics (via NME). “It wouldn’t always be a put-down but it was always a very quick answer, and he’d trained himself to do that. That was one of the attractive things about him.”

Nirvana’s third and final album, In Utero, celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. To mark the occasion, surviving band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, along with In Utero producer Steve Albini, sat down with Conan O’Brien for an hour-long conversation on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast.
The trio spoke at length about the In Utero recording process and comparisons to Nevermind; how they killed time in the studio by prank calling Gene Simmons, Evan Dando, and Eddie Vedder; the record label’s reaction to In Utero; and the depths of Kurt Cobain’s lyricism. For Nirvana geeks, the conversation won’t provide much in the way of new revelations, but it’s still a thrill hearing the three guys back in the same room together.

Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic are set to appear on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast next week in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band’s final album, In Utero. Update: Listen to the full episode here. In an advance clip premiered at Billboard, Grohl and Novoselic (along with In Utero producer/engineer Steve Albini) chatted with O’Brien about the band’s dizzying rise following the release of their second studio album, Nevermind, in 1991.
O’Brien began the conversation by recalling how there was just a three-day window between the September 1993 release of In Utero and the debut of his show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “I remembered the music on the album — because I was such a huge fan — being background music to the terror and the weirdness of me starting a late night show from complete obscurity in 1993,” he said.

Ed Sheeran found out the hard way that he can’t hang with Snoop Dogg — by smoking way too much weed, of course. During a recent appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, the singer revealed that a smoke sesh with the rapper led to Sheeran getting so high he couldn’t see.
Sheeran recalled attending a Snoop Dogg show in Melbourne with his wife and mother-in-law. After meeting the family — and greeting Sheeran’s mother-in-law with a cheery “What’s up, queen?” — Snoop took Sheeran back stage, where he and his entourage began smoking “blunt for blunt for blunt for blunt.”
Despite not normally smoking himself, the singer recalled thinking he’d have to partake in the practice just to say he smoked with Snoop Dogg. “I have a bit and I’m like, ‘I don’t feel too bad, this is good,'” Sheeran said. “Then I have a bit more,...

The 32-year-old “Shape of You” hitmaker revealed that he hung out with the 51-year-old “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rap icon in Melbourne, Australia recently. While in Snoop‘s dressing room, Ed wound up going “blunt for blunt for blunt for blunt” with him.

Ed Sheeran once succumbed to the most understandable peer pressure scenario of all time: Getting dangerously high with Snoop Dogg.

Ed Sheeran is a lightweight when it comes to marijuana, which he related in a new interview with the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast when he revealed he once got high with Snoop Dogg after a concert — very high.

A fresh-faced comedian walks through New York after having woken up and feeding his fish. He's got a nearly beatific smile on his face as he's wished good luck and almost instantly told by those same people (with sarcastic tones) that there's no pressure, because he's been chosen to replace one of the most beloved comedians to ever grace the small screen. He's tall, lanky, with a shock of red hair, and he's just barely reached the age of 30. Everyone from John Tesh to Tom Brokaw to passers-by give him some version of these remarks ("Ya better be as good as Letterman!"), and he takes them all in good stride. He walks into 30 Rockefeller Center, gets ready for his first TV hosting gig, taking over the "Late Night" show on NBC at 12:35 am. He walks into his dressing room, where he proceeds to attempt hanging himself. It's only when...

Making a “Star Wars” movie isn’t child’s play.

“The first time we actually had to use the lightsaber to start a little fight… We both automatically [made the noises],” Neeson said. “George said, ‘Let’s cut there. Boys, we can add that in later.’”
Others have also had trouble on “Star Wars” sets with refraining from doing their own sound effects.
In the commentary track on the home video release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, director Rian Johnson said that actress Laura Dern would make “pew” noises when firing her blaster.

Liam Neeson appeared on a recent episode of the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast (recorded prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike) and again shaded the “Star Wars” franchise for diluting itself with so many sequels and spinoffs. The actor, who played the Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” (1999), was asked about how often “Star Wars” fans come up to him to ask for an autograph.
“Not all the time,” Neeson answered. “I mean it is a cult. There’s so many movies and spin-offs now I think it’s diluting the whole thing. That’s my personal thing. Occasionally there’s kids after a ‘Star Wars’ autograph and I don’t want to give autographs at the airport. Oh but it’s not the kid, it’s the grandfather, there he is – or the dad. For many years, Star Wars fans just had A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi to fuel their love of the franchise. Then came The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith; six movies over a nearly thirty-year span. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, they naturally launched a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, but they also expanded the franchise with spin-off movies and a handful of TV series. That’s an awful lot of Star Wars in just eight years, and Liam Neeson thinks that all those projects are actively diluting the franchise.
Liam Neeson appeared on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast and was asked if he still gets approached for autographs by Star Wars fans. “Not all the time,” he said, “I mean it is a cult. There’s so many movies and spin-offs now I think it’s diluting the whole thing,...

A July 2000 clip from “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” has gone viral on social media for featuring the eponymous late night host making a joke to Harrison Ford about the actor playing Indiana Jones when he’s 80 years old. That panned out to be somewhat true in the recently-released “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which opened in theaters just a few weeks before Ford turns 81.
“People will never get tired of that genre,” O’Brien told Ford at the time. “When you’re 80 you could just do ones where they bring the treasures to you.”
Ford burst into laughter, with O’Brien adding that an “Indiana Jones” movie starring an 80-year-old Harrison Ford could be titled, “Indiana Jones and the Comfortable Bed.”

There was no mention of artificial intelligence Thursday at Tribeca Festival’s Paul McCartney talk with Conan O’Brien.

Season 4 of “Barry” has been a massive success, with critics raving over the shocking time jump and Bill Hader’s continued flexing of his directorial muscles. But if Larry David had gotten his way, the fourth and final season might have never happened.
In a new appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Hader recalled a recent encounter with his former “Curb Your Enthusiasm” collaborator. As Hader tells it, David thought that the Season 3 finale — which sees Barry Berkman arrested as part of a sting operation — was the end of the show.
“‘That’s it, right?’” Hader recalled David telling him after the end of Season 3. “I said, ‘No, we have a whole new season. And he went, ‘Why?’ I go, ‘Well, I think there’s more story to tell.’ And he’s like, ‘But it’s done.’”
While David’s proposed ending spot would likely have disappointed a lot of “Barry” fans,...

Two private security guards on the set of NBC’s Chicago Fire were injured Thursday when youths broke through a barrier and drove a four-wheeler onto the drama’s Chicago set.
The incident occurred in the city’s South Loop near the downtown Fire Academy. The guards, whose names were not released, were ultimately struck by the four-wheeler. A source told Deadline that the heroic efforts by the guards prevented the Atv from reaching the cast and crew.
The youths managed to flee the scene. The guards — retired members of the Chicago Police Department — were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
The incident immediately drew chatter on Twitter on the second to last day of filming for the NBC series. The plan is to wrap Friday.
Good evening everyone: unfortunately there was another serious safety issue on a set today. Details will likely come out soon but there was at least...
